Hello!

As it's now February, that makes this a genuinely good time to start work on the February Patroncast. Yeah. That's right. We're doing this. The naming protocol has shifted to actually make sense.

Just in case you're new, the Patroncast submission thread is where you get to ask questions, suggest topics, or argue about whether the new or old monthly naming protocol is better.

So ask away, and I'll update this post when the Patroncast is recorded, so as long as there isn't an edit below saying that, everything should be good :)

EDIT - sorry folks, but the Patroncast has now been recorded, so further questions cannot be included.

All the best,

Jon

It was my birthday in January, any chance I could get a happy birthday from cockney Jon?

Hey Jon! A couple of questions. First, is about the vote, particularly the stragety game, in particular I know a few people including myself were upset that 4 paradox games were chosen, over half the poll, and were wondering if you couldn't have included some other offering, such as maybe another total war (Paricularly shogun 2). The other question is a follow up the a question I asked a couple of months about asking how you would fix the insitute, which I loved the answer! Making it about restoring the old world is a cool idea! This lead me down thinking how the other factions would fit, I came up with the some ideas actually and was curious about your thoughts. We have dealt with in the past about villains who wish to restore the old world, fallout 3s villain in particular was about that, we usually focus on the impossibility of it, and the harm to real people if you were to try it, but what if instead the focus was on how you know BAD the old world was? Like even ignoring the nuclear war we have proof everywhere, experiments! Awful corporate powers and so much more, all in terminals across the wasteland, or in brotherhood hands! What if the brotherhood isn't just here because of dangerous technology, but a true ideological difference, the insitute wants to remake the world exactly as it was, warts and all, while the brotherhood actively despises the old world, and hates the idealation of it. You already explained how the insitute fits hear and I think it is easy to see how the brother could fit, they fought the enclave, and they surely have records about all the awful shit the old world was about and want to move away from it, and make a new future, meanwhile the miniute men can still be mostly the same, but add that maybe the brotherhood is tightfisted with it's tech, only slowly introducing tech to new places, as they worry the harm it could do in the wrong hands and are very organised about what to do with old tech, while the miniute men represent that most people use old tech to help them survive, and while yes the brotherhood might eventually give them their or even better tech as a replacment, they might be dead when it happens. The biggest problem I am having is how to fit the railroad into this equation, as synths now seem less the big central thing? Was wondering if you had any ideas to fix that?

Ideologically, I suppose the Railroad can be seen as representing naïve idealism - they want to embrace the technology of the new world, AND the ideals of the old world, to create a utopia where everybody just gets along, with their central conflict being that vast amounts of humanity is deeply trustful of synths - the irony that they run straight into the old world problem of prejudice. There are hints of this in Fallout 4 already, but it gets a bit buried by how the Railroad are on the defensive against those who would destroy them, but maybe the Railroad would be more interesting if they were allowed to be a broadly secret faction dealing with their own ideological issues, like the Brotherhood in New Vegas.

Thank you so much for the reply! And yeah I can see that, like maybe go for a full freedom of technology and infomation sort of approach? Both the insitute and brotherhood hid their tech, hmmm I think part of the problem is there are 2 hidden factions, the insitute and the railroad, but I think that can be handled
