November 27, 2017 - (One day after #94, 23 weeks into Susan's pregnancy)

Susan was in a bad mood. It had been close to a month since her last doctor’s visit. Ill fated as it was and she was still slightly pissed about it. But her mom had in an unusual move for her, confronted Susan directly and demanded that she go for a checkup. So here they were, once again in the waiting room of their local doctor’s office, where her mother worked. Once or twice Susan saw her walking back and forth in the small office behind the reception desk and calling out names as she took patients, giving Susan a reassuring smile every time they met eyes.

“Susan Bronwyn?” Called out a voice from the door.

Susan broke eye contact from her mom behind the glass of the reception desk and looked toward the door where a Nurse stood holding her clipboard. Nathan got up first and reached out a hand to help Susan who took it and got up herself, waddling toward the door and the two of them following her to the examination room. Once they were there, the nurse got all the basic measurements done straight away, as well as getting her blood pressure and oxygen levels. Leaving the two alone in the room once that was done.

“I think we’re getting better at this.” Nathan said looking up from the book he brought with him.

Susan stared at him flatly.

There was a soft knock at the door and a doctor Susan hadn’t seen before walked in. “Hello Susan.” She was a tall woman with her brown hair pulled back into a bun. She carried herself with confidence. “I’m Dr. Sophie Reese, and I’m the lead obstetrician here and I will be personally taking over your case from here on.” She smiled at Susan, taking a moment.

“I understand you’ve had difficulties with some of our junior physicians in the past. But that will not be an issue from here on, though we do have much to discuss regarding your pregnancy in particular.”

She walked over to Susan, putting down her clipboard on the bed next to Susan as she started to perform her own evaluation of Susan’s body. “I’ll be honest, you kind of threw us for a loop. While multiples are an increasing occurrence, we don’t often deal with higher order multiples. So our Junior Staff are less experienced with the signs and considerations involved.” She patted Susan’s shoulders and gently lifted up her shirt to listen to her heartbeat. “Septuplets no less,” she chuckled as Susan blushed.

She picked up her board again and wrote some things down, taking a seat on a small rolling stool which she scooted up to the bed. “Okay then. First off, I’m going to need you come in on a weekly basis for regular checkups.” She said.

Susan’s eyes widened at that. “Is there something wrong with the kids?”

“Oh! No, nothing is wrong dear. It’s just that... your case is rather special. Usually when dealing with higher order multiples we’re dealing with triplets to quintuplets. And even then it’s almost exclusively with women who’ve previously had children. Having septuplets as a first pregnancy is highly unusual. And warrants extra observation, should any complications arise.”

Susan felt her stomach turn. Her hand instinctively going to her belly, sticking out beneath her large breasts.

Dr. Reese noticed her tension and raised her hands. “Don’t worry. If anything I suspect that you have a much higher natural fertility than most women.” She indicated towards Susan’s large breasts which slightly overflowed her dark blue top. “We’ve been seeing an increase in these traits over the past decade or so, though few as exceptional as this. Among the outliers like yourself, a few have encountered some difficulty with mobility and encumberment, though for all of them their overall health indicated well. Because of the nature of your pregnancy, age, and intensity it is of our utmost priority that we see you through this with as minimal discomfort as possible.”

Susan looked over to Nathan who was busy writing in a small notebook he had brought with him, biting her lip. “This is all just so much.” She felt a mixture of frustration and nerves settle in her stomach.

The doctor set her pad down on her lap and took Susan’s hands. “Look, the important part of all this is that we’re here for you and the kids. We want you to have a healthy pregnancy, and for that we need to be able to know how it’s progressing. These checkups aren’t a scary thing, they’re a boring repetitive thing that ensures everything goes smoothly.” She grasped Susan’s hands tighter slightly in a reassuring way.

“Now according to my chart at least, nothing is of note. Is there anything out of the ordinary that you would like to bring up that you’ve noticed? Any odd urges or unexpected changes in your body?” She asked.

Susan blushed. “Well... I’ve started to lactate a lot.”

The doctors raised her eyebrows picking back up her clipboard an pen. “That is good to know. You’re at 23 weeks so it’s definitely quite early to start lactating. I’m sure it came as quite a shock.”

Susan blushed harder, rubbing her feet together. “Actually... I’ve been lactating for a long time now.” she bit her lip. “It’s just that the amount has increased... a lot... recently.”

The doctor considered this. “This is certainly something we will want to monitor, but isn’t something that is of major concern. If you would do me the favor of keeping track of how much you lactate, that would be helpful to determine how your body adapts and prepares for rearing the children.” She said smiling.

“Right...” Susan looked over to Nathan, who was now staring at here knowingly. “We-... I’ll be sure to do that.”

“Okay then. Thank you for your time and patience Susan, I look forward to seeing you again next week okay?“ She said standing from her stool and dragging it over to the corner.

“Okay.” Susan said.

The doctor waved cheerily as she left the two in peace.

“She’s nice.” Nathan said.

Susan still felt her stomach in a knot, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as it had been. “Yeah.”
