First of all, just wanted to say I’ve been watching your reactions for a while now and just realized you have a Patreon, so glad to be here to support. Also, regarding Rebecca’s accent, Oda takes inspiration from real life for a lot of his arcs, and European culture seems to be the primary source. The canals of Water 7 and the Yagara’s they used to navigate them, for example, are a 1:1 of Venice, Italy, and the gondolas and boats people use to get around. Dressrossa is perhaps the biggest influence we’ve seen yet. It’s supposed to be Spain. The name literally means ‘red dress’ in Spanish, the impassioned women and lovers are typical Spanish stereotypes, they show paella when they first get there, a classic Spanish dish, Violet’s flamenco dancing and the Spanish classical guitar which accompany it are Spanish arts, and Don Quixote is originally a character from a book about a Spanish man who wants to be a hero. This explains Rebecca’s Spanish accent as well. There are several European influences in general for this arc otherwise however, the squid ink pasta Sanji makes Violet is a classic Italian dish, the colosseum is supposed to be the Roman colosseum, and the general thematic elements involved with the whole ‘living toys’ dynamic is lifted straight out of Pinocchio, a German fairy tale. There are lots of fantasy/fairy tale references throughout one piece in general, for example the Tontatta’s restraint of Usopp and his subsequent deceit and lies to escape are story beats straight out of Gulliver’s Travels, when he encounters the Liliputians. This is something Oda does constantly, and will continue to pervade the worldbuilding and characters in future arcs, so try to keep an eye out for any real world influences you can find. Sorry for the wall of text, not sure if this has been said before, but didn’t see it anywhere so felt it beared mentioning. Great reactions as always, looking forward to the rest of the arc as well
