Hello Worms (and Beetles)!

Please find enclosed the first 90 minutes (roughly the first half I hope) of ‘Untitled Plagiarism Video’ (name still pending).

I’m trying something new with the patron version of this video:

Normally I do a ‘pacing pass’ towards the end, where I realise last-minute some segments would be better off removed, so the main ideas flow better, and the video justifies its runtime without (too many) pointless tangents. I usually set them aside to go into some kind of bonus video later, or they get saved for a future video which explores whatever ideas I cut out ‘properly.’ There’s a quarter of an “In Defense of Invisible War” video hiding at the back of the Human Revolution video's Premiere timeline staring at me with sinister intent.

But, this time, instead of cutting them right away, we’ve decided to leave them in, as an “extended edition” for patrons. I’ve put a red square in the top right corner when those sections are playing so you know what I’m thinking of cutting. That way you know when you’re seeing something that probably won’t be in the final video (and if you feel like something should stay / something else is a good idea to cut too, let us know in the comments!)

- Harry

PS: For unknown reasons (Adobe Premiere is bad cough cough) about ten minutes of the previous version of this video was blank video with no audio. This is fixed! If you saw that version my apologies and thanks for your patience. Let me know if there's other oddities!

I didn't know anything about the iilluminaughtii drama until watching this video. I used to watch her all the time in high school and I never even thought about the Idea of checking her sources. thanks to this video Im going to be careful about whom I watch. also HI! Hbomber you are my first Patreon subscribed creator.

Anonymous

Wish I had more critique to add, all I can say is I love what I've seen so far and I'm very excited for the final vid!!

Anonymous

Hold on I need to draw you swinging a baseball bat at a beehive, then I can give more insightful input. (REALLY Good stuff so far!)

Anonymous

never thought I'd see him beef with other y******rs again

Anonymous

I'm echoing others, but the Illuminaughti section could be trimmed down. Specifically the Fyre Festival bit. It has some good jokes, but at some point it starts to feel less like a video solely about plagiarism and more like a personal vendetta. That said, the LukiePoo apology gag was *chefs kiss*.

I would say that the marked-for-cutting section on Miucin's history should stay; I think it provides essential context for the guy and his "work". The to-be-cut section on Iiluminaughtii should probably go, and the final stretch of excerpting from her videos goes on WAY too long; it was excruciating by the end.

Anonymous

Whoops, accidentally hit enter too soon. I wanted to say that my most urgent piece of advice is definitely don't keep the line about how fucked up it is that she maybe shared a suicide note. It feels off-topic and like it's just there to make her look worse. Also, I know nothing about about drama, but if it ends up that she did nothing wrong (wrt that issue specifically) you won't feel good to have contributed to misinformation, even in a super mild way. I did really like how you said "good luck with the other 4(? or so" things while addressing her directly, that was funny without crossing any lines. In my opinion at least.

Is the Good Doctor Foundation associated with the show The Good Doctor?

Count Crackula

I don't know. The Illuminaughtii part just goes on and on. I got the point of the bit within the first 10 minutes: she's a lazy hack and is a good example of the garbage content mill. But the it just goes on and on. It's also grating because I don't think most people watching will know who that is and why the video is devoting so much time to some otherwise forgettable internet personality. The entire segment feels like it's beating a dead horse. But perhaps that's clever the joke of the segment? Like, going back and forth over and over ad nauseam as a sardonic way to illustrate how much effort and research should be done in the name of serious subject matter and documentarian-style video essays? Mean all the best! You are a busy boy my goodness.

I do perfectly understand the urge to do an hour long rant about illuminaughty, we all do, but I think it would help the pacing of the video to keep it short and sweet here. Id say establish the plagiarism of brian deer, jump straight to an abridged version of the fyre fest stuff (you only need 3 blatant examples tops) then move onto the Legal eagle stuff, her response and her abuse of a suicidal employee. Ahh sorry, how did that get on there, hmm guess thinking about illuminaughty got me a bit riled up...

Anonymous

the cornucopia of evidence of plagiarism stops becoming a feast of comedy and instead becomes an avalanche of evidence so encumbering that it completely eclipses the memory of filip in the same video and instead becomes an illuminaughty video.

Anonymous

Please don't cut the Shapiro joke. It's too good, the world needs to hear it.

Anonymous

going to go with the seeming-consensus and also what i said on the youtube video and say that the illuminaughti section goes on for way too long and takes unnecessary shots at her, when the video is supposed to be about plagiarism and it's toxic effects on content creation as a whole very much looking to see how the rest of the video goes; seems like it can go in a lot of very interesting directions and the mention of AI from some seems very promising

Anonymous

Glad I'm not the only one who thought it was waaayyy too much. Like, I think it's an interesting topic to discuss, but there's a lot of redundancy in this long a discussion on it.

Anonymous

If you do decide to cut the iilluminaughtii bit (I think it runs too long/repetitive but I don't think it necessarily takes potshots when the point is that she's been doing low-effort monetizable content for a long time in different genres), there are some other "video essayists" recently being caught out for similar behavior you could also point to -- first one top of mind is James Somerton, recently caught copying text wholesale from books and blocking anybody who points it out. I think you've got a good point when you say that video essays are getting content-milled these days, but to really drive it home it might take pointing out other people who do it.

Anonymous

while i do think the illuminaughti section goes on a while, i dont think the 'shots taken' are unnecessary even in the slightest. She's been making tons of money doing low effort copy paste video essays, she and anyone else like her deserves to be made fun of lol.

Anonymous

Echoing what the comments say, needs some trimming on the illuminaughty stuff but other than that, hilarious and informative as always!

Anonymous

This is great so far! Too lazy to read the other comments (as is the theme of the video) to see if anyone else suggested it, but some of the Illuminaughty comparison clips are a bit too long. After like 30 seconds, I'm just thinking "I get it, she copied it. I don't really want to hear what she copied for this long."

Hbomb

Thanks! I'm making a lot of cuts to this section, so hopefully it flows much better

All-Natural Fig Jam

I'm a bit late to the party here but would just like to add to the chorus of comments here and on YouTube saying don't cut the Silent Hill stuff! It has more footage of you speaking and giving your opinion than the MMR section, which makes it feel more personal and less like you're just providing a litany of clips for evidence.

Anonymous

I'll go out on a limb and disagree with the people saying you should trim a lot of the illuminaughtii stuff. I thinks it's important to go beyond just showing a couple legit examples, and show the true scale of her theft. People are saying "I get it, you can move on," but the point isn't to convince you. It's to show that practically every second of "content" she produces is stolen. One or two solid examples is too easy to dismiss as an aberration and wiggle out of. If you go through an entire video and show all of her lines side by side, you get a clearer picture of what she's actually doing than you would if you just said "you know those examples I showed? The whole video is like that."

Anonymous

I remember me and my partner finding Illuminaughtii's videos and liking them as a sort of summary and overview of something interesting. I also remember us talking about how the heck she can make so many videos in such a short space of time - oh how naive we were! Blair's history of different content mills was definitely interesting, and gives good context for the current incarnation of her channel. I also thought it was funny you took aim at drama channels when we all know as soon as this video hits YouTube it will be mined for every grain of "drama".

Anonymous

I'm very late to this conversation, but I really like the part in the beginning where you reach into your ruined sleeve as a pocket. Please keep that part in the video to please ME in particular. It's quite important.

Anonymous

Amazing job, thank you so much for sharing! I had not been familiar with Illuminaughti before, but I keep seeing her videos as recommended all the time. Looking at the examples you added, it genuinely would be hard to tell these are long strings of quotes.

Anonymous

Wow, that disclaimer that you might ruin a youtuber I like would have been very relevant two months ago. Thankfully, I got tired of her videos just ending without payoff and moved on to other video essay tubers.

Anonymous

can't wait to see the next two hours of this!

Nyx, the Deity of the Night

I'm just gonna jot down my thoughts while I watch the video, do with it what you will :) The part at 11:47 feels a little repetitive, seeing as you mentioned that "people who are caught plagiarising, probably have done it and gotten away with it before" earlier in the video while discussing Filip Filip's "apology" video's remind me of the formula/checklist that I believe Pyrocynical made when Logan Paul apologised for the Forest Incident, and quoted after with other YouTuber apologies Another story about plagiarism is Morgz stealing MrBeast's ideas and thumbnails, but this might be too niche. What about the "Great artists steal" defense?

Anonymous

Enjoyed this, but I think you could cut out a lot of the Illuninaughtii stuff and make the point just as effectively. I feel like you give so many examples of her doing the exact same thing (particularly in the Brian Deere section) that started to feel repetitive. I appreciate that you need to show this isn't an isolated issue and is literally her entire videos, but it really affected the pacing for me. Looking forward to the rest of it! Keep doing what you do. ❤️

orestes

Is there a way to keep most of the clips from the Illuminaughtii section, but make them shorter without losing the point? I agree that the pacing gets a bit bogged down in that section, but also think that the volume of examples is important to the point you're making.

Anonymous

So ngl, I always thought there was something off about Illuminaughtiis videos, the quality always seemed inconsistent at the best of times, and most of them seem to end really suddenly, and really unsatisfyingly. And I always just assumed this was because she rushed to write them to stick to her quota of 3 videos a week. But now that I know she doesn't even write any of her videos, I have to question whether or not she even knows how to end a video in a satisfying way or if she has to "quote" that too.

Anonymous

I definitely think the Silent Hill stuff is really good! (the whole video is of course but seeing as how that is marked to be cut)

E. Filleul

I saw a tweet earlier this week in which you said you had made a discovery on a currently being produced video... is it at all related to this topic or... the next one ?

EvilElitest

i'm getting an error has occursed messaged is that just me?

Anonymous

I'd rather see the 58-62 min "To cut" part to stay in, and instead shorten down the MMR part(mostly the the second half). This "to cut" segment shows other angles of their channel that feels crooked, while the MMR part gets a little long winded. Also the 62-63 min joke would not hit as well without the previous "to cut" segment.

Motorsheep

The more I have learned about this person, the more her addled attack on Legal Eagle makes perfect sense: It wasn't simply that she had no concept of sharing ideas, but far more probable that she felt she was being "exposed" somehow by the editor of a legal YT channel asking (innocently) pointed questions about her work and causing her to panic. She wasn't really afraid someone was trying to steal "her" editing and effects methods, it's that she thought she had been caught with effects she had stolen from someone else, and was deflecting by trying to stick the "plagiarist" label on the ones who "caught" her. After all, there is no way she did even that small bit of graphical embellishment by herself. But that's just a theory... a SHAME theory...

Anonymous

47:17 I hate how you use term "commie" for creators who properly quote their sources. What communist do best is steal credit for work they didn't do for shit

Anonymous

Finally got the chance to watch… we very much enjoyed the video and generally felt it was well composed. Tried to keep track of the “to cut” items but found the one thing that I’d personally cut back on if I was making it would be the different clips from Blair’s videos toward the end of these 90 minutes to show the scope of her plagiarism and how you can basically “set it and forget it” (like what she does!). That was the one place where the pacing felt off and slowed down in a way that disrupted my sense making a bit and took me out of the video. The little funny bits are on point— my spouse and was doing his high pitched cackles at these points (a good sign for humor) and wants me to shout out the “yeehaw” face stretch and “strap in or strap on happy pride month.”

Anonymous

Oh and also— are you going to discuss how AI impacts this process and entire channels are just AI copies of YouTubers doing review content? This seems to be coming up recently. It’s reminiscent of the Filip segment but with more AI.

Anonymous

What are the plugins Filip uses?

How DARE you slander chicken nuggets! You monster!

Hey HBomb, love the video. Are you familiar with Jacksfilms and what he has been doing? It isn't 1:1 to your video topic, but he has been on a campaign against YouTubers who "curate" (steal) other people's tiktoks, reddits, instas, etc and "react" (make basic cookie cutter comments) without any type of credit or anything. He has called out several creators, most notably Sssniperwolf among others, pointing out how is its non transformative and stealing, rather than "fair use". He has interviewed individuals who have had their work stolen and have helped get their works claimed and protected. It's probably too late to do anything with him but it'd be great to have his work give some influence on your subject.

It's very funny watching this and then getting to the Fyre bit cause I've just recently watched the Fyre documentary again that was made and (I'm intentionally writing this comment before I see the inevitable reveal) but the images of the people were ones I distinctly remember from that documentary. Like it actually helps illustrate the point for me more that in the ones I wasn't as aware on, I missed it, but since I know that documentary well it's so damn obvious that it's from this documentary. To the point where I feel confident calling it out beforehand!

Anonymous

Ive been waiting for a new video and I loved every minute of this, for what its worth I think you should keep it all, I love your long form content and I thought all of the material you have so far was entertaining, funny as hell but most importantly informative. I want this video to be as long as possible by the time you finish it, as you said these videos take a long time to make so I'd love to be get as long of a video essay as you are able to give us. Plus I think we need more awareness on this topic in general, I see some creators shedding light on this issue but I see a lot of people either just name-calling creators that steal content (which I feel can weaken a persons argument at times) or simply repeating a story that 4-5 other creators commented on. I love how deep you go down the rabbit hole to get your facts straight and present us with fresh and informed takes to make your case. Great video so far!

Anonymous

To weigh in on the length of the iilluminaughtii stuff, towards the end of it (during the fyre festival stuff) I was getting to a point of thinking you should cut some of it and move on to the next bit more quickly. Part of that was even halfway through I was getting sick of the sound of her voice. Not really because of anything about her voice or how she spoke, but because your point had been made so thoroughly that her wrongs had made her voice disgusting to me. But then suddenly once it was done and you went on to the ads and sponsorship stuff it all felt completely justified. I'm honestly not sure I've had that sequence of emotions handed to me so pointedly before. As you kept going it all just feels more and more justified. There are definitely times when you're comparing her stuff to her sources where it drags and feels mean. But even with your own involvement in the drama, you ultimately manage to keep a calm distance to enunciate why this kind of thing is important and its ramifications for the sources being plagiarized. I love what you've got so far, and look forward to being able to see what kind of horrible shit you get to expose in the rest of the video.

Anonymous

the only part i felt like should be shortened was the moulin rouge bit, i got the joke but it kept going so long i kind of thought the clip would just keep going, then it ended. felt awkward. also, the fyre festival stuff has a lot of time spent for a pretty simple point, i don't think you necessarily need to cut it, but it's not really hard to tell with the side by side that she's just directly putting things in. also maybe talk figures on how much you've been offered? i know it might seem in bad taste, but the taboos around how much people get pay only hurt workers, and it's hard to get a true sense of scale from "a fuckton of money". our fucktons could be completely different, and unless it puts you in legal trouble to say what an average is here, i think it would be a worthy inclusion.

Crescent Minor

There's an entire video about transformation in that early-on bit you're thinking of cutting. I've been saying something like that for a while, since I was a little kid: we have a different idea of idea theft now, maybe an equally valid possible way of thinking about it, because we've seen levels of artistic reinterpretation with editing being explored by the masses. The tools to do that weren't widely available for a lot more people to play with until recent decades. I hope that the reason you mean to cut it is to avoid the distraction of the wider topic and expand on it later, rather than not to talk about it altogether. I'm worried a lot of people won't get that good joke about having to do more work in Filip's section for having less material still available, then getting to kind of coast a bit through Blair's sections for her vast available crap. Maybe they'll have to wait for their third viewing.

What's Therapy

ah man Hbomb's videos are so great and make me so happy

Anonymous

Honestly, all of the "to cut" stuff in the iiluminatii section needs to stay, and like half of the parts where its just long chains of examples of her plagiarism need to go. There's more than enough evidence to make the point compelling and these sections feel pretty sluggish. It feels that proving a point for personal reasons was the driver behind those sections of the video, which is entirely understandable, but they really kill the flow and long unbroken strings of the same quotes being said twice quickly stop having the same weight as the first few examples. Other than that, another incredibly well made and interesting video, can't wait to see the whole thing.

Anonymous

i miss myst this just feels bad man

Anonymous

Not sure if you're already looking into this but there's a massive issue in games journalism with people ripping off guides. The problem is there's no copyright in facts so as long as the guys stealing the content file the numbers off just enough, even though it's clearly been nicked there is no legal recourse. Also the reason a publication would remove all work from a plagerist, especially when reviews are involved is that it opens them up to getting sued for defamation, because the main legal defence that stops pubs getting sued for a bad review is that it was the writers honestly held opinion. And if you jacked the review. You lose that vital legal defence.

literally eating popcorn while I watch this. I saw the initial exchange on twitter and have somewhat followed some of the discourse that followed. I did not realise that the it went this deep and am sadly both shocked and not surprised. I had even seen the response video and remember thinking well that sounds reasonable, followed by wait she didnt even address that actual claim that Hbomb made.

cacao

Just wanted to echo that I feel like seeing iiluminaughtii say the same thing as Brian Deer for ten minutes did go on far far far too long - I think it could work better after the first couple of quotes as a very quick montage, or even a separate bonus video for pacing reasons

Dylan Roy

When you mentioned the fanart of iilluminaughtii bro-fisting the friend she had recently issued a C&D to, I felt compelled to mention that it's actually gotten way worse since then, and she's gone as far as FORECLOSING ON HIS HOUSE.

Anonymous

lots of folk are talking about cutting down on iiluminaughtii's copying of Brian Deer, and while i agree, the examples are just too shocking and funny. maybe upload the rest to twitter, or here, as a patreon extra? :)

Unfortunately I think iiluminaughtii is moving faster than hbomb can ever edit for

I'm assuming this one is on its way soon, very excite (I've already watched this one twice)
