One of my all-time favorite films. SO many classic lines and scenes. Another fantastic director to check out - Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood, The Master, and Phantom Thread would be my recommendations)

To recommend another good director. Denis Villeneuve. Arrival is my favorite, but his sequel to Blade Runner (Blade Runner 2049) is REALLY good, and Prisoners is another really good one of his. Edit: Also Alfonso Cuaron. He directed “Gravity” and “Children of Men”. The former is a really well done space (not sci-fi) thriller. Think “Apollo 13” meets “Castaway”. And the latter is a post (or present) apocalyptic story about infertility being our demise. Both movies are beautifully shot, with amazing acting, fantastic scores, and just superb storytelling.

If you want another one just like Goodfellas, Scorsese's "Casino" is another true story (with fictional names, more stylization and a few liberties taken with the real story). For other directors, Cohen Brother's "No Country For Old Men" is a unique suspense/thriller that is done in a way I personally have never seen before, it's hard to explain. They also have an equally untraditional comedy called "The Big Lebowski" with a peculiar sense of humor. Paul Thomas Anderson movies can be abstract but there is something so palpable and grounded about them like watching a play, and the performances he's able to bring out of actors are something else ("There Will Be Blood", "Magnolia", "The Master"), can't go wrong with him IF you like his style. A few behind the scenes things I learned about Goodfellas that sort of explained how it felt so authentic was that the woman who played Tommy's mother is actually Scorsese's mother. Idk if you noticed the collars of the suits but she personally ironed them the way it was custom to do amongst those guys (Scorsese grew up in a NY Italian neighborhood). Also the agent talking to Henry and Karen about Witness Protection at the end was the real handler for Henry Hill.

Recommending Joel and Ethan Coen as good directors with an excellent filmography. They make comedies and dramas. If you want some of their lighter comedies, I would recommend Raising Arizona or The Big Lebowski. Raising Arizona is a goofy, fun ride; Lebowski is too, but with a lot of iconic wtf moments in it. Director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) has called Raising Arizona his favorite film of all time with, according to him, the best opening sequence to a movie ever.

The people in this movie were even scarier in real life.
