Great reaction as always. You experienced the same thing that most of us did when watching the first time. You articulated the summary correctly: The answer was in front of us the whole time, and Nolan fairly dropped enough hints along the way. It’s a remarkable piece of story telling, and I hope this might encourage you to research Nicola Tesla a bit, as I am sure you will find the subject of his persona and work equally as fascinating. As to some of your questions, Olivia certainly didn’t know that a pair of twins made up the complete Borden. Sarah knew there was an inherent duplicity, but she didn’t know Fallon was Borden/Borden was Fallon either. She just knew that the totality of Borden was something she suffered and ultimately could not live with anymore. I am glad you enjoyed it, as we certainly enjoyed viewing your brain scrambling. ;-)

Great reaction! such a good movie, great acting. Tesla was played by David Bowie!

Mister Lou

Great reaction. it's funny I watched this yesterday for the first time in a long time with ItsAPrimate and after that, I was thinking how much I wanted to watch this movie again and a day later, you upload your reaction! great timing

if you liked this you need to watch The Illusionist. Both came out around the same time, but I think The Illusionist is slightly better

Ron

Great reaction! It's been years since I've seen this film, I definitely picked up details that I missed early on. I think its interesting that Angier had a working matter duplicator that could duplicate a living being (including humans). It could have been used for so many other things in the world. A machine like that could basically usher in the post-scarcity society (duplication of living beings notwithstanding). The box is basically a mixture of a Star Trek transporter and replicator with the advantages of the latter but with a lot of ethical baggage.

I haven’t seen this movie yet, but I’ve put it on my list for a future viewing once it’s available on one of the streaming service subscriptions I have. Since there doesn’t seem to be an official existing Cass Patreon thread where movie recommendations are made, here goes a small one... Considering Valentine’s Day 💘 is coming up soon, I’d like to know what love story movie recommendations people have that are hidden gems or forgotten classics. For my two cents, I recommend a small independent film called Once (2007).

I agree that on a second viewing there are so many clues for the audience to piece together along the way. All the same, I'm still not sure what Sara knew at the end. I also didn't catch why Borden used Tesla as the cipher for his made-up diary. Surely he did not guess that such a machine could be built? If he did, he wouldn't have been stumped by the final trick, and thus trapped... I guess I'm going to have to watch this movie a third or fourth time.

He used Tesla to send Angier on a long expensive trip to nowhere, and he was caused to pick Tesla because he DID commission a machine from Tesla to do his act BUT only for the showmanship. He knew he was poor at that and needed to improve his act, he went to the expo that Angier saw him at, and saw the wonder of Tesla's work. He didn't have any idea a machine could also be built to clone/teleport, he was just using the wonder of electricity.

I saw this back in 2006, and this was my second time watching. Yes, its Nolan, a great director. I enjoyed the performances, r.i.p. Mr. Bowie, but I wasn't too crazy about the story itself. I don't know why I'm thinking of From Hell, but like that movie, you want it to to be good, but to each his or her own. Eitherway, enjoyed your reaction, I may read the book.
