ah this is the CRAZY performance episode i’m ready!!

arianaisventi

Hi Jeff! Ok, first, please don't murder me in the comment section. Hahaha. But the GFRIEND dance group, yes it was a surprise visit from mentor but they should've expected it because it is usual in survival shows and the mentor wasn't angry because they weren't good. She was angry because the other groups are practicing hard while them, they went back to their dorms to take a nap. I know taking a break isn't a sin but they could've taken a break within the practice room and continue after and when the mentor asked to show her what they practiced, they only show they a minute or less. For the mentor, it looks like they are not determined enough or greedy to win. For the spin they did on the choreo, they didn't add or improvise it, it really is part of the original choreography. P.S. I'll keep editing this comment as I watch this. Hahaha.

Gotta love feeldog 🤧

Victoria

i hate how they never give girl groups harder choreos when they're more than capable of executing it! i hope that ends up changing because the older girl groups did more mature & sexy concepts.

Victoria

koreans seem to really enjoy aegyo, it's more of a culture thing. i don't mind it if it's not excessive haha

BaoziBang

So... It's like this. If you are a Trainee in a kpop company and you take a break while others are dancing, someone makes a surprise visit and you suck, they WILL fire you.

BaoziBang

Also, the Crazy Team wasn't bad but I actually stopped in the middle of their performance to watch the original instead which... Isn't a great sign.

BaoziBang

If anyone want some 4minute Goodness: https://youtu.be/3YGRNrR3jR8

BaoziBang

I also have to admit... I skipped most of the rest of the episode because it bored me the first Time, only listened to most of your commentary for the rest. I'm simply not a fan of sweet gg stuff. I'm a girl crush advocate.

h.

are you posting anything else today?

jeffavenue

lol no worries! no murdering necessary! from what I gathered though, they were only going to take a nap from 8:20pm and then be back at 9:00pm. I think the show just timed the surprise visit during that timeframe for show lol. I think even if they did take a nap in the dance practice and the surprise visit happened, they'd still be in trouble :(

Sheila Vaidyanathan

I completely agree with you about Yang Jiwon, she's obviously very talented but (and it's probably just the way the show was edited) she doesn't seem to work as hard as a lot of the other girls and yet she rides by on her popularity. Obviously popularity plays a big part in the rankings but at this point in the show the viewers still didn't have a whole lot to go off of for voting, after there's more performances the rankings better reflect the actual talents imo.

Victoria

i like both. i enjoy the girl crush concept but i also like seeing them switch it up and do cute stuff :)

I've not watched the entire show yet but I just couldn't wait until the end. I just finished watching you react to the dance battle and it made me remember how much it was cut. Ji Hansol did perform but it didn't make into the episode. Here is the link (https://www.vlive.tv/video/50986?channelCode=D814E3) . Same with A.C.E Jun performance, they didn't aired it in the show. Here is the link (https://www.vlive.tv/video/50984?channelCode=D814E3). Here is a masterpost on reddit with all the dance position battle from both the girl and boy (aired and unaired) if you want to check it out (https://www.reddit.com/r/KBSTheUnit/comments/7hz1as/the_unit_position_battles_dance/). You can check them on your free time. They were really good performance ! Well, I'll surely be edit/add more to this comment after I finish the episode :) Edit : I just finished the episode and now I'm sad since I have to wait for next week for the boy's performances ! I just can't wait. To be honest, when I first watched The Unit, I skipped most of the girl group's part but watching it with your reaction was fun. I don't particularly dislike girl groups, I just dislike how they are being promoted. Like you said, I believe most of the girl group aren't able to show their full dance potential because their are restrained to do cuter and brighter concept. It's a shame since I really love girl group doing darker or powerful concept where they can show their full potential just like Dreamcatcher's Scream and Moonbyul's Eclipse. It's also about breaking gender norm and not limiting oneself to stereotypes. I also 100 % agree with what you said about the fact that a sexy doesn't necessarily mean showing skin and that just having presence can be sexy but in many girl group the sexy concept often comes with oversexualized outfit which is not a problem in itself if the artist feel at ease wearing it but were I see a problem is that it is sometime pushed on the artist and I don't support that. Anyway, I hope girl group branches into more genre were they can show their full potential. Also, really enjoy the reaction. Your comments are always so interesting ! Well that was a long comment, I guess it fit with the lenght of this video...

Missy

Oh my god, there were moments that I want you to say it louder. I was like: "Yes! That's exactly what I think". I 100% agree on 3 things: 1. Red Flavor team did well, they were perfectly suitable to the concept and they delivered. It was such a pity that their votes are so low. 2. Yang Jiwon got a free ride on her popularity. She is talented of course, but somehow she didn't deliver in performance and came under my expectation. It is so frustrated to see the audience vote pooling into her, while she didn't stan out that much on stage tbh (vocal, dance and even presence). 3. The Give it to me team had better vocal and I like how they did the song justice vocally. Semmi and Yeoeun became my favourite after this performance because of their singing. Edit: if you have time, you can watch the full, still cam version to see the choreo

Anonymous

For Red Flavor I think there were probably originally too many formation changes in their choreography that's why the mentor said it was "too much" and they should simplify . It could be too distracting from the center singer and confuse the viewer.

Anonymous

There are some unaired videos. For rap battle and vocal battle as well. I like most of the song for girl group like 4minute, mamamoo, sistar, red velvet are really good idols and in my opinion, the heart attack song not really suitable for competition

Louie Gabiliño

The cultural reset that has been brought by GG’s GEE. LOL Jeff you should see the actual GEE MV or perf and then see all the boy group covers of this LOLLL.

K

Regarding the dance for GG, they can't really give them very hip hop or very hard choreo in general because they have to sing on stage, its hard to have the very hip hop ish dance moves while maintaining to be stable plus their health as well, example: Yeri, she's kinda weak that she had to be injected IV after performances. But there are GG out there who have also very hard choreo.

Anonymous

I really can't watch the units doing Gee and Red Flavor, it's just cringe all the way. I've seen both perf once during the episode premiere tho. Not just in The Unit but also on other survival shows. Like they don't really grasp the concept and overall vibe of the song. Both song are considered "cute concept" but they (survival show teams) over exaggerate the cuteness all the time.

S H

I also think that was the case because after the comments, the girls themselves said in the interviews that they tried to spice it up a lot and we can see from the snippets of the practice they had so many formation changes. That said the end result was a decent performance so they managed to find the balance between making the choreo suitable for 9 people, while not going over the top and being distracting.

S H

Many great comments from the fellow unit family here! I won't repeat what others have said, so here are some other points: the position battles: - as others mentioned they had vocal and rap position battles too but I guess trying to air them all would have been too long. I suppose dancing is always more exciting to watch so they went with dance. I don’t think these were freestyle at all. If they were, then Hojoon (MJ-inspired routine) wouldn’t have had that red arm band ready. Juhyun (dancing high girl) had also showed off that same routine in the previous episodes when they were asking her to dance to decide the center. Hahah do watch the boy’s rap battle; there was some fun dissing going on. - For the girls, Viva (3rd place), Juhyun (2nd place), and Mint (1st place) were the right ones for the top 3 imo tho most people in the KBS video comments on youtube, tend to feel like Juhyun was much better than Mint. I think they're both skilled, but very different styles. Jyhyun is so technically strong, clean and powerful with her dance, while Mint has a breakdancing background, hence the tricks (tricks are technical and difficult in their own right too). - the guys; I think the end ranking was about right as well. I just feel like Euijin is more technical and precise (because that's just how his style of popping is like), but Feeldog's performance was designed for a competition like this with a balance of tricks, hype music, a build-up and ending with a bang. The performances: - 1st perf: It’s not my kinda music so I didn’t really get into it but objectively speaking N.CA’s vocals were just so good. As for the drama with the mentoring, I agree they probably played it up for TV, though I like that the VJ was nice enough to go wake them up XD - 2nd perf: When I first watched this I liked the Crazy performance the most though I still liked 4-minute’s version better. This is a song that has swag and attitude, maybe what fell flat a bit for me was some of the members were still a bit more “pretty” than swag. Euna Kim was the best for me in this group - 3rd perf: Heart attack, for me the vocals where nowhere. Sounded like they were struggling to hit the notes and singing a whole song almost totally in falsetto is…nope. I hate to say this but I am not a fan of Yoon Joo’s leadership style. She started by belittling the leaders job as just getting the food, telling people when to start practice and stop etc. To me that is a show of not understanding leadership. This team had bad dynamics as well; nobody wanting to lead or manage and then just dumping the work on the eldest person (who coincidently was not really an effective leader). Well. The end result showed. The song is a song by brave brothers, who tends to produce songs for female groups in crazy high registers. This song was definitely a booby trap among all the songs available lol. - 4th perf: Red velvet song. Again not my type of music lol but I agreed the end performance was polished. I think the switch to split that signing part between the two girls turned out in the end. Blond girl (Yebin) has a nice clear voice that rings out nicely at that part. - 5th perf: I liked this as well when it first aired because the singing quality was high compared to the other performances. Though I agree with you some of the voices didn’t match the song well. The girlish voices don’t sound right for me here (like Joo and Jiwon, sorry). Mamamoo songs are full of sass and singing prettily doesn’t fit in so well…Agree with you as well I’m not sure why Jiwon continued to rank high in this episode other than she’s pretty, and also was hyped up a lot in the audition episodes before this. I think voters still had that fresh in their minds. - 6th perf: Give it to me…I loved the original song, so wasn’t impressed by this version at first tbh. The vocalists here were skilled but I couldn’t help comparing it to the original. I think sistar handled it with a lot more soul and more variation between belting and subtlety. I’m not a huge fan of belting so…my favourites here for the singing where Semmi and Hayoon (trot girl). Definitely felt bad for the rappers because while they changed some of the vocal parts into rap parts instead in the final song, it paled compared to the original song…I like Bomi, the Chinese girl who ranked last tho. She has a very low voice which isn’t so common in Kpop. - 7th Perf: Gee is a slightly older song out of the ones available and it was from a time when cutey concepts were big I guess. I felt some of the girls were a little too old to give off the right feel/charm. If you go back to the original song as well, towards the end there were some impressive high notes from Taeyeon which this team couldn’t execute well (the person singing it took a breath between etc). Oh burger kind keeps appearing because they were a sponsor. The winning groups would be BK spokespeople in case you wonder why BK kept appearing. With reality shows like these sometimes it’s also luck. If you have a situation where you’re dumped in a group with poor balance (heart attack no leaders, give it too me too many rappers), or a song/style that’s terrible for you, it’s just tough. I feel like the format favours versatile people. You’ll see these versatile people as the show goes on methinks.

I believe the vocal and rap battles are in a later episode though. Something like episode 7.

PositiveThinking

Agreed with most of your comments as usual, only going to comment other thoughts: The Red Flavor group: The double standard for boys and girls in kpop is so strong, but it stems from the general public/culture in Korea. So with that in mind, I think the choreographers comments were right. She wasn't telling them to tone it down excatly, but to focus on the feel of the song (refreshing) rather than impressive dancing. I gather they had tried to compensate for switching a 5 person choreo to 9, but making a lot of complicated formation changes. One of the main points of the song though is having catchy choreo that everyone was dancing to. The formation changes made it hard to appreciate that kind of simple fun aspect. About their final performance, your comments made me rethink my original opinion. When it first aired I didn't like it and fully understood why it got lower scores. Now I think that I and the audiance were judging relative to Red Velvet. See RV never do an all out cute concept. Their 'red' songs are cute with a twist or some edge to it. This cover didn't bring that edge or twist at all and just went for over the top cute, which felt wrong for those who like the original. But I see your point, as an all out cute concept, they did well. Another possible reason for the lower scores - They were scored individually and no one in that team had super impressive vocals or rapping + No super popular members from before, which sadly was a big factor as well. Just in general, I think people with the lowest scores are just people who didn't stand out. If you did perfectly fine, but weren't amazing, or didn't have great stage presence, you'd get a lower score than someone who made a mistake but gave a great smile after the mistake. In some ways, the mistake would actually be eye-catching even, so provided you didn't keep messing up for the rest of the stage, you could actually get an even better score than if you'd done perfectly.

S H

Ah now that you mention it, I think they did but definitely not such a long cut.

I invite u to watch the original song of the girl's part it's really good, especially for "Gee - girl generation" 👌😘

hayun lee

your comment about girl group choreo was weird because blackpink and aespa are literally known to have way easier choreo than groups like izone, twice, gfriend, loona, etc LMAO at the end of the day people percieve girl groups with "harder" and aggressive sounds to have more complicated choreo when its not really true. viewing femininity and girliness to be inferior and perpetuating a "good compared to other women" mindset is honestly sexist so that didnt sit right with me at all

pr37

I don't think he's trying to say that femininity and girliness is inferior. He's pointing out that while many of the women here have trained in dance for so long, once they debut they are often given choreos that do not showcase their skills. For example, Chungha is someone who has "feminine" choreo yet it really showcases how good of a dancer she is.

i think kpop isn't really all about the technicality or difficulty of choreo bcs its for korean public's entertainment in the first place. their main target audience enjoys fun and easy to follow choreographies that becomes trendy and sticks to their generation and even beyond. like t-ara's roly-poly or snsd's gee. so like i understand why even with hardcore training ggs or even some bgs aren't given hard choreos but some fun easy ones to suit the taste of their main market. also like btob, they're an idol group under cube entertainment (senior of pentagon) but got so popular bcs of an actor member and their ballad trilogy, they're more known as a vocal group, even when they went back to performing sexy choreography, the public don't judge them by the choreo or execution but enjoy the amazing live vocals and their great songs on the top of the charts 😂

Inoue

My main problem with Heart Attack was the fact that it is not song that is suitable for competition. AOA has sexy choreo and some of the girls were hella young for that which i think was the reason why the moves felt awkward bcs they overall toned it down. The sexiness and high pitches is what originally AOA was all about especially in the choruses.
