Did the right group go home??

PS. I had a long rant in the beginning lol. Reaction starts at 6 min mark.

I personally don't like ballads, so I was fine with that group going home. And 90 was definitely low for the hun-min-jay-bit team.

Alice Kim

Rooting for bitsaeon! my heart actually stopped when I saw that he was doing Drowning, ive ulted woodz since prodx101, felt like a full circle moment 🤭🤭

Soff

IMO 90 was such an unfair score I still don't know what the judges were on when they decided the performance was not worthy of more. It truly feels like an msnake tactic which sucks.

Amberlynn Tran

I personally think hun-min-jay-bit should have gotten a higher score. I'm no professional but compared to the other performances a 90 was way too low. It would have made sense if they were within the 94-96 range along with the other teams but a 90??

Chevrolete

Hey Jeff, there was like an episode that aired the day before this was aired which was like mid check up episode. It was pretty much all the groups coming together and checking out each others practice performances and they had to vote on who they believed was the strongest and weakest. Team DoReMiFa was voted the strongest and since they were voted the strongest they had the power to pick the performance list. And they picked jays team, I believe that since they went first the judges were expecting A LOT from them so that could have influenced them. Also just a little fun fact when this episode was filmed Jay had to fly back to Korea since one pact was doing a Japan tour, pretty much Jay had 2 concerts than flew to film the build up episode and than flew back to finish up the tour! Cant wait for your reaction to next week, all I’m going to say is those performances are ELITE

ok am i the only one that thought the water fire team was not that good? like there were good moments but that chorus was very boring imo. like sure they had good harmonies and their voices sound good but drama is heavily centered around the performance aspect and when they took that away from the song it wasn't nearly as impactful. also with a lot of these performances i wasn't fully swayed until the end of the performance like i feel like there were some arrangement issues.

onyx.

i agree with you, i thought that waterfire had the weakest performance

Zara

Hey Jeff! I follow the Build Up sub reddit and someone there usually screen records it. I can give you a link for the next ep if you forget to screen record if you like! But of course I can't guarantee someone will record it.I wouldn't suggest going to the subreddit yourself just because there are a ALOT of spoilers for the following ep from the live audience.

I think one of the reasons Hun-Min-Jay-Bit got a 90 as their highest score is because they went first. Maybe the judges were expecting more or didn’t want to give too high a score to start off? Or maybe they are just hearing something live that we can’t hear in the recording (especially with post production)? Idk but they deserved a higher score in my opinion, it was my second favorite performance after guilty for this round.

Gina ODierno

I agree with you about the vote around Jay's team. They had everything in it that was appropriate to the style of song, and then some. Incredible vocals. I can't stop replaying their performance, and it's the only one I got chills from (that's my barometer). Guilty had some really beautiful and haunting peak moments vocally, but in the middle the pacing seemed a little out of the pocket to lag before picking back up so it pulled me out of the performance a bit. Milky-up was fun, high energy, had some surprising vocals and a few really engaging moments, but over all I didn't think there were good blending of voices going on (which is what they pointed out as the justification for lowering the score of Jay's team). Strange.

ashley

totally agree with you on your thoughts regarding the score for hunminjaybit like idk what they heard live but still whatever it was i don't think 90 as the highest is justified. also i really loved the gift performance as well it was one of my favorite performances on this round

Irving

I don't know wth the judges were on, jay's team was literally saved by the online and the on-site votes....cuz they were the lowest for the judges votes...it does not make any sense

eve_ss

Audience and online votes literally saved HunMinJayBit team wow and I'm so glad they did! Like most of the time when I'm watching survival shows I get so frustrated whenever I see audience votes but now they did the right thing! 🫶🥹 Also, kudos to Jay btw. He had concerts abroad day before this performance and then flew back immediately for another concert just after they recorded this episode (I heard it was same day too omg) he's INSANE! 💪🙌 Last thing, mygaaaad Woodz song in a survival show? I'm cryinggg! and Drowning is literally my fave song of him 😭 (so I'm kinda bias lol) but still, yesss I totally agree that 90 score was so low! HunMinJayBit deserves higher score than that if not the highest tbh. We're lucky we still have the online votes 🙏 I'm guessing other reason why they gave that low score to their group was because they were the first group to perform so had to lower the points but still 90 is loww 👍

dylightfullygeeky

Yep afaik, Daylight savings time is a western thing, doesn't apply in Korea, the Philippines and Singapore (where you've been and where I'm from)

Loved the show and your reaction. I was really disappointed with the group they chose to send home. I’m going to be honest. When it comes down to it I would replay all the performances except for drama. Drama just seemed dull and I have no desire to listen to it again.

Ok so here's my quick opinion on all the performance from least to most liked for me (all were good though). 5th- Milky Up, Idk for me the performance aspect was good, however I think in the vocal aspect they don't come close to the other groups. I also don't love how their voices mix with the song. But, I do think Geonu fits this song way more because I do think this type of song fits his goofy movements without taking away immersion in the song. 4th- Water Fire, this performance was so surprising and Hayoon ATE this song up. I think it was a very smart way to rearrange the song. Although, I agree that the 1st half was better to me than the 2nd half (can't really explain why though). I think this one and Uptown funk don't highlight all the members as well as the other songs though. 3rd- Partners, they were flawless. I think with these last 3 it’s just genre/song preference for me. I really don’t have much to say, but Jeon Woong is actually so good. Now I see his 1st two song choices just weren’t good and I’m glad I can actually see what he’s capable of. 2nd- Do-Re-Mi-Fa, I just LOVED the song choice. Gwangseok voice is amazing and I almost cried. Junhyeok (the guy with the loud voice) is actually an amazing singer despite his weird troubles in this show. Actually, he’s a former day6 member and was in The Unit. I recommend you check out some of his solo work. But yeah this team was low-key set up to lose this round because 1. They aren’t as popular as others 2. The judges the whole show have always been more critical of them in particulaer 1st- Hun-Min-Jay-Bit, It was flawless and gave everything it needed to. I think the score didn’t make sense as well. I feel like the judges might just have had way to high of expectations and I think them going first hurt them as well.

Stefan

Once voting became part of the decision of who to send home, it was inevitable that the last group would be chosen, they don't have much fan appeal except for Yoone. Personally I would've send Drowning or Uptown Funk home, they both didn't really stick with me, but I rewatched the others.

Chevrolete

FINALE JUST GOT CONFIRMED TO BE 29TH and said to be pre recorded but also have a live broadcast (idk how this works yo)

Ayeyassha

maaan hearing a Woodz song in a survival show!!! crazy. The performance itself was sooo good! I can't stop watching it. I do think it should have been a bit higher scored tbh, especially compared to some of the other scores, but I can kind of get what judges are saying (kinda)

Dong Anh

about the order of the perfomance, during the mid-practice check up (when Milky Up got voted as Lower tier), Doremifa team got voted as Top tier so they were the one deciding the performing order :)))

howltthew

I feel like what they’re hearing live must be really raw vocals. Eunkwang is a master of vocal layering and harmonies. He is the one who did the vocal arrangement of Mayfly’s Love Poem in Kingdom. So I think he heard some flaws live which were not caught in the post production. But still, I think 90 was way too low for drowning team. I kinda feel like it was planned. Mnet needed a drama atp so idk huhu they deserve better. Thankful that they were saved I know they will have their redemption arc next week. I just fixed my one pick in this whole survival show and that is seunghun.

BaoziBang

I personally wouldn't have rated drowning higher either. They were technically great but they didn't make me feel anything. I even had to make myself focus on them once more like twice because I got distracted.

PT related question (if you don't mind): Is a dietician the best person to see to get a good meal plan when you're trying to get build muscle/get toned? I've given up on trying to count calories and I don't think what I'm eating now is working lol.

I get the comment about Woodz song. In a way everyone can all do big growly notes in this show. The thing that I find more difficult and get ppl more bonus points are vocal layering and harmonies. The way they arrange the song there’s shining moments for individuals, esp seunghun and jay, but nothing much in terms of harmonies and layering. They jsut all sing similar notes all together and may be some adlib belt near the end but nothing too out there from the base melody. I think that’s what the judges were trying to say by not feeling the chemistry of the group as a unit and the harmony being off. Bc there really isn’t any harmonies. The part they picked out, as an example during critics, sounds fine to us bc they’re just singing the same notes at different time so it sounded like a reverbing layer, but the judges probably can tell they were going to harmonize but trailed off into the same harmony instead. The Guilty group def have more difficult harmonies and layering. Same with the Drama group. That said, I agree the Drama performance could get bigger in the second half. When the background track goes quiet near the end, I was expecting them to go back to "I bring all the dramamama" with no music like a nod to the drop in the OG track and explode wiht big vocal layering so really highlight the belting and more powerful dynamics in the end. Guilty was a little better at this.

Zara

I agree about the Mnet snakery. They've done it before too on Build Up actually. In many previews for previous episodes they would tease performances and make it seem like a particular contestant screwed up (particularly Jay) and then I'd watch the episode and there were no screw ups by said contestant. So they're definitely going for the drama unfortunately.

Julie Pham

OMG I wanted a Bruno mars song on this show since the START. I mean he is one of the best male vocals out there. His music is jsut chef kiss. So many places to make it extremely difficult and interesting instead of a typical ballad. I wanted this show to do Bruno so badly. The uptown funk team was fun but I do think they could have done more vocally for it to be more competitive. Bruno songs sound fun but it can be so technically difficult if you really arrange it right. When he perform live, it’s incredible. I did hope they push the vocal difficulty and arrangement a little more.

Zara

Last comment I promise ahaha. I just have to commend Haram and Seohyung for being so open to trying pop. When they entered the competition, I don't think either of them imagined they would be singing Uptown Funk in hip outfits and DANCING!!! And Seohyung was kind of rapping too! All of this on a national TV program! They're just amazing!

RoseStar

I really loved DO-RE-MI-FA’s performance. I am so so happy and proud of Yeoone. Yeoone was amazing. I for one am excited for what is in store for Yeoone. As an UNIVERSE I am so happy to see the members of PENTAGON doing so well Solo wise, and I am patiently waiting for songs from Yeoone. I just love watching Yeoone performing on stage and smiling again. I also loved Partners Performance. The Guilty Choreo is lethal.

Virtual TimeLine

I think DO-RE-MI-FA made a mistake in choosing another ballad type song. It has been shown on this show a lot already and going for something entirely different will show diversity, adaptability and will stand out more because it is not predictable. The other teams did show this by choosing a modern rock song, sensual pop song, dark musical(ish) remake of drama and a fun song.

I think you can see more about Seunghun vocal on cix bsides. but also he hits notes in the last 2 cix come backs 😊 Cix music is amazing Also cix have a North american tour in May, they have a date on Canada too. 5/14 Montreal.

I just started watching your reaction to the episode, but I wanted to point out that there’s a lot of similarities between Build Up and Phantom Singer (I only watched one of the 4 seasons). PS was centered around opera and crossover music as opposed to build up. However, the team forming had a very similar pattern, and the last 4 member groups that were formed, debuted with those members. Thus I think they might actually debut with these members…? It’s true though that the top3 teams debuted in PS so maybe that was a factor. Since I believe that it’s only one quartet that’s going to debut from Build Up though, it might be different and the group might be formed as you said though… I guess we’ll have to see haha

Laila 💛

Yeah, for me it was totally wrong the 90 score to Jay's team, it doesn't make any sense. It got me very frustrated, but I agree with the eliminated team, at least. Let's see what happens in next episode...

meijiOrO

Thank you so much for doing the reaction for this show. You are the only way I watch the show. I refuse to watch live on youtube or look up on Twitter on what happened since those (live) comments tend to be from toxic trash all around. I can enjoy the show over here were it's nice and civil.

Lora K.

I think the low score of 90 is mainly the unfortunate case of them going first. There was no one before them to set the standard and when Partners went second they kind of set the range for the scoring. Also, the judge's comments made sense, they were lacking in terms of harmony and one member did admit to making a mistake, so there might be some vocal editing going on that the judges heard but we didn't. One the other hand I thought Up town Funk was quite lacking in terms of vocal skill and creativity. The ad-libs were a close replica of the original and did feel like a cover. They do have stage presence so I'll give them that.

Thao Pham

Hey Jeff, there are a lot of "behind the scenes" videos for Build Up that aren't shown during the episodes, which I find a bit strange since they could have filled the episodes with more of such content. They sometimes explain the context of an episode better and right now there are videos of the new mission songs :-) - buuut, it is often spoilers for the next episode. However, I feel like the whole context is missing while watching the episodes.

ANDREI

Guilty and drowning team performed the best here, in my opinion. Uptown funk was good but for me it was more on dancing and performance and it lacked vocal moments (which should be the focus since this is a vocal competition)

scarlett

random comment i never realized the daylight saving starts on different dates in different countries? we still got two weeks before moving the clocks - learning something new every day

jinkichimchim

i feel like sometimes judges criteria of giving points are quite weird, if u are judging one group for vocal performance then u should maintain same criteria for other groups too, just because you like someone's concept better doesn't make them a better performers . I get that there's performance aspects to everything but they sometimes seem to not have great arguments as to why they give law or high points so it's kinda unfortunate for me, i would like more technical and constructive criticism from them which i know all of them can provide

Oumou

The WOODZ cover reminds me that you should watch WOODZ' live on Lee Hyori's show (even if on your own, not necessarily a reaction). That was magical!

Hi Jeff. I agree with you that MNET is being a snake and manipulated the first team's score but for the opposite reason of what you think. I think MNET doesnt want them to win and favors another team to win instead. However since Jay has a lot of people voting for him and whatnot, this is their way of slowly dragging him/his team down and it won't be a surprise if they didn't win in the end. They've hyped up and gave exposure to other folks more and that's because that's their pick. I really really hope I'm wrong and you might be right. If I'm not wrong, Jay's team will go first again the next round and then it will give the "justification" to lower their score again because they are first and all that blah blah.

Nela00

Will they pick and chose who’s going to debut from different units or only one whole unit can debut as a group in the finals?
