as far as emily and lorelai go, i think emily was actually probably right- at least at this point in their relationship- that lorelai wouldn’t go back to her parent’s house anywhere near as regularly as she currently is. we have to remember that, before the pilot episode, lorelai was barely on speaking terms with them, only seeing her parents on major holidays or when she needed to. this is not something that i blame lorelai for whatsoever, though. although emily has good intentions most of the time, she has a tendency, as we saw in this episode, to prioritize herself and her happiness above lorelai’s. i’m not going to give anything else away because we learn a lot more about the complexity of their relationship as the series progresses, but there was definitely a lot of validity in emily’s fear- and, honestly, for good reason. i wish, though, like you said, that emily could muster up the strength to communicate that to lorelai instead of trying to manipulate her. that’s what gets them into these unhealthy cycles and lorelai deserves better than that.

this exactly!! emily wants a relationship with her daughter but can't just come out and say it. part of me thinks it may be tied into this old-money, high-society new england ideology of emotions = weakness. you don't show your true self, even to your loved ones. i see this theme come up a lot in literature with families similar to the gilmores. even rigid and "cold" parents may genuinely want to love their kids but not knowing how to do that without compromising what's been instilled in them their whole lives. i think this also reflects why emily and richard don't "get" lorelei or understand her or her philosophies because she's so different from the world they grew up in and they never fled from it like she did, so she confuses them. it's just really sad when you think about it :( how lorelei and emily both want to love and be loved by each other but there's this massive gap barring them from just being able to do so

Scott Patterson who played Luke reacted the same way on his rewatch podcast about Richard not stepping in for his mom being rude to Emily.
