Fun fact: Clare Kramer(Glory) did a podcast interview, and said the way she got the part of Glory was during her audition she acted like Jack Torrance from The Shining.

The Scoobies reactions aren't really "Needed". Would it have been nice? Sure. But needed? No. We've already explored a similar narrative beat when Buffy, Giles and Joyce found out. It's been explored. The fight scene with the knights and Glory however is needed. On first watch, it seems like a throw away scene but you need it to see how Glory got a hold of one them, tortures him, sucks his brain so he ends up in the hospital for Dawn to get a tidbit of what the key is. Also don't worry about not looking Riley. Most people don't. I'm happy to see you empathize with Dawn. That character got a lot of hate when the show aired. I remember folks feeling she was annoying and I'm sitting there thinking that the girl just found out her whole life is a complete fabrication. She's allowed to have some outbursts.

Something interesting you might want to know. This was intended to be the final season of Buffy, until it was picked up for another two seasons. I feel like maybe knowing that might help your mixed feelings about it so far. At least in the sense that so many things seem to be taking a new direction. Either way, I look forward to your thoughts going forward.

Hopefully no spoilers but I grew up with this, I graduated 1999 and watched from the beginning. This was supposed to be the last season. All promos aired it that way. It wasn't until the summer that I realized it was picked up on a different network. Thanks for reacting!

When you asked why Buffy would talk like that, that it was messed up, causing Dawn to get upset and tear up her room, Buffy was trying to explain things from Dawn's perspective, what she must be thinking: "She's not real. We're not her family, we don't even know what she is." And Dawn just happens to walk out at the worst possible time and hear it out of context, a trope that's maybe slightly overused. Same thing happens when Buffy hears her mom in season 3 episode 2 "Dead Man's Party" talking to...I forgot her name(Pam?), but it causes Buffy to get upset and think about running away again. Overall this is still my favorite season and I like Glory just because she's so difficult to categorize: She can either be ditzy or shallow and bubbly, or menacingly crazy, or just plain evil.

I preferred the previous episode, but I'd probably give this one a 9, too. Giles wrote that in his Watcher's diary because that's what his Watcher training dictates he do. They keep a diary of every little thing they encounter and discovery they make, on the assumption that they and their Slayer could die at any moment. The whole point was that if they did, the next Watchers then had all the information they needed to defeat the evil force that took their lives, and protect the world, which would certainly include who/what The Key is. That's why they have such detailed records/accounts of past vampires and slayer deaths: Watcher diaries that left nothing out. And he did keep it hidden. But yeah, he should've kept in a safe. They didn't show that convo with Buffy telling the crew because we've seen that explanation/reaction 3 times already - first with Buffy, then Giles, then Joyce. There was nothing new to get from it - it's disbelief, followed by acceptance due to the underlying feeling that you know it's true. That was just exposition we didn't need again, imo, so I think they made the right choice to skip it. And the point of that battle was to show Glory A.) knowing those Knights, and B.) capturing one of the Knights in order to get him into the hospital where both Ben and Dawn would find him. It's also the first time I feel like we've really seen Glory going out there and doing her own dirty work and not leaving it all to the minions or waiting for trouble to find her. I feel like they deliberately add a little more menace and danger to Glory with each subsequent appearance, partially because the window of time for whatever she needs The Key for is getting smaller and smaller. Just gotta say, I love how Team Dawn you are. That's always seemed kinda rare for people watching this season the first time through.

This episode is a 9 for me too, but I liked checkpoint better and Fool for Love (episode 7) is in my top ten for the whole show. Glory is a very interesting big bad, her mixture of menacing and superficial is very well written and well acted by Clare Kramer. Giles could have been a little more cautious but calling him stupid is an exaggeration. The place where he put his diary, it was established that Watchers keep diaries, is irrelevant. What is important is that it was one of the things that Dawn caught the adults around here trying to hide something that by that point she knows have something to do with her. I get that you were disappointed we didn’t see the reaction of the group to the revelation, but it wasn’t necessary because we know those characters so well that we can imagine how they react and the rest of the episode portrays each of their reactions perfectly. As for the fight scene at the end of which Glory captures one of the “medieval soldiers/monks”, it was necessary to advance the plot, it was something new. I agree, Dawn and Michelle Trachtenberg were the MVP of this episode. James Marsters is just a chemistry machine, his scene with Dawn and Buffy were fantastic. The reveal about Ben and Glory........ I will just say keep watching. I like the way this season reveals plot points by increments and once a question is answered it leads to others. First Dawn appears out of nowhere without explanation, then by episode 3 we find out why at the same time we have the introduction of the Big Bad. We find out that Glory is causing making people crazy, then we see that there’s a connection between Ben and Glory, we next find out that Glory is a god, and now we have further revelation about that connection. It’s so well written.

Buffy the vampire slayer very very rarely has throw away scenes. I get u find some scenes are pointless but they really arnt. Yea it would have been cool to see their reaction but I think seeing how the interact with dawn after knowing is much more important 🤷🏻‍♀️

Phoenix Dawn

Giles wrote it in the official watcher diary that he has to keep. It is part of his job description.

Phoenix Dawn

Joyce's face kills me when Dawn says "you are not my mother!".

Imo they nail the second half of the season. I def think Glory is a better bad than Adam. I do think that they maybe focused on Glory being too funny than scary, but I think she becomes scarier as the season goes on. I'm with you on Riley, I will never like him. I'm excited for the next one.

Ashley

Even though I have already said season 5 is my least favorite, I do believe the second half of the episodes will satisfy you. I enjoy them more than the first half of this season. I personally usually skip the first half of this season on re-watches until soon on to the finale. (*really* trying to be as vague and nonchalant as possible here*)

Season 5 is my favourite, but to me it's all about what themes you like, and the focus you like in the show. Michelle did an amazing job this episode for sure. I'm glad to see you really feel for her. Not many did/do. The second half of this season is definitely stronger even if the first half had the brilliant Fool for Love in it.

Scarlett Monrow

Giles should have written in code all the important things. If Glory had enough brains to send her minions to search the shop, they would have found it and read it.

Scarlett Monrow

Good episode. This is probably the only episode where I like Michelle's (Dawn's) acting. Most of time she is overselling it, being too theatrical, but with this episode it works.

Pho3nixX

Everything I would have commented on was already said. Great episode but best so far? Not for me that would be Fool For Love which is in my top ten for sure.

Briony Addey

I'm a big fan of Michelle Trachtenberg- I think the very fact so many fans find her so annoying is proof of how great she is. I can't understand how anyone could respond to Dawn with anything less than compassion- she goes through so much, she's only 14! Glad you loved Michelle /Dawn in this episode.

cil

it's so interesting that you like dawn, or at the very least...don't dislike her. so many first time viewers hate her when they watch the show. also, i think you make a valid point about gilles writing down all of the important info about dawn. it is very strange that he would do this, knowing that glory is in town looking for the key. and it's even more weird that he put it in a spot that was easy to find/get to. a drawer in the store where he works? .... that is kind of a silly error and something gilles is seemingly too smart to do.

Regarding the seasons fans have varying opinions as to which are best. I watched the show live and so 2 and 3 will always be my favorites as I related to the angst and humor the most. That said season 5 has really some really strong episodes still to come.

So something happened between Riley and Buffy in an earlier episode where Buffy got really upset at Dawn about something minor. This was after finding out Dawn is the key. Riley defended Dawn, seeing Buffy being unusually harsh. And this had happened a few times. Then Buffy lied about why she was being harsh because no one besides Giles and her mom knew about Dawn. Riley seemed to see that Buffy was hiding something and to me at least it's implied that was one of the things that came between them. Too subtle and him leaving was still really poorly executed but I believe that was something Buffy was holding back. Go back to the open of the season and Buffy wanted to learn more about herself and this power she has and midway through she feels that she isolated someone close to her (again that story was really poorly executed but going with the story as it is). So I think when Willow is hurt by Buffy not telling her Buffy feels that and desires to not push Willow away the way she pushed Riley away with the secret. So that's why, I think, she decides to tell them. That's probably not a good strategic reason but will just have to see how the rest plays out.

cil

as for why season 5 is considered the best among some fans...you'd need to finish out the season to see why. some of the season's best episodes are still to come.

Miah

Glad you like this episode. It's one of my personal favorites. It will never appear on anyone's Top 10 list, but I think it's amazing. I love Michelle's acting. I love the adoption metaphor. This was the episode that really made me like Dawn on my initial viewing. I actually got emotional and could finally empathize with Dawn. So excited for the second half of this season!

Daniel R

I agree with you about wanting to see the conversation about Dawn. I would have preferred that and them devising a gameplan for proceeding as normal as possible over Glory beating up a bunch of nobodies. You could have scrapped the fight, shown us the Scoobies getting the info on Dawn, and after the Intro we can see Glory interrogating that Knight. Who cares how she got him? She's a god, safe to assume that anybody would be quick and easy prey. As for Glory herself, I'm kinda meh on her as a whole but this episode did turn me around on her. As for Dawn, I was always on her side really only because Buffy's character was so frustrating during my first watch that I was willing to root for literally anybody else but Buffy lol

N0NaMeSowhat Blerp

Well he isnt an idiot. He did lock his store and also hid it inside the store..come on.

Ray D

Season 5 is my favorite. I think it tells the most cohesive and well told/interesting start to finish story. I also love glory. I think she’s such a fun big bad but when she needs to be serious she’s legit scary.

cs

It's prob in my top 10! It's one of those episodes I can't wait for a reactor to reach. Michelle's performance is just so good, and I love the way everything unfolds. Dawn's reaction is so realistic and affecting.

Kirstie Brote

She told me that when I met her, too. Clare is super sweet. My favorite Big Bad!
