I agree, it feels very rushed Angel coming back so soon but for me, it's also important as the show now needs to prepare for his spin-off and although I think killing him in S2 was the right thing to do as it was their way of trying to redeem him a little but I also felt disappointed at the time because I wanted to see him face the aftermath of everything he's done. As for Angel as a character, I'm not a big fan of the love story with Buffy because excluding his stint as Angelus, he is the most undeveloped character at this time. He does eventually grow on me though and I absolutely love him in his own show so hopefully you will too. As for Faith, for me, she is everything Kendra should have been and Eliza Dusku is brilliant as her. The only thing I didn't really like in this was that hoofed vampire. He was really easy to kill in the end but I like Mr Trick. I would probably give this an 8 as well although believe it or not, I consider the episodes we've seen so far to be the weaker ones but they are still really good. Great reaction!

One thing I think you need to remember is that this show is 20 years old now. It was network tv. Keeping off one of it's main stars that were just announced to have his own show for more than 3 episodes was probably a network decision. It's way different now with Netflix and Hulu and stuff. But the biggest thing to remember about Buffy was network tv had maybe 95% of its TV shows were one-offs, where the story had a conclusion 22 mins or 44 mins in. Buffy didn't follow the formula. Buffy was brand new to TV with things like killing off main or recurring characters and extensive season-long arcs and call-backs from previous stories in older seasons.

I mostly gave it a 9 for Faith. Shes one of my top characters in the Buffyverse. I do agree the whole Angel thing was rushed but shows got to show I guess. As for why Giles w asnt invited ever to the retreat I kind of head cannoned that because of his Ripper past they exclude him from alot. Like they cant not have him be a Watcher because his mom and her family are legacy's and hes amazing on the knowledge but they can exclude him from Watcher games so they do.💜

Your not alone, i actually dont like angel and never watched the spin off show because i couldnt really stand him in buffy.

Yea gotta agree with the others. I would've liked Angel to be gone for longer... but you just couldn't do that on WB in 1998. Producers and writers didn't have the same amount of control they do now. In current television media, there are several avenues you can go down to find a home for your product. But, back then, you had strict rules to follow from the network. They'd read scripts, and send them back to the writers telling them what to change. A lot of creative licensing was lost to the execs in the big office. I'd stake my life savings on the fact that Joss had to fight tooth and nail just to get them to OK Angel being gone for this long. I like the rest of the episode... but I don't love it. The writing is snappy so far this season, so the less important scenes are more interesting than they would've been in season 1 or 2. Faith is a cool addition to the show, because she's do different than the rest... but idk... I'm not really feeling the story with the Kalisto. So happy they killed him. He was like Season 1 Master style. We're beyond that now.

As someone who watched the show live, Angel's return never seem rushed to me because I had to wait like 4 months for Angel's return lol.

Remember, sometimes the monster is only meant to represent something for a character. They aren't meant to last past the point of revealing something about that character, in this case Faith. Faith's freak out when seeing Kakistos implies the horror she went through and the hell her watcher went through before she died. Imagining what would make a Slayer react that way even though they face horrors everyday makes one think it must've been beyond awful.

He gets better heck there are times I like the Angel series more. Believe me he grows and becomes a great character.💜

Agree with others, same as my comment about 3x1, network TV, gotta keep the stars together - hence Angel dream sequences in first 2 eps. I'm betting it was also definitely demographic fan service - I've watched some other buffy reactors, and lets just say I now understand more, as a couple of younger female reactors are, um, very pro "bangel" - contrasting the male reaction which is usually "ughh" type.

well if you want to spoil the show for a new reactor? I've seen this with other shows and other reactors as well - guest character appears and suddenly everyone is commenting on this random guest starring character that just appears. Well that just means the reactor knows they're going to be more important ... esp if you say "top character". I prefer as unspoiled a reaction as possible - like the surprise at Eliza Dushku being guest appearance. Then the questioning if they are going to treat her differently from Kendra. As long as you don't spoil the Sam and Dean Supernatural crossover where they team up with Buffy, after Snyder resummons the Master, but it is actually goes wrong and is the Dr Who Master.

I think it may feel very rushed for you because you are watching the episodes right after each other but when the show first premiered, we had to wait 3 long months for Buffy to come back to Sunnydale so it didn't feel rushed. It felt like 3 months had passed. And after that, 2 whole weeks. The show felt less rushed shown on a weekly basis.

Like many others have already said, there are contractual reasons why you can’t keep a main cast member from being in every episode. And the cop out with the dream sequence were becoming repetitive. Considering that, besides the number of episodes since the season finale, there was the whole summer break during which time didn’t stop. And I think that they made the point in the first 2 episodes of the season that things happened to Buffy, to the gangs, that we don’t get to see because the structure of the show, as established since season 2, follows what happens during the school year. It’s our time frame. So after Angel returning after 4 months doesn’t feel rushed. Obviously it might be a bit early to discuss what his return means and how it will play in the future, maybe let’s see what happens first. After all Angel return was just the last few seconds. This episode, based on the title, introduce 3 potential recurring characters: Faith, the new slayer, Scott Hope, the new love interest and Mr Trick, the new antagonist (obviously not Kakistos, who was just plot device). This is the return to new normal for Buffy. School, slaying, dating, family and friends with more or less obvious different dynamics.

Taking a left turn here. While I do not hate the character Angel ( I do prefer Angelus ), I absolutely detest the romance between him and Buffy. It is the whiniest relationship I have ever seen. Every time they have a scene together they both sound like they are going to burst into tears. I’m done with my mini rant.

What you have to remember is this show is 20 years old, the things you call cliche and predictable now are because of how many of the ideas in this show have been repeated by others, it was pretty groundbreaking for its time

When this aired live, Angel was killed, then the summer hiatus. I dont remember it feeling rushed when he came back, in fact, i think i was truly shocked.

While the writers did bring Angel back very soon, they may not have had a choice. This is conjecture, but if they want to keep David Boreanaz they have to keep using him and he'd probably want more screen time than ongoing dream sequences. Actors need to pay the bills and they want scenes, so if they cut him loose and tried to bring him back midseason, he might have found other work and not been available.

The ladies did (do) love that, indeed. 😂😂

i keep seeing a lot of reactors being mad that the bad guys are episodic and "shit", but the bad guys are plot devices, you know? each one seems to bring out a situation, or event for the characters to move them along on their journey - or for the group (and veiwers) to learn something new. Also, buffy (now faith) is a Slayer - chosen, and imbued with mythical and magical powers of super strength, speed and healing. They would be useless if they couldn't take out the vampires and demons they face on a regular basis lol. Kakistos was a way to bring Faith in, and her freak out shows the horrors she experienced, and how she lost her watcher (who she clearly cared about), and how she ran and tried to avoid dealing with the situation. Buffy helped her, and in turn, Faith kind of helped Buffy open up.

Holi117

also, ps, technically the ring does not open the portal - its a coincidence. The moment buffy starts to let go, heal, move forward, the moment she says goodbye - that's the moment Joss Whedon is like 'let's just mess with her again!'

Okay you got to think back.. when you say cliche.. a buffy fan who washed it in real time.. who never knew if the show is coming back..Joss whedon said he ended each season with a thought that this show might not come back..and then combined it with Buffy was out when school was over Buffy was off what school came back then Buffy came back so we had months in between the waiting in agony to.. we didn't get the 1 2 3 he's back episodes.. you have the pleasure of watching it all within a matter of weeks and days if you want.. and you say cliche we say original.. love your 🤣😂👍 reaction lol
