Some of you have said you'd like to do some drawing exercises with me, so I'm going to try new exercises each month and see how it goes! Any of you who are artists, feel free to join in and share your work on the discord or in the community tab :)

First up: Designing a character from scratch!

Today is just for gathering references. Above is a pinterest board of mine. I've chosen a breed I haven't ever drawn as a character before, and recommend you go with something you've never/rarely drawn either! This will mean you're less likely to fall back on drawing the new character the same way you always have old ones, and hopefully give them unique appeal. I've chosen the borzoi for their long snoots, elegant poses, and long flowing fur.

When selecting reference images, try to find lots of different poses, especially ones with movement. The way the animal moves is a great way to see what kind of personality or character can be lended to the design later on when we translate it into an anthro!

Finally, here's how I'm breaking up the exercises over the course of the month. The dates are loose 'deadlines,' but they're not strict, just post what you've made whenever it's done. :)

  • Today: Gather reference of an animal of your choice.
  • By Monday the 12th - Draw from the reference
  • By Monday the 19th -  Sketch a furry version! (I'll stream mine on Tuesday the 15th)
  • By Monday the 26th - Colour!

I think i will try with a honey badger.

This is a great start! I decided that I want to pick something not only that I haven't drawn before, but that I'd find challenging to make into an appealing character design. I think I have a suitably weird species picked out. Doing a little more research before I commit, but I am SO EXCITED!
