I like to play around with different musical ideas to see how they work, and one of the best ways I've found to do that is the Random Scale Challenge, where I take a completely random scale and try to pick it apart just like I would a "real" scale. Plus, it doubles as a composition game too, since the scales don't tend to have been used much, so they're great inspiration for new songs that you might never have thought of otherwise.
