Even Sozin wasn't purely evil. He didn't go to the island with the intention of killing his old friend, he went there to help him. Similar to Zuko at the end of Book 2, when the opportunity showed up at the last second, he made a snap choice. I always feel like he died with regrets about everything given his opening line about remembering a time when everything was brighter.

Definitely agree with the Sozin-Zuko comparison. They bought have a desire for something greater Sozin is making the whole world as prosperous as the Fire nation and Zuko it is restoring his honor. The Avatar was in both their ways and in a moment they chose their desire over what was right. Sozin could never make amends with Roku but Zuko can
