It's not that they're not happy together it's that Zuko is angry all the time and Mai has spent years pinning after him, and I think he for her because of him pulling away from Jin, and then he's upset about the avatar and Iroh and being a butthole and Mai is sick of him. We haven't really seen how they are together under normal circumstances.

And Mai was the one to defend Ty Lee when Zuko was mean. She just says things in a dead pan voice, she wasn't being mean to Ty Lee. People totally misunderstand her. I love her though.
