I didn't read the books until after season two and when I read the funeral scene, it kinda went the same way as it did on the show, but it didn't feel as jarring in the books because that level of melodrama fit in that space – not to mention, Belly and Conrad's character just feel so much more different in the books so it worked there. But it's so hard to take it seriously in the show, lmao

The thing about Conrad is that he believes it’s his job to take care of literally everyone. To be the responsible one. He genuinely believes he’s a failure and that he can spare the people around him by pushing them away. But by pushing them away, he just hurts them more. It’s a self fulfilling prophecy.
