I feel like Connell isn't scared of settling down as much as the imbalance in their relationship scares him. Like the fact that Marianne would do anything to make him happy even if it would go against her own needs and feelings. I think that's why he refuses to ask her because he knows she would never honestly communicate her boundaries. She has a very low sense of self-worth which was fueled by the environment she grew up in. At the same time I think that a part of him feels unworthy of her as well. She has always said she thinks he is smart and believes in his writing, when his stories keep getting rejected. He doesn't want to make himself vulnerable and ask her to move in because then they would both feel the imbalance between them concerning their financial differences and their privilege. And this is exactly what is so tragic about their relationship that their insecurities installed by their backgrounds which they can't control always get in the way of their connection.

This episode made me really happy and really sad when we see that small step of Connell working on showing his affection at the pool. But then immediately see that he just couldn’t communicate what he wanted to say to her and then I knew that it led into their split that was shown in the episode.
