Criticism and Feedback - 2023 (Patreon)

Hey everyone! I need your input!

I have been analyzing my recent art, trying to figure out what works, what doesn't, and how I can switch things up to make it better, so I decided to make an anonymous criticism and feedback form to hear it directly from you

Before we get to the form itself, I just wanted to talk briefly about what makes feedback (positive or negative) be as helpful as possible for me. I'll be paraphrasing an amazing article on feedback by Dan Felder, so you can find it and give it a read if you'd like to read it in full

The bulk of the idea with helpful feedback is that I want to know how you feel about the work that I post, rather than have the criticism be composed solely by what you think I should do to improve.

Dan puts it in a really good way equating it to a doctor visit: the doctor needs you to tell them all the symptoms you're feeling so that they can prescribe proper treatment. If you just come to them asking exactly for the treatment that you think you need, even if correct, they wouldn't know what the issue really was

Of course you can still suggest changes, just make sure to tell me about how you feel first! For example, a helpful piece of feedback could be: "I'm starting to feel bored with your animations because they all follow a similar format, maybe you could change the formula a bit by adding more closeups to break the monotony"

Another important aspect of feedback is what Dan calls "bright spots". These positive pieces of feedback are good, not because they make me feel better, but because it helps me identify aspects that are already working, that I can then focus/expand on and know that they will work

Basically, identifying a problem with my work and trying to solve it can ultimately fail. But identifying a really good thing and then focusing on it is pretty guaranteed to improve my work in the future!

Sorry that this ended up being a bit too verbose, but I know that you'll be one of the few people to get to the end of this text, so I want to make sure that I can use as much of the feedback you're sending me as possible.

I want to improve, I want to create good content that people can enjoy. So from time to time I need to take a breather and analyze what has and hasn't worked, so I can correct the course for my future work
