People are going to ask, "What triggers this monstrous transformation?", cause they always do. :P  Well there is a defined reason this all happens.  Krystal doesnt know it though, and we keep her POV though 98% of this chapter.  

If the series continues (it would be.. part 3? depends on if Slippy gets eaten or not) more will be revealed.  But lets not get ahead of ourselves.
