I like an all mailbag episode, but not as a replacement for the regular show. Don’t stop experimenting though!

I can clarify some stuff about OW2. 1) The current beta is a tech beta, and it is a true beta. Blizzard is one of the few studios that still runs real betas, not just early access to the full game. There are going to be several more betas going forward. 2) The current beta is missing the PvE half of the game, at least 4 new heroes (which were shown to Game Informer as silhouettes in a presentation) and possibly more, a new core PvP game mode (and all the maps that go with it), and most of the updated hero models. The UI is largely placeholder, along with a ton of effects and other assets. 3) It looks like the “same game” in the same way fighting game sequels look the same. I wonder if Hanson could tell the difference between all the Mortal Kombat sequels. I’ve been explaining OW2 in comparison to fighting game sequels — same characters with mostly the same moves all carried over, with all the same core systems from the previous game. It’s not an unusual thing. 4) The one deviation is the shared PvP between games, which I think people are being performatively confused by. On at least 2 previous episodes of this very show, Hanson has clearly and concisely explained the concept of shared PvP, but with the tone of the most confused person who has ever lived. At some point I hope he drops that. It’s been years at this point. It’s ok to learn new things. This can’t just be a thing you don’t understand forever. (BTW, Path of Exile 2 is doing basically the same thing.) 5) You aren’t wrong about the production timeline being absurdly long. One of the more outspoken Blizzard devs during the big scandal tweeted at one point that Bobby Kotick frequently had the OW team stop work on OW2 to work on little experiments that went nowhere, wasting months of production time, and it’s not hard to imagine him trying to get them to make an OW battle royale like Apex or whatever. And IGN reported that the OW team also had to stop and help with World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, just to get it out the door. It seems like they’ve barely been allowed to work on OW2 for much of this time.

Re: Elden Ring play time, Sarah got it exactly right on! I agree, I think it's clear that they didn't anticipate players would try to do 100% playthroughs. Based on Miyazaki's comments, their idea was that players would take different paths through the game and never see everything in one go. It's designed for you to miss things and skip things. I think the full completionist approach is burning some people out
