Dive into the mid-2000s with us as we welcome music critic, essayist, and Bandcamp contributor Erin Margaret Day! We’re talking about Axes by Electrelane and Night Life by Erase Errata. Check ‘em out and leave questions and songs below for Matt and Erin before Wednesday, March 30!

Erin really knows her stuff, so between her and Matt, it’s sure to be an episode full of bands you’ve never heard of but can’t wait to listen to. (I might be projecting a bit there.)

Leave a song for us to listen to, or ANY question about music on this post by Wednesday!

“What’s CrossFade,” you ask?

CrossFade is MinnMax’s music podcast hosted by Matt Helgeson and produced by Jason Dafnis where a guest has Matt review one of their favorite albums and vice versa. We publish every other Friday, so subscribe, rate, and review wherever you get podcasts: https://apple.co/3kWBb5K

Even if we don’t get to your song this episode, we’ll add it to the CrossFade Community Spotify Playlist (https://spoti.fi/3aRRgox) and your song might be pulled on a future Community Shuffle episode, so keep sharing!

Thanks for checking it out!

Y'all like to make fun of U2, but why don't like them? They've got some bangers!

What song has single-handedly done the most good for humanity?

We took our daughter to see a kids rock band she loved. We were among 300 parents and kids. When the band ran out, full of energy, they realized about 280 people didn’t want to be there and gave them deafening silence. The band laughed it off and put on a great show regardless. What’s the one live show where you felt the most empathy for a performer? *** Heres the band. https://open.spotify.com/track/6dS3w7LJy5O6JWElMRWmHl?si=ZFSnGpFET7amltUHbXhVtw&utm_source=copy-link

On September 9th, 2014 every Apple user got the free U2 Album “Songs of Innocence”. This has been a frustration to me because nearly 8 years later my phone will still randomly play songs from this album despite being a Spotify music user. That being said, if you could make every iPhone today automatically add one album from the past to it, what would it be?

Are there any songs or albums that you love mostly because of nostalgia? You wouldn't necessarily put it on a top 10 but will go back and listen just to bring back some good memories. https://open.spotify.com/track/6Nyje8hnMHKNJI5t7Gsl32?si=fGeuNVKtQl6tkph30an-jg&utm_source=copy-link

Every time this happened, my wife would curse U2. When she finally switched to an android phone, she said the absence of U2 it was the best feature.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6fY-ne_e2M This song, particularly this version, is my recommendation for this week. "The song will be between us" or "Pisnya Boode Pomizh Nas". There are other, funkier and more nuanced arrangements of this song, but this version of just the piano and the original songwriter is absolutely haunting. I've said goodbye to a lot of people recently as well as the place I've called home for the past 5 years and I really don't know when I will see them again or go back to Kyiv. The lyrics and the reverb of the Piano perfectly capture this sadness and uncertainty. I had a three hour bus ride from a small Polish town to Krakow after an emotional goodbye with someone who also fled the war and I, no kidding, listened to this on repeat between 10 and 20 times. The songwriter (and singer of this version), Volodymyr Ivasyuk, is one of the most legendary Ukrainian songwriters. Like many greats, he died young and under mysterious circumstances. A lot of his lyrics involve nature and symbolism, a deep contrast to the industrial imagery we so often associate with Eastern Europe at the time. Just for example, here's the chorus' text translated Don't hide the blue gleam of your eyes Sing for me one last time This Song I Will Take As A Memory And The Song Will Be Between Us For your voice, for your voice is like a great flood And I am like an ear of grain, green and full The Yellow Leaf Falls and a green one will grow And you'll always be near me in this song https://open.spotify.com/track/3x47HXbIY4iBJ5lHnMokZg?si=4b26692e580b4f56 Here is the full-band arrangement for comparison
