Robot arm!! [download below] I learned so much doing this, both about rigging and anatomy. I loved the learning curve of getting started in rigging; it's really easy to get your feet wet, and just keep getting in deeper without even noticing. I still have a ton to learn but it feel good to know I could probably figure out most basic mechanic stuff that I might want to do.

Here's some test animations (looks best downloaded). It's designed to work with a Rokoko mocap rig, because it can track hands, now (more on that later)!!, So it should play nice with the rest of my workflow (and other folk's, too), and the rest of the mocap data I'm posting. My thought is if I apply mocap data to a regular character and this arm simultaneously, it should all just line up, and all I have to do is delete the original arm of the character and hey, robot arm!

The hand is parented directly to the mocap rig bones, but the arm is a separate IK chain, parented to the shoulder and solving to the wrist. I'm trying to figure out the best way to make a tutorial, because this is some really fun stuff to know!

Honestly probably the most useful part are just the random bits on their own. I modeled a bunch of little parts ahead of time, so I could design the arm and bash stuff together without having to pause every couple minutes to model a new piece. They're fairly flexible (if you look, you'll see the same few pieces repeated over and over, but it's not obvious)! I also haven't really ever tried to model the die-cast steel look before, and I'm really into it.

This is beautiful! did you do the tracking of the fingers with Rokoko mocap too?? Another question, I love the final touches you do to your creations that look always very cinematographic (the noise, some color aberration... ). I see it's not in the blender file, do you apply it in after effects? blender compositing? just magic? Thanks!

IanHubert

Yeah! Rokoko recently released some gloves- they're ridiculously responsive :D And yeah! You can replicate a lot of that look in blender (they have both noise/diffusion/aberration), but I also have an after effects composition with a bunch of adjustment layers in there with different effects I usually use for final renders. It's just kinda a habit. There's an addon called FilmConvert I use with a lot of logarithmic footage that's also fun to stick on low-contrast CG renders that does a bunch of the lifting- but I'm also pretty obsessed with just a good old diffusion pass (so great for getting rid of that sterile cg look).

IanHubert

Ah thanks Jan! :D The textures are kinda low res, but I think it works regardless. It always turns out there's just one small spot on an image texture that works JUST right, and I'll use it over and over.

oh man, holy wow. I got the suit a while back after seeing you do magic w/ it. Loving it so far but seeing what the gloves can do has me drooling. What's your hot take on the gloves? Wasn't sure if the first release of 'em would be buggy or whatever.

This is great - so many different learnings in here. Now I need a rainy weekend for playtime

Insanely freaking cool <3

This looks like a very cool way of using blender to test mechanical parts before 3d printing them. Looking forward to learning how to rig this arm but it looks very complicated.

IanHubert

It's not all that complicated! It's basically just the same few basic techniques repeated over and over until it looks complex :D BUT YES! It's a GREAT way to test stuff out. I'm mocking stuff up using IK constraints right now, actually, and hopefully I'll be able to laser-cut them out and just have everything work... we'll see how it goes!
