Been letting myself enjoy the last few weeks of summer (I feel like Winter's going to be a tough one), but I've still been working hard on the HyperBole scene!

Just finished the scene below. I was imagining compositing one of the HyperBole contestants into some sped-up drone footage, skimming over beaches and deserts, and it got me thinking about the old salt flats and other Prime Racing Landscapes , and how it'd probably be way more interesting to show all the training than the actual event itself (the whole, "since I was a kid I always knew I wanted to be a HyperBole Champion!!!" schtick).

I'm still super tempted (it'd be fun to release it in like 1 minute episodes, all done from one POV, kinda Isometric god's eye (always wanted to do an episode of something isometric))- but I really gotta finish up some of these other episodes, first.

Haze can be so hard. I always make it just a little brighter, then just a little darker, then brighter, then darker, tweaking the contrast forever.

I was trying to dial in a sunshine version for a while, but I just wasn't feeling it compositionally. ACTUALLY, I started this scene in the pouring rain, then turned it into a day scene, then kinda back to a murky foggy evening look, so kinda went full circle.

Also made a quick popcornbot (a cousin of TERD from the upcoming Dynamo Dream episode).

I did a version of this scene before, with a mocap crowd, and it looked SUPER bad. I couldn't remember how to cheer, so I was just flailing my arms over my head and Kaitlin was cracking up (maybe a little too hard?). I ended up re-animating it and it worked significantly better, but I still ended up adding the popcorn robot mostly to distract the eye, hahaha.

ALSO! Finished up this shot! You can download a preview here (download it, don't use the google drive preview- it looks SO bad (this stuff doesn't compress well)). I'm pretty happy with how it turned out- I kept going back and adding more little details, and I'm glad I did. There's still stuff I could update (the wall on the left is clearly the blocking geometry I never really got around to doing anything with), but I think it's done for now.

Actually, I'm not a particularly great animator, so I'm really pleased with the animation flow- it's more what I was hoping to get with the whole sequence, kind of this flowing kinetic energy, go go go type thing. I want to see if I can get one more shot like that in there, and then I'll call it good.

Ideally I'll be able to upload the whole thing to Instagram, which gives me a convenient limit of one minute (honestly I wouldn't bother with tailoring anything for instagram, except I really do need to put some sort of cap on this.)

I have Impossible Acoustic lined up to do the audio- I'm very excited about that, and Wilbert Roget II might be composing some music- we'll see.

Also working on a little title shot- it's not quite punchy enough yet, maybe?? The animation is basically just a flyby of the neon Hyperbole logo with wild background graphics.

Also, I'm kind of just following my gut in terms of what I'm sharing here, so you guys can see what's going on, but also not everything, so you still get the experience of watching the final for the first time, because I feel like that's the most fun? But maybe that's just a me thing, and you guys would rather just see stuff where it's at at all times? I dunno! Let me know!

Anyways!! Talk soon! Just wanted to show you some of what I've been busy with!

I say keep doing it as you are, and don’t give away too much. I’m a big fan of watching movies and shows knowing as little as possible or only just enough to let me know I want to to watch it. Way more enjoyable that way.

Maybe it's just 4am brain talking, but I really like seeing how some bits are made, but then as you point out still being able to see everything in the final version as fresh as possible, fully agree with Edward Baker's comment above (or below?) mine. What you're doin is perfect my dude, and I/we're all massively grateful for it!!

Same from me, as nicely said by Edward and Gehrig above. I think the mix of tutorials, behinds the scenes stuff, sharing assets, musings and previews of projects you're working on is great as it is. For me its a lovely balance of practical and fun. I'm really enjoying it and greatful for how much its inspiring me to push on with my projects.

Woah, cool! I like how everything blends together with greenscreen and such - awesome job!

Looks absolutely incredible.

I enjoy the breakdowns of little bits, but do enjoy the surprise of the final and then maybe some backtrack to behind the scenes? All the tutorials have been helpful for my own work. It would be great to see some 'making of' one of the vehicles from concept to 3D asset. How long has this project taken you? I feel like you've generated a huge volume of work in such a short time, especially as an animated piece. Would be interested to know more in just overall process too.

beautiful... how did you get your fog to not look like crap in cycles?

Anonymous

This is insanely gorgeous, I love it. I agree, the bits and tips are great but I would like to watch the final result a bit fresh. Also, I love the guy on the second plane scratching his head like he's a bit clueless 😁

Anonymous

What is your method for adding noise to your final image?

Anonymous

I’d love to continue to see live realtime screen captures. No editing necessary. Just watching the process in real time.

Anonymous

I can just hear the Wilhelm scream in that clip.

Anonymous

Ian, you should have the red rider flip the bird as they pass the antagonist rider.

Kai Christensen

Very very excited. HyperBole is the first sport ever I would genuinely be a fan of and watch on TV.

I wanted to! It's one of the big reasons I think I'm going to try to dive into rigging hands, hahaha I'm hoping to have a couple pre-rigged hands that I can just drop onto my photoscan models, so 1.) I don't have to scan them perfectly (they're the hardest part) and 2.) I- yeah, don't have to rig them and stuff.

Anonymous

There is actually a video about that, about his postproduction workflow :)

Plot and details I like to see in the final, becayse there's always something you throw in which makes the episodes great to watch. But for background details like crab battle or the fact you made a train doesn't give away so much plot that it would spoil the episode.

Also, rewatching the shot, it's really good in how it uses the screen motion to direct your eye. The framing of the bike on the right pushes your attention left, then the swipe motion happens, then the bike tumbles upwards onscreen to the top right, and then the red bike takes over that focus by taking up space where the bike crashes down, then shrinks a little and takes your eye with it for the swoop over the first bike. It's a pretty tight shot but it reads really nicely because of the framing and motion within the frame.

these shots are extremely gorgeous!! 😍

As always it looks fantastic, Ian. I think you should always show us stuff when you think it's ready to show. If you start putting some arbitrary restriction or deadline on when you should show it I think it would be detrimental and possibly kill your enthusiasm a bit. If you want to see some amazing rigging in Blender check out Chris Jones (if you haven't already). https://www.chrisj.com.au/search/label/Human He also recently put a 'universal human' rig up for sale which is most definitely AAA quality. I can say from rigging experience that what he's done with it would take weeks of work, assuming you even know exactly what to do going in. When it comes to realistic human rigging, he is the master. I would suggest reaching out to him for advice, as a Blender user he may well be a fan of yours...!

Ah, that's awesome!! I remember his "The Passenger" film from- whoa, 14 years ago?? Dang- that entire page is mind blowing. I think I've seen some of his tests/demos floating around on twitter, but hardn't realized they were all from the same guy. That's super inspiring.

I love that we can see the amazing modeling and animation put in these scenes, and at all moments the only thing in my mind is "I'm pretty sure a video about how Ian modeled these popcorn would be the most entertaining point of my week" hahahahaha

Just amazing... I saw the aerolon moving in the shot, the first time I watched it!! :) Loved the movie on bones and IK (although I confess it was beyond my current brain capacity level, after the control + i... But loved it nonetheless. Honestly, I think what you're doing is great I don't think you need help from us in terms of coming up with things to educate or wow us with. Maybe do a "Frankenstein" Level... for clever (maths) people and an "Igor" Level for the rest of us :) ;) Thanks Ian, I so enjoy your content... long may it continue.

Awesome work. Once i suscribed to your patreon i did a sleepless night reading all the awesome post. I just could not stop reading ! This is absolutely awesome ! Could i ask you, your hardware for heavy scene ? I will change my computer and wonder if i must go for high GPU or CPU. GPU could be limited by ram quantity and i do not know if 24 GB could be sufficient.

Anonymous

Ahahah, this looks soooooooo cool !! I'm currently planning a project with flying bikes myself so I'm so excited to see this and curious to know more about the process. Fantastic job. Thanks so much for sharing all the goodness with us !!

The popcorn robot is so awesome!

Buckaroo Banzai! You're too young to know about Buckaroo Banzai! :-)

Seriously PayPal and Patreon are giving me a headache it took me 7 days to just renew the membership ..don't know what's going on with them it was smooth before but now it's getting more difficult to renew ....is there a yearly thing so I can pay once and forget it...

Blender runs wonderfully with high GPU. Definitely put your money there and the new NVIDIA cards just came out.

IanHubert

Oh really?? Yeah 200 folks disappeared over the first of the month- I just figured it was cause folks cancelled because times were tough- I'll look into it! I'm sorry about that- very weird :/

Anonymous

Dude, you absolutely killed it over on the Kitbash3d stream! The chat was going nuts, it was great. You should do more live stuff 👍

Anonymous

Yeah! Loved watching it so much, makes me wish I could just watch Ian do this stuff all day

Anonymous

Yep but i wonder if 10 GB vs 24 GB. Twice the price for the 3090

Anonymous

Popcorn robots make me hungry.

Anonymous

ian, your haze looks amazing, are you using the volume scatter one ? i'm using that volume scatter and it really affects the render time by alot, do you have any better solution for that ?

Anonymous

SIX BUCKS for popcorn?!? That's a dystopian future.

Anonymous

Haha! Very useful in any number of situations. No one has gotten the reference! And Lithgow's "laugh while you can..."
