At some point I'd love to make an Actual Tutorial with some techniques I find the most helpful (I have a project in mind that could be pretty fun, I think), but until then here's a timelapse of putting a couple graphics together- I recommend scrubbing around to any bits you might be interested in. Graphic Design is like a whole friggin' craft with a whole friggin' skill set- a skillset I don't really possess. But if I can make something that isn't Distractingly Bad that I can use to fill out a scene, I'm happy :)

I always did this stuff in After Effects, but actually the jump to blender was so nice. Lattices are great for being able to sculpt text (as is being able to convert the text to mesh and tweak the shapes with proportional editing), and then just incorporating it with other objects in a familiar 3d environment was great.

Oh, and on the chance any of you might want it for anything, here's the video menu asset. That said, it's pretty specific :P

Making some graphics in blender

oh my god i manifested this

Cool! It's good that youtube can slow down the speed of videos XD

How tasty and stylish! But hey, don't tomato pieces fall one through another in the beginning? is that ok?:)

IanHubert

Yeah, I probably could have tweaked that more :) The nice thing about making graphics that exist on screens though, is that it wasn't me that was cutting corners, it was some poor overworked designer in-world just trying to finish things up on a deadline :P

Really interesting approach. I was making title sequences for a short clip I made just last week, and I usually make the typography in Photoshop and animate in AE. I was thinking to myself how neat it would be to be able to say the ENTIRE thing was done in Blender but I never got around to doing it. This is an impetus, thank you so much Ian!

I'm starving.....

This is right on time- I am just introducing a new health drink and was thinking of using Blender to make some vids for the web page- great timing, Ian, thanks!

Ah amazing. These workflow videos are so inspiring. I want to get a much better handle on the animation tools in Blender, Ian did you do any good courses/tuts to learn the graph editor tools more in depth, or did you find trial and error to be the better teacher?

Anonymous

classic vegemeat :), I like that one

IanHubert

Ooo I definitely did trial and error, but I suspect a good introductory course would speed things way up :D. In general I thought it was really intuitive, until I got to quaternions, hahaha, those things are wild.

Cool! I'll try a lil of both then, thank you so much dude! :D

your tacoburger ad seems inspired by this burger ad, that was shot in practical https://youtu.be/kzEU3wBVPXs?t=219 if you haven't seen it, I'm sure you'd enjoy the number of silly robots used to make it

Anonymous

Ian!!!!!! Bro you are awesome 😂😂😂 I never get bored watching your videos

IanHubert

Oh man WHAT!? Does he build a custom rig for like every shot? This is amazing! Yeah I was definitely trying to reference the long somewhat bizarre tradition of "advertising food by having it fly through the air or splash out of the bowl/cup/popcorn bucket in slow motion" but that's definitely the apotheosis, hahaha, I'm going to have to watch all of this when I get a moment.

Thoroughly satisfying. Also now I want to make a folder of those textures like the screen print one you put on the Quench'd background.

Anonymous

oh yeah, random robot to mishandle food is kind of his thing. This kind of stuff always makes me wonder where a production draws the line. "We can build all these ketchup throwing machines and then set up lights and phantom cameras to capture the whole mess, or we can CG the crap out of this and use of half the worlds power for our render farm... and I'm sure everyone is going to assume its CG anyway"

Alex Doyi

I’m fairly sure there are laws that prevent food commercials from using CGI on their products. However, they are allowed to basically “paint” the food to make them look better (like makeup).

This is really instructive, thanks! Also, the menu descriptions are hilarious XD

This is majorly giving me vibes of that Justice music video for DVNO, which is one of the things that made me interested in 3d in the first place.

IanHubert

WHOA!!!! That's an amazing music video! I wonder if that was a whole team or just one person who'd made a bunch of logos who was like, "I got this". I love it

IanHubert

Oh man yeah!!!! Halftone patterns are super useful! That said I always lose my old ones and have to find new ones online, hahaha

Cavan Infante

Also if you like that DVNO one, you may appreciate the behind the scenes of how they originally did the old school HBO one that it references. Done in practical https://youtu.be/agS6ZXBrcng also reminds me of the back to the future ride fly through.

Hi Ian, what are your pc specs? Thx!
