I love the little reaction Shin gives when he realizes that, once again, he's leading a unit called Spearhead. This country may not purposely discriminate against the 86, but they still view them as just as disposable when push comes to shove. It's a small number of foreigners, who are so comfortable fighting that it unnerves everyone around them. So, whether they're aware of it or not, the Federacy has started to view the 86 the same way the Republic did. Freakishly talented but ultimately disposable soldiers. I don't believe the show ever says it directly, but other remaining members of Nordlicht squadron are all people called Vargus, basically an ethnicity of people treated as warrior slaves by the Empire before its fall. Interestingly, the Vargus were not given full citizenship by the Federacy. So they are, to some extent, also viewed as disposable. They do not get the same rights as a full-fledged citizen would, despite joining the military. To the people of the Federacy, this suicide mission does not risk a single citizen. It's not too different from the Republic's "humane drones".

The 5 of them have been fighting the war for at least 4 years up to the end of first cour. Shin was around 12 I think when he was sent to the camps. They were only in Spearhead for around 6 months until they were sent to die on their suicide mission. With the Federacy, I think their experience now is maybe 5, almost 6 years of experience with the juggernauts. And damn when all those "dog tags" hit the ground, fuck that shit was heavy. And to top it off with Lena stepping on spider-lilies? Terrance is right, this shit is basically like AOT lol
