This has always been my favorite aspect of Frieren, even more so than the concept of a story after the adventure is over. The idea that the demons are pure predators. They aren't particularly cruel, they're simply hunting us. They learned to speak solely to kill and eat us more efficiently. Just like how a human might mimic a bird call to get them to come close to a hunting blind. It's so creepy and has always stood out to me, in the years I've been reading the manga. This doesn't mean that demons can't have emotions or personalities, it just means that the driving force behind all their actions is that desire to eat humans. No matter what they say or do, their entire worldview is based on the idea that they are predators and humans are prey. I feel like that's so much creepier than any other interpretation of demons you see in anime. They aren't vicious or sadistic, yet they still can't be reasoned with as they have an entirely different set of rules for this world. That's horrifying.

Idk why many people struggle with the concept - but in MOST fantasy media the staff of a mage is NOT AT ALL like a gun. A staff is the tool used to "focus" a mages' raw power and/or to help finely tune/control it. The Mage themselves are either the outright source of, or conduit for that magical offensive power... A Mage without their staff is technically NEVER unarmed, they are just less accurate in their control of their powers/spells and is generally why types of anti-magic shackles/seals/barriers/enchantments/or some other form of nullification or counters exists in these stories, to balance the scales. In this world, it's apparently the same.
