I'm anime only, but the way they're presenting this is leading up to Lay being the reincarnation of Anos' swordsman subordinate. Anos remembering the promise with Kanon was just alluding to his anticipation of possibly meeting Kanon again at the Hero Academy. The way they timed that though was a little misleading at first, though.

I mean she’s on the cover the show for a reason and she was saying the reincarnated kanon is not who they were before maybe cause that person is female now but that’s just speculation

I'm pretty sure Lay is his reincarnated right hand man and the only reason Anos had a memory of the Hero because he also made a promise to the hero as he did to his subordinate. But then again I only know as much as you guys.
