Damn, I really liked the Polaris tricolor

Riemann Zeta-Jones

I can't believe what they did to my boy :(

Michael Fanning

My first thought looking at it was Pac-man, so yes definitely can't unsee the Laser-Loon(sic)

Omar Mtz

Polaris tricolor was my favorite

Katherine Rivera

Oh no, I’m so sorry that happened! I’m so glad that Lady Grey and the pups were all safe, that is very understandably scary. Do take care of yourselves!

Zion Klinger

Jeez Grey, I'm so sorry that happened to your wife and you. That's definitely something to be understandably shaken about. Best wishes to you both

Mac

Oh wow, I hope you're all okay!

Leafalie

I’m minnesotan and disappointed we didn’t get the tricolor, but I think this one is good and I’ll warm up to it. Definitely an improvement over the old one! I’m worried they’ll manage to mess it up somehow before it’s finalized. Please don’t add any words to it 🤞

Leo G.

It’s not bad. I can think of a slight improvement, borrowing from a bit of Scandinavian heritage, and would love to see Minnesota embrace a bit of their history? Make the star the gold (and go back the twinkle star) from Sweden’s flag, and go back to the blue/white/blue stripes. Alternatively, leave the star white and do a blue/gold/blue set of stripes?

Lynx88

Holy shit, Grey! That's so horrible what happened to your home. Thank goodness Lady Grey is OK. That is something to be very thankful for. Merry Christmas to both of you.

JayPeaBee

Is it sad that I got distracted by knowing the books on his right?

Casey S

I wasn't on board until the laser loon

Jon William Christian

I like if you turn it to the left you can see an M for MINNESOTA!!! "Most people didn't even notice the O."

Jordan K

TIL about LAZER LOON and I can’t go back

MaasNeotekPrototype

Merry Xmas, Grey. Hope you and the wife are well in the wake of such a potentially traumatic event. Good doggo.

Britain Morris

You really got me with the thumbnail! My heart nearly stopped!

Parker Bond

Is that The Lord of the Rings trilogy in your bookcase there?

Ellis Ritz

I hope this flag gets to live its best symbolic life. Face paint, mugs, front lawns, public service branding, state parks, all of it! Good luck Minnesota!

John Cunningham

I wasn't sold until I saw the Loon cartoon at the end

Parker Bond

I'm pretty sure I saw the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but wasn't sure about the other books?

Sam Nowaczewski

Glad you and yours are all ok. Clarification on the process. The Legislature can move to veto the design, but if they take no action the flag will fly on May 11. They only have so many days they are allowed to meet constitutionally so the flag would have to be really terrible in order to burn a day to vote on it

JayPeaBee

I’m surprised in all of these videos that CGPG hadn’t noticed that the star chosen in the final flag proposal is made of four copies of the letter “M”. Just look at the star two points at a time. M, M, M, M.

Catherine Germann

Love the experimental podcast of one. I would totally vote for more of these if they do not put a strain on your time. I'm so thankful that Mrs. Grey had big puppers with her to scare away the intruder(s)! What a fortunate happenstance. I hope that you both are able to recover from the scare as well as the inevitable paperwork involved with police and insurance. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you both!

Andrew

It's a Sioux star. Replacing a nod to the natives who lived in Minnesota with a nod to Swedish settlers is a bit on the nose, don't you think?

Bramble Fish

Thanks Grey! I always appreciate an emergency video drop. So glad everyone in your home is okay.

Stacey

All the treats and pets for the good boy who kept Lady Grey safe! I actually really like the 2 blue with the centre white stripe. A nice take! But there is really nothing wrong with this final* version, so thumbs up to Minnesota.

ein-veh

Oh no! Sympathy about the break in. That's horrid! Take care of yourself and Lady Grey. Good job doggo for protecting his people! Great video! Very enjoyable. I liked this format, and the meme at the end was hilarious. Thank you for sharing. :)

Judah Chambers

The continued Minnesota flag coverage has honestly been my favorite grey production of the year. Merry Christmas

Tara Berry

It’s so corporate blue. 😕

Liam Pender

I like the flag but I feel like its gone past the point where less is more and reached less is less

Lukas Armstrong

So sorry that happened to you and Lady Grey! I hope you guys are alright get a returned sense of security soon! As a non-resident, I still prefer Polaris tricolor, but this isn't bad. Especially when you consider laser loon and the vertical orientation. Hopefully, it doesn't get messed with

Malcolm Iggleden

Many thanks for all you do Grey, you are a source of great entertainment /education/commentary, - "podcast of 1" worked well - keep the format for similar uses I do hope you and Mrs Grey settle quickly after the scare! yay for proper doggo :). Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you both! -- and to all fellow enjoyers of your content :D

Parker Bond

It is a truth not universally acknowledged: that the final design change will take things 1 step too far and make it not as good as the second to last version. Really good flag compared to the old version though and I hope the grey house has a peaceful end of their year!

Falcrist

On topic: as a long time resident of Mankato, I'm happy with the new design, but the one with the three stripes is strictly superior. Off topic: please be aware that for those of us without a twitter account, it is no longer possible to follow you on that platform. We can't see your tweets unless linked directly to them. I would personally appreciate if people stopped using the platform altogether.

Parker Bond

That Makes it Much easier to paint on your face! 😈

Kraken Artificer

Do NOT apologize for the presence of dogs in your audio. Dogs are the best. Especially dogs that have protected you. Glad that all turned out OK

jaegr

Rules are for amateurs. It's when you break the rules that magic happens, like the best flag in the union; California.

Patrick Riegert

Good god. I'm sorry to hear you were burgled! That's insane

David Weintraub

I’m sure you know about J.J. McCullough’s criticism of your grading state flag video. He wanted to make a point that these rules aren’t laws, and that many of these “Seals on a Bed Sheets” you criticized shouldn’t necessarily be bad flags. He pointed out that New York (at least the city) and the State of Texas both have a strong and proud sense of place, but Texas has a “good flag” and New York has a “bad flag”. One thing he’s missing is that Texas’ flag is flown all over the place and no one in The Greatest City in the World (sorry London) flies the New York State Flag or even has the slightest idea what it looks like. Not only does everyone in Texas fly their flag, but the state’s nickname is derived from that flag, The Lone Star State. They even had a beer called Lone Star Beer which billed itself the National Beer of Texas. JJ pointed out that the Flag of British Columbia doesn’t follow any of the so called rules, but people are proud of it and fly it everywhere. Maybe it’s a good flag after all. I also believe there’s something to it too. The flags of Italy and Mexico are very similar. Both are tri-color red, white, and green. In Italy, you rarely see people fly that flag. It’s rumored that it was French Emperor Napoleon III that designed the flag. He copied the French tri-colors and replaced the blue with his favorite color, green. Mexico adds an eagle on a cactus killing a rattlesnake. (Unlike Iowa’s eagle, this one actually kicks ass.) The complex design should not be allowed. Plus, it’s from the state seal, so technically Mexico’s flag is a Seal on a Bed Sheet. However, Mexicans love their flag and it flies everywhere. It is a wonderful flag simply because it’s so beloved. The U.S. flag is also similar. It’s too complex. When first flown just outside of Boston, the British mistook it as the flag of surrender until their telescopes revealed it was red and white stripes. Vexillologically, it’s a bad design. The stripes are too small and too many stars. No one counts the stars to make sure there are fifty. It wouldn’t surprise if there were actually 49 or 53, but no one ever checked. If I was asked by George Washington to make a new flag for the country, I’d probably go with two blue vertical stripes and a red hand doing what I shall call “Our Salute to King George” in the center. It’s be the only flag that censors would have to blur out. Vexillologists would approve the clean simple design. Americans really adopted their flag during the Civil War and flew it everywhere. Its popularity never ceased. Meanwhile, the Confederate Flag never caught on in the South during the Civil War. After the Civil War, the American Flag could be broken apart and still be a symbol of America. A white star or stars on a blue field and some red and white stripes is all it takes. Uncle Sam is American even though it doesn’t display the flag. His hat is all you need. John Bull needs the Union Jack on his shirt. The US’s Air Force’s roundel tells you who’s dropping bomb on you. The British and French roundels are indistinguishable. It’ll take a while to see if Minnesotans take to their flag. If they do, it’ll be a great flag. If they don’t, then maybe they wasted their time. By the way, I still think that awesome loon on their new state seal should be on that flag. Now that the tricolor is a bicolor, there’s plenty of room.

Maggie Osterberg

Glad that you and Lady Grey are OK. Happy Christmas! And, as a former Minnesotan, let me say of the new flag, at least it's not funny-lookin, oh yaaaaaaaaah.

Anna V

(As a fellow childhood new yorker) You mentioning that a state flag could be something it's citizens fly or use as face paint, is something I both never considered and now sorely want.

spiderbruce026

Glad CGP Grey and Lady Grey are safe! I live in Minnesota and loved Polaris Tricolor. When I opened up the Star Tribune to see they had removed the tricolor element, I shouted in disgust. That being said, I eventually came to the same thought/question Grey expressed. If I had not seen the original design, would I like this flag? And honestly, I would. We Minnesotans are a somewhat odd bunch. A lot of regional pride, almost to a fault. You might even call us provincial. But I think Grey’s right. As soon as I saw the redesigned flags, I thought about all the ways I would display it. Except old wavy. Old wavy was terrible. All-in-all, I like this flag. It’s growing on me. I’ll probably fly it on my boat as I cruise around on the lakes.

David W (d20dave) (d_dave)

Similar thoughts. It’s perfectly fine, but maybe a bit boring. I don’t mind the color scheme at all but think maybe it looked better with the stripe. I also preferred the other star, but nbd. Seems like a fine compromise, and the final result is good. Let’s hope nothing is messed up in the process of getting this ratified.

David W (d20dave) (d_dave)

This is so true. When I’m editing photos, I always take whatever I did last and just scale it back a notch or two. Basically always the right decision,

David W (d20dave) (d_dave)

Also, very sorry about the burglary. Hope you’re all okay and are able to process it all in the aftermath. I know how violating it feels.

Parker Bond

I learned it the hard way building my own Lego ships as a kid. Inevitably I'd add one too many things to the ship.

Parker Bond

To paraphrase xkcd 1238: rules are like magic spells. If you never understand them, then not following them means nothing.

William Jackson

I love this video - Grey thank you! Wishing 2024 to be a better year for everyone but especially for you and yours.

Parker Bond

Most of the others look like they could just be binders for storing paperwork or maybe journals.

Elizabeth Henson

One thing about a flag being symmetrical is you cannot easily turn it upside down as a signal of distress. Applies more to the US flag but something to consider.

Tyler Fincher

Thank you for the videos! I have been subscribed to your YouTube channel for quite a while but it is the flag content that turned me into a Patreon supporter. I submitted flag designs to the

DruidicDM

You'd be surprised how many Minnesotans absolutely hate the new flag. (It's all over my FB) I don't like the bicolor and kinda wish they would have stuck with the Tri but I'm not on the committee so *shrug*

Rosuav

COULD someone paint this on their face? I'd like to see a counter-example to that.

Tyler Fincher

Thank you for the videos! I have been subscribed to your YouTube channel for quite a while, but it is the flag content that turned me into a Patreon supporter. As a Minnesotan, I submitted my flag designs to the commission along with several members of my family. I was glad to be a part of the discussion an happy to see my design received one vote from a commissioner on the first round of voting. My wife has no interest in flag updates, so it is a relief to have someone else that cares as deeply as I do. The proposed design isn’t my favorite design either, but I will be proud to fly this flag and as you have said if could have been way worse. Thank you for all your content but specifically your flag content! Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Kallin

Good Maude, sorry to hear about the frightening burglary! The last video sold me on Polaris Tricolor, so I was a little iffy on the changes to it, but I’ve come around and think this is a top-2 flag (the other being New Mexico’s). Two things that helped were seeing the photo of it as a physical flag and seeing it next to Polaris Tricolor. The simplicity improves it and I like that they lightened the dark blue to make it less drab. I think it’s really good, and as someone from a “seal-on-blue” state I am jealous (even tho I think state flags aren’t very important). The designer of Polaris Tricolor (or someone claiming to be them) says they think the new version is better: https://www.reddit.com/r/Minneapolis/comments/18m7w7x/comment/ke32nrz/

Serina G

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Grey!

Ruth Danielson

omg, I'm so glad Lady Grey is safe! Good puppy! And wishing you calm to your nervous system after all that. It's rough to get robbed from your home.

Ultraczar

Gotta say Laser Loon sold it for me. Being from MN, this is a nice flag.

Daniel

much love from the news too https://www.cbsnews.com/minnesota/news/minnesota-state-flag-finalists-cgp-grey-youtube/

Matthew Ruderman

I'm glad to hear the Lady Grey is doing well. As a Minnesota, they went too simple.

Terry Steiner

Half of the articles I have read include references to your videos. I also didn't realize they used the Sioux star but tilted 45⁰.

Kevin C

Hey…the original designer of the Polaris Tri-Color came onto Reddit and chimed in on the changes made to his design. Others felt they would be upset, but he was happy. It was a nice read! https://www.reddit.com/r/Minneapolis/s/3dTUuzMMBz

Anonymous

Hope they add the white stripe in the middle, but this is totally fine, especially vertical. Also like how it kinda looks like Minnesota with the shape.

Ethan Zmuda

tilted 22.5° (tilted 45° would have no effect due to its symmetry)

Sasha

Great video! And I'm very glad you and your wife are doing okay. Have a nice christmas and a good start into 2024!

Cory Johnson

Your state flags video has converted several friends to the cause of changing our flag. So I thank you for that! I’m glad to hear that you’re ok. But, the discourse on the flag change now is being wrapped up in another culture war issue. I’m seeing so many locals on Facebook posting a meme saying “This is my flag, it always has been and always will be”. The meme ironically contains the pre-1983 Minnesota flag. Our flag should have been changed because it was terrible separate from the seal being racist. Weirdly the new seal has viewed overwhelmingly positively, to the point where a lot of people support putting the new seal on a blue sheet. Also, did you hear any of the comments comparing the tricolor to regional flags of Somalia?

Chris Waldrip

…as long as they don’t replace the star with any seal, it’ll be fine. 😝

MeldaSilas

"I want people to love their flags" he says after dismissing the Flag of Milwaukee, a flag people LOVE and FLY despite our city being unwilling to officially adopt it. :)

Jared Wasserman

Sadly, many folks are trying to tie the new flag to the recent Somali refugees that were resettled in Minnesota.

Ross Olson

I’m concerned that Grey is missing an entire syllable when pronouncing Vexillology.

Ross Olson

There is also a strong ‘we’re kinda copying Texas’ vibe to the flag.

Wash__

Glad you and yours are safe. Hope your doggy got extra treats for the save. Wishing you guys a happy holiday :)

MeldaSilas

You're welcome! It was name dropped on HI and then summarily dismissed because it's a non official flag, but we Milwaukeeans still cherish it.

Billy Jarvis

It looks like a candy cane

Michael Braedley

Personally, I would have taken that as a compliment; those Somali flags are pretty good.

Andrew Bethards

I always thought the truth thing was a British element, glad to know that is only a Love Actually thing.

MidnaMajora

I can't believe you got robbed while you were taking the dog out. That's awful. Glad you're all okay.

Melnoli

I'm so glad you're both okay! Please pet the puppy for us, and thank you for sharing critical flag news

Leo G.

Fair point on the star. My argument there was purely a taste thing and I wasn’t aware it was a native thing, which is worth keeping. But I would argue that the Scandinavian population (it’s not JUST Swedish immigrants, but the pale blue is also featured in the Swedish flag so…) is as much a part of the culture and also deserves recognition?

Daniel Wippert

Damn!! not only did you get robbed🔫 in real life but you also got robbed by this flag pick.... in all seriousness I'm glad that no one got injured😎👊

Hans Cathcart

What really matters is what will this flag look like on the skirt of little Ms. Minnesota.

Heathen

A couple quick corrections: a few times Grey has said 'flag referendum,' but that's not what this is. Minnesota is not a referendum state, all we can vote on is candidates and constitutional amendments, so that's not a valid route for anything around this flag / seal process to go. Some detractors in the committee have brought up that they want the people to vote on it, but there's no constitutional way for that to happen so they are just grandstanding to undermine the process.

Heathen

Additionally, there is no further action that the legislature needs to do for this flag and seal to become official. The bill signed last year was effectively pre-approving the new flag and seal. The legislature *could* step in to stop it from automatically becoming official in May, but just based on the political make-up of the legislature and the governor's office, it's unlikely that will gain enough traction to get to a vote.

Heathen

The part that could be challenged in the courts is all relating to the spot on the seal where the slogan was in the original design and also the lack of a date shown. I think the redesign committee is actually meeting one last time next week to potentially address some of those items. Basically there are some regulations that may require us to have our state's founding date or year on the seal and it was left off the design as currently shown in sensitivity for some atrocities against Native Americans that also occurred in 1858, so that could be added back on. Additionally the bill creating the committee stipulated that design elements that favored only one group could not be used, so putting the Dakota name for the state on the seal is probably in violation of that (the Ojibwe representative on the committee objected to its inclusion). I'd like to see the state motto L'Étoile du Nord on there (it's the only state motto in French), as shown in the original design, but knowing this committee, they'll probably just get rid of all words from that spot of the seal. Overall B+ job and I'm happy with the seal and flag

Matthew Goodyear

I’m so sorry you got robbed, stay safe man. I’m glad nobody got hurt. Hope you and the lady grey are ok. It hits hard to have someone invade your space.

rielith

As a happy MN resident, I subscribed just to watch this, and I'm intrigued by your thoughts that it's a bit more boring than it could have been. Overall, I'm delighted at the new flag design, as exactly like you said, it's a flag one can not only paint easily but that abides (at least mostly, I haven't read them) by NAVA guidelines. As I am now, I personally would have preferred the more muted dark blue compared to the more saturated variation, but I'm willing to bet I'll warm to the new colors over time. Honestly the largest sticking point for me on the new flag is the star being simplified into the evenly 8-pointed version as opposed to the more twinkle-y / compass-rose-esque version. At the end of it all, I'm delighted at the new flag and can't wait to hang it in my office as part of my webcam backdrop. It's a good flag, definitely a solid A-tier for me, and that's my overall sentiment. Glad you're all okay, getting robbed can be a nightmare and a half. I appreciate the work of you and the rest of Grey Industries. Take care and Merry Christmas / Happy Holidays.

Jake Fitch

This version of the star reminds me of a snowflake which seems appropriate for Minnesota.

The_Bradinator

You should make the flag-skirt version vertical, and cut out the light blue, it would look perfect!

The_Bradinator

that laser-loon meme you showed at the end also made me see a fish in the flag! I know that wasn't intentional (most likely) but I like that!

theAkornTree

The laser-kiwi welcomes their cousin, the laser-loon!

enchantedsleeper

I do like this design a lot more after seeing it hung vertically! But I do think the balance of colour just looks a bit odd normally and it could benefit from having a middle stripe of some kind. Thank you for covering this so assiduously for us and especially through some frightening home events!! I'm glad you and Lady Grey are unharmed and I wish you some peace and a chance to recover over the festive season <3

Sebastian Mankowski

Merry Christmas Grey and thank you for the holiday videos and end of year cheer! At minute 13:08 you make a comment about how "Love Actually tried to rebrand christmas as having this truth element that no one's ever picked up and has never been present before", and coincidentally a day after watching this video I was at the Hancock Shaker Village in western Mass and came across this quote from the Shaker book of 'Millenial Laws of 1845': "As the signal by which all true followers of Christ are known, is unfeigned and unalloyed love to each other, the order of God requires that on Christmas day Believers should make perfect reconciliation, one with another; and leave all grudges, hard feelings, and disaffections, one towards another, externally behind on this day; and to forgive as we would be forgiven; and nothing which is this day settled, or which has been settled previous to this, may hereafter be brought against another." While this doesn't explicitly mention 'telling the truth', the "unfeigned and unalloyed love to each other" piece reads to me as the same sentiment. So I'd argue that at least the Shakers back in 1845 associated Christmas with telling the truth and being honest to each other! Thought it was interesting and timely :) Here are links to a copy of the Millenial Laws I found: https://www.shakermuseum.us/archive?id=177 https://shaker.qi-cms.com/media/_file/general/vol-049.pdf And the picture I took from the Shaker Village: https://photos.app.goo.gl/Ymj7kUGBtP2JZZZ16

Marie Tessier aka OrigamiMarie

I mean, "it could have been worse" might as well be the Minnesota State motto (not to slander my favorite and home state; it's just a quintessential low-key praise phrase here). So a flag that elevates the situation into the top tertile and elicits this phrase is actually pretty good.

Marie Tessier aka OrigamiMarie

The comment editing interface ate my edit, so here's a second comment. I liked the previous star as a representation of a star in the sky. But I like this star for other reasons. * This star is the most commonly found star in quilts, which are definitely still a thing here. * There is a Christmas craft that I grew up calling a Swedish Star, but seems to be more commonly called a German Star (I suspect it experienced a little rebranding in the early 20th century). If you search for it, I'm referring to the one with eight flat points and eight 3D points, and its profile looks like this flag's star. They're traditionally folded from paper strips, hung on thread, and dipped in hot paraffin to make a relatively sturdy star. Then hang them on a tree or in a window. I even made an instructional YouTube video for how to make a Swedish Star.

Terry Steiner

I like the fact that the star is actually the Sioux star (used on other candidate flag) just rotated 22.5°.

Judah Goddard

im sorry you went through that grey
