Whenever I write these two sniping at each other, I always end up reading it aloud as I go.

Edit: Updated to clarify timing of events. This chapter is happening at the same time as the last one, a little bit before the fight.

Quicky. Thanks!

Good chap! But frankly, fuck Recce.

Conor McGroarty

Learning how to seize the seat of the Administrator, one manual sense and (non system) skill at a time. Assuming El was the first awakened, he must have been a real super genius even considering he was likely working with the knowledge of predecessors to shorten the toil. Assuming of course that El wasn’t already a deity (maybe an awakened of another world then) and came to this world (or made it from scratch) to bestow the power of essence, mana and stuff onto it for the natives to figure out.

It's only the end of the world, no big deal.

She is an old granny renting space in Rain’s head with her knowledge and skill. Old people tend to be grumpy for one reason or another, just look at Staavo. While she is a copy of Warden Vatreece, the existence of the Maelstrom her original caused in her final battle with Fecht has accelerated System collapse to be certain. Quite the failure as her last act. Thankfully her second to last action of leaving a copy in Rain’s head worked out more than she considered possible.

Thanks for the chapter.

Just the world ending, nbd. Thanks!

Feels like the word count has been shrinking in recent chapters.

To me it seems much more likely he was (one of) the best from a long tradition of manual cultivation that had step by step uncovered true runes and other cultivation tools.

WannaBeATree

Did Reeces previous experiments sound like basic dmg auras to anyone? It does to me.

I like the direction this story is heading. There is an impending system collapse and only one group that can offer alternatives to its convivences. If ascension wasn't being noticed before, they will be when they are the only people who can offer stable lighting. The world's existing hierarchies seem to be built almost entirely around the strict numerical ranking provided by the system. If that system is threatened, the people at the top will be willing to burn the world to get it back. Ascension will look like too valuable a tool be left free. Even the unawakened will join the fun. There is probably no shortage of angry unleveleds who'll try and recruit a seemingly sympathetic organization into their plans for bloody revolution. Pipe bombs are a lot more politically motivating when the damage limit isn't so reliable. And when rain does start mucking about in the system, he'll be faced with a question. Should he really keep the system as it is? Who is he to decide the shape of a structure that will impact millions of lives?

What Chapter was the System messag in or was it never shown?

Last chapter. The warning message. All it said was warning.

You don't think old people can be nice, or at least not annoying, and your evidence for that is the other annoying asshole old person in this story? The fact that this author has recycled the same character twice is all the confirmation you need that it can't be done any other way?

Person8

Hmm, I feel like we're missing a tiny bit at the end of the chapter where Rain has to shoo Reece out of the secure sector with his skills. Otherwise it almost reads as if he might leave her there with access.

St Chef

There could have been a whole team that designed and created the system and only 1 person/god remembered for that achievement.

I still want a list of possible evolutions for classes. Even just how an uncommon bronze class might unlock different options at silver. Mostly I want to see the different prereqs and class bonuses

In Chapter 181: Creation, we have Rain doing the wedding ceremony for Jamus and it requires impersonating the gods. It gives some info on the theology such as this excerpt: ‘Rain spoke as he took the offered scarf, trading it for his spear. “I thank you, Karum, for forging this bond as you once forged the system from my power and according to my will.” ‘Karum’ nodded, then retreated silently with the spear, returning to his position at the side of the hall. Rain hid another grimace. The god got treated like a damn lackey in the mythology, all of his works—the system included—merely done at El’s direction and with El’s power.’ Now assuming El isn’t just a glory hog (as well being a mortal at one point), my interpretation is that El was the first awakened to reach Ascension and for such a feat of pioneering a path to divinity (with past information providing foundation), essence and such received the adjective of “El’s power” and such (a form of respect and deference given, whether El demanded it or not is unknown). Karum could have been a student and/or friend who ascended afterwards but due to his crafting expertise was better suited to making the original System and was hired by El for it. Edit: Later Ellish dogma and historical rewrite could have lowered Karum’s importance to a lackey when El may or may not have treated him like one, end edit So the System was built, likely focusing on long-term stability and protection against power misuse (no breaking the damage limit for the OG System). But Majistraal came along and most likely lowered System protections in favor of a quicker path to power (ironically this probably made attaining divinity even harder since people didn’t know what to do manually at platinum, or if they did know they missed out on much practice from earlier tiers). Perhaps the Majistraal also censored knowledge of manual cultivation so no outsider could be a threat to their new System by hiding out and one day showing up a god. Now the world is still paying the price for having a deviant System that gives power too fast, too easily and has no maintenance workers or Admin. Edit: excerpt from 181: ‘The third generation of gods was said to have risen from humanity after Rekzakurax broke El’s order, but before the rise of the Majistraal.’ Even considering this story is based off much historical whitewashing, it is interesting. It might imply that the original system hoarded the chance to attain divinity (stopping at second generation of deities), blocking opportunity in which case Rekzakurax is a liberator instead of prick ruining a good thing and leaving a vacuum for the Majistraal to mess things up even more. Could also be that El and the second generation may or may have blocked access to divinity for a good reason, like maybe the world can only take such a burden of Ascension every now and then. Could also be a test so not just any lucky prick becomes a god and they have to work for it. So much info in chapter 181 even with historical drift.

Enkelados

I have the completely opposite idea. There were never manual or natural mages or cultivators. Mana health and everything was discovered and explored via particle accelerators and radio telescopes. And machines were built, that built the machines that built the machines. All so in the end an easy to use user interface was created for people to harness the energy their souls generate, so their civilization could ascend and leave this plane behind. What was left were people unable to do it and those unwilling and those combined weren't able to keep things running and slowly devolved to a fantasy medieval technology level. Karum, El etc are probably either important scientists/leaders or actually companies or agencies that got personfied over the aeons. Cia the goddess of sleep who watches our dreams or brothers Warners the gods of entertainment.

Conor McGroarty

Ancient technological civilization discovering essence and stuff is an interesting viewpoint. Though I do wonder about the origin of essence, specifically whether it exists on Earth but no one has ever discovered it? Was it artificially created, either by accident or horrifically immoral experiments used to discover the existence of the soul? Or has it existed since the beginning and was only later discovered? Could also be a unique feature of some kind of creator deity leaving their own mark on creation. Well any definitive answer shall come later

Now here's the big question is rain gonna actually sense it himself or make a machine for it. Could go either way

can we at least get a dossier on what a focus is and the different kinds of enchantments?

2023-12-23 02:59:11 I'm sad that raising your level cap without killing monsters is possible because I want more monster-killing action. Delve is the name of this fiction after all.

I'd also accept demographics on the world's awakened. How many awakened each country has, of each of low, mid high bronze silver, etc

abowden

You are still going to see that, because it is implied to be even more dangerous than getting a blue, depending on circumstance. I can see rain doing it, perhaps Tallheart and maybe Amelia too, but ALL of the others? Forget it. It might even be something exclusive to the soul savants (pretty much just rain, who Granny still seemed reluctant to teach)

Neneera

If you can use the skill once before it stop working then what about passives? Can you keep them on after getting it from unity?
