Hey guys!!

So I figured I'd pick your brains first. I'm thiiiiiinking about doing vlogmas or making a video every day of December (leading up to Christmas Day). Or maybe I could do a "12 Days of" type thing for the month where it's a video every OTHER day?

Please let me know if there's any sort of video TOPIC you'd like to see, any kind of experiment I could do that you'd be interested in, etc.

This is still in the initial planning stages so if I decide I'm too crazy [true, but...] and can't do it, I'll still be sure to work through the list y'all want, just at a slightly less insane pace.

THANKS, Y'ALL!

Yess please a video every day will be sooo great

Do it! Suggestions for videos: how to survive Christmas surrounded by non writers, Christmas presents for writers, Christmas books, Christmas cookies for the puppies (dog friendly)

Experiment ideas - How about a Live Sprintathon? Maybe Pomodoro-style so 25on/5off/25on/5off/25on/25off and repeat as long as you possibly can and see how many words you get.

I would say don’t put pressure on yourself to do it! Another YouTuber I follow vlogged every day in October, and by the end they seemed burnt out and a little frustrated that views per video had gone down (reading between the lines—they talked about the algorithm). As a subscriber, I’m just not able to watch all the vlogs from all the content creators I follow.

Experiment ideas - Try zero draft an entire book within 10 days?

Elizabeth Falk

Sorry about this one, but LOLOLOLOLOL this would make a great vlog or series.

Making a video everyday is a lot for you to do, so don't feel like you have to . But some vlogs would be fun!

katecavanaugh

Definitely!! My plan/hope is to bulk film most videos during November but I don't think I'll announce anything anywhere else in case I DO decide it's way too much for me to handle bahaha. (And that's an excellent point about there being an overload of videos and it too hard to catch them all. I feel similarly.)

Amy Richardson

Vlogmas would be amazing, but definitely don't burn yourself out if you can't manage a video a day! Even a few vlogs would be great. Some ideas: Read and review a cheesy Christmas romance from a fun angle, whatever that might be. There's a million of them out there, I get almost daily alerts for free ones from BookBub. Also, maybe drafting your own Hallmark movie outline! There are some interesting articles from recent years about the formula used for them (there must be snow, there must be a kiss but not until later in the movie, etc).

The holidays are always super busy for me & I'm currently living with family. I'd love to see a video on how to fit writing into your schedule when days become unpredictable. Also Christmas presents for writers would be cool! Maybe planning New Year's Resolutions for writing goals too.

Joey Cron

A gift guide for what to get writers for Christmas would be cool. Kind of like those nano survival kits

Anonymous

Maybe a Writemas where you write haha

It would be cool to see you breakdown a book by Save the Cat beats or analyze the plotting of a novel by a few different plotting methods. I love writing experiment videos too.

Sarah Cahill

I love the idea of a ‘12 days of Christmas,’ type thing, and revisit and redo past experiments / videos. Retry some things you’ve hated in the past, rewrite an old piece of work.

Elizabeth Falk

I loved the Hallmark wheel experiment. That was hilarious. Anything that involves the Hallmark formula / movies is likely to be popular this year, We are all looking for an escape from 2020.

Or maybe do some "I tried writing like"' but go super old school with them? Twain, Poe, Hemingway? lol Here's an article that may have some inspiration. https://medium.com/the-mission/the-daily-routine-of-20-famous-writers-and-how-you-can-use-them-to-succeed-1603f52fbb77

Or Experiment with some brand new productivity strategies?

Stephanie Faye Lilienthal

Well. *I* would enjoy a new video every single day, but such a project is so darn exhausting ... I don’t want you to burn out, Kate. And a vlog every single day seems like a good way to do that, unfortunately 😕 Maybe if someone else did the editing, things would be different, but as is, I‘d prefer the 12 days of Christmas, for mental health’s sake ☺️ And I‘d enjoy Christmas themed videos. Like, do you know any Christmas novels that have food in them? Maybe try bake / cook them? Your top 5 Christmas novels / Hallmark Christmas Movies / General your fav Christmas Movies. Maybe another round of Hallmark Story Generator but now it‘s all Christmas-themed? Vlog → Decorating the Christmas Tree with Duke, Buffy & Queen Zelda ♥ A video about your thoughts about 2020 as a wrap up and plans for 2021 Maybe write a interactive Christmas shortstory and your followers decide what happens next (maybe vote through Insta) ☺️

In Googling for more "I tried writing like" vintage inspiration, I found the following:

Victor Hugo "Victor Hugo was known to remove his clothing and hand it to a servant to hide. In doing so, Hugo was unable to leave the house until he had finished writing."

BethIsWriting

Write a modern take on The 12 Days of Christmas. Cooking with a Christmas Classic. NaNoWriMo recovery.

Can you do like a 6 or 12 hour write a thon where you do sets of pomadoro’s with a half hour gap between eave set instead of just a straight sprint to see how that affects you productivity please I think that will be interesting to she the difference between othe write a thon’s where you just continually write for the 6 or 12 without any structure

I agree with all the comments about putting your health & mental health first. I'd much rather have videos from Happy Healthy Kate than Sad Burnt-Out Kate. That being said, I would also like to second (third?) Elizabeth's idea about the Hallmark formula. Maybe a string of Christmas novellas or Christmas short stories that follow the formula? That would be a fun experiment/series. I would also love to see a Cooking with Classics or a Holiday Recipe video where you try to make Starbucks holiday drinks at home. That would be great because COFFEE but also because COFFEE and COFFEE, lol. I LOVE videos that are like, "60 pieces of writing advice in 6 minutes" or something ridiculously fast. It seems silly but I find that the rewatchability is great on my end. 'Cause every time I watch it, I catch something new. But also because it usually yields high energy, happy vibes and I'm all about that. A holiday "write-with-me" video would be interesting. But not, like, a live-write in. Just a filmed writing sprint that's either got music or typing in the background. Sometimes I like watching live write-ins play in the background but the talking can be really distracting. OH! Or a writer ASMR video would be interesting: typing sounds, coffee making sounds, pages turning, etc.

maybe a day/week where you do a short retelling of a famous Christmas or holiday story?? like a Christmas carol, nutcracker, etc, or do a really random set of parameters and pick them out of a hat to create a really unexpected holiday story (like Christmas story mad libs)

Anonymous

I would love a video from you every day in December! Just make sure you’re taking care of yourself first!! Some ideas: Peppermint is supposed to boost focus, perfect time for experiment?? I bet there is a bot that writes hallmark Christmas movies that would be fun to analyze/read aloud Make yourself an advent calendar with writer prompts or little goodies???

Anonymous

Modernize Christmas stories writing prompts. Like being stuck in the VR and experiencing Christmas everyday. Or, a Christmas Carole done through video links or different AI’s hijacking your technology. Or take “A Christmas Story” and set it on a space ship. What would be the spinning top, BB gun, or gravy boat? Or, what if Santa is actually a woman and we misinterpreted the lore? She originated as St. Nihcole (h dropped off later). Oh the possibilities. Oooo, what if reindeer we’re replaced with high-tech, electric powered drones??? What if Santa was replaced by drones? I’ll let someone else comment now.

Elizabeth Falk

Oh!!! I am so here for the writing ASMR video with typing and coffee making sounds. Love this!!

Anonymous

I would definitely love lots of videos in December, though I know that's a lot of work. Some Christmasy writing experiments could be cool like something with the 12 days of Christmas or something like that. I'm sure other people have much better ideas than I do. I'm just here to say that I am very excited for this and would watch each and every video no matter how many you make

Anonymous

Honestly, I would love to have a new video every day leading up to Christmas. That's my favorite time of the year and you are one of my favorite creators. It would make my year to have you upload a video a day leading up to Christmas.

Anonymous

I love the idea of the 12 days of Christmas leading up the 25th and having some sort of theme. You could honestly do something actually related to the song lyrics, like cooking something related or writing shorts stories that include five golden rings, four calling birds, three french hens, etc. Absurdity encouraged!

katecavanaugh

OMG that would be hysterical!!! I'm going to brainstorm on this and, if I can do it, this would be so fun.

Ashley Pedigo

You could do a 2020 wrap up video, talk about goals for 2021, do another hallmark movie challenge, some sort of Christmas writing challenge? I also feel like 12 days is way kinder to yourself than all 25!! Don’t get burnt out!

Alvin Fraser

While I would welcome the 12 or 24 videos in December (as, I'm sure, the general public would) I would prefer you pace yourself. I understand how much work goes into editing even a relatively short vlog. (Just my two cents.)

Charlotte Armstrong

Ooh this would be awesome!! I'm planning to do vlogmas this year! Already working on prefilming a few things to make it a little less chaotic! Topics wise hmm maybe something like "writing short stores based off Christmas carols" Or writing a short story that goes through what Christmas is like in the world of one of your books/how your characters celebrate (like just for fun assuming it's not actually something in the book already), if there is no Christmas what is an equivalent holiday that they celebrate and what is the mythology behind it?

I'm really torn about your vlogmas idea, because on the one hand it would burn you out and I hate that thought, but on the other its a really great way to put your content out there in a way that would maybe make the YouTube algorithm look more kindly upon you and it could be a way to expand your patreon base and from a purely business stand point that would be better for you in the long run... Are there any writing projects you can sort of put on the back burner while you do this? Would your query journey be a part of this vlogmas? Because that could be something and it hasn't been explored much on YouTube, but might be a little too close to home...

Anonymous

YES THAT WOULD BE AMAZING!

Anonymous

Both sound great, but vlogmas can be a burn out. Either way, we’ll be getting new content and I’m happy for that!

Anonymous

I think a 12 days of something would be really neat! I really enjoy watching your daily vlogs. Maybe it would be fun to discuss some new topics you've never touched on before or take a chance to try some new things? Whatever the topic is, it'll be joy to watch.

Anonymous

The 12 days option sounds great. Lots of videos for us but without the huge chunk of time daily videos would take out of your December. And idk if it would be feasible, but maybe you could do some kind of writer's advent calendar? Like people submit ideas for writing prompts and you pick 12 to read out in the videos?

Anonymous

12 days sounds like a great idea. Burnout is best to avoid.

Anonymous

Could you do an advent calendar thing? Like you have 12 things and randomly do one each day (pull it from the randomly distributed advent etc). Say the morning of or the night before you choose which author you will write like, (or pull from a Santa hat etc) and then you have to switch gears a bit quickly which could be entertaining. Especially if the Christmas authors idea (Ie maybe Dickens routine while writing A Christmas Carol (or routine in general but we can pretend)

Juniper Woodbury

Since you are an idea wizard, it could be fun to see you brainstorm 12 (or however many you decide) new book ideas or premises or settings or characters!

Anonymous

If it's too wild on your own, maybe it could be an authortuber vlogmas? With streams and collabs and such? Also it might be fun to do a secret Santa with short stories. Like, you get to pick the genre, age category, a setting, and a theme/conflict, and then your secret Santa writes it?

Anonymous

The 12 days would probably be best. Many of the other Youtubers that do Vlogmas say it is very stressful given, the time of year, to get a video up daily.

Anonymous

Both are so fun! Do what you feel like doing <3

Regina Duke

Gosh, didn't you just do a video about the onset of burnout? :) I would love to see new Kates every day, but I would like you to survive the month. LOL How about twice a week? Thinking of your health. <3

Anonymous

I like the '12 days of' idea so you don't overwork yourself, december should be a month of chill after what has been 2020. Maybe like an advent calander there could be a focus a day; one day could be a livestream, another could be a 'write anything day', another could be a christmas short story prompt, another could be a special baked good day... a small focus each video that could get us all into the comfy holiday writing mood each of the 12 days.

katecavanaugh

BAHAHA yes I did! You are all making very valid points! Thank you for the reminder! :)

Alex Thorn

I think a video on people's favourite lines they've written and/or favourite lines from fiction could be fun! Also 12 days sound more doable! Don't burn yourself out!

Alex Thorn

ANOTHER IDEA!! A video where people send in their made up fantasy names and you try to pronounce them xD idk why, but this sounds hilarious to me
