Commentary

The obvious counter to the previous comic was "you can lose a game".

MY counter is "you ever played the games I'm parodying?" I can't even remember what happens when you die in a Fable game. I'm not sure I've ever seen it happen, and I've beaten the first three games, and played the first two through multiple times.

The third one I played all the way through once. The third one, um... It... It made some choices... But I did beat it!

What I am sure of is that the games had items called Resurrection Phials that would instantly fix you up if you reached 0 HP, and you could just buy them short of playing a hard mode in a remaster of the first game, so... Yeah.

That's the inspiration I'm working from, here. We're not parodying Dark Souls. Or world 8 of Super Mario Bros, which was a nightmarish nightmare.

I still see the hammers.

Problem with video games Vs Any other story. Video games do not have room for more than 1 hero, the player character. As any game which focuses on other hero’s, takes away from the PC character. Of course, this is only a problem in this specific type of game where you play one character. Games where you control more than one unit, RST, RPGs, well written hack and slash games with a team Of AI characters (Xenoblade Chronicles X comes to mind), can certainly deal with the multi hero deal. But not the type of game parodied here.

I recently played a game that had bad endings, and I didn't know it had them. I got one by accident. It utterly wrecked me and I couldn't even play the game again for a few days. So I'm hoping Susan really thinks about what she's doing before she risks not getting the happy ending.

I'm pretty sure I've played games similar to this where there were a band of completely automated NPCs that the player gathered and actually followed the player around on story bits that weren't the final battle. This sort of game was source material for my reply on an earlier episode of this comic where I talked about other ways that the automated NPCs could go, depending on your perspective, either horribly wrong or horribly right. I do not remember which game featured one of those NPCs casually walking through an enemy encampment, because they'd been set to wait for me until I walked within a certain proximity, and I did so accidentally on the other side of that encampment... and it wasn't an issue because the enemy characters just didn't care about my NPC followers, unless they saw they were with me. Despite the game lore dripping with commentary to the contrary. But whatever game it was, it was a riot. That was not the only absurd situation from that game, but it was a memorable one (probably mostly because I expected to go into a giant encounter I was totally unprepared for, and then didn't get it.) There was sort of room for some heroics in that game by those NPCs. Specifically, each one had several hard coded moments in which they absolutely shined. That said, at the end of the day, there was no room for them to get credit for going above and beyond. They had carefully scripted glory and nothing else. To be fair, the player character also had carefully scripted glory and nothing else, it was just a fair amount more than said other characters. If I recall correctly, to the extent they got a happily ever after, it was *with* the player character (not necessarily as a romantic companion, but if they weren't a romantic companion, they didn't get one of their own.)
