I don't like that the first panel feels a bit redundant, but given the "science" they were up to, showing much more than that would've been a bit much o_o;;;

Commentary

Wait a minute.

This ISN'T fan fiction written by one of the characters in the comic itself?! How can this...

Wait. If a character in the comic writes fiction about other characters in the comic, is that fan fiction, or is that just them weirdly writing stuff about their friends?

...

Note to self: Have someone do that in the future, but change the character names so it's apparent they don't realize what they're doing and/or are trying to hide it.

On one hand, I'm glad no one was actually cheating on anyone, even if this isn't canon. On the other hand, that was a horrible tease and I'm sure some people now want to throw things at you. :p

egscomics

I went with what I felt gave people the most out of this: An outcome that could be canon while still implying intense attraction between Tedd and Elliot, and the showing of smooches.

Connie Edogawa

....yeah, ok, I can live with this. though a small part of me is hoping that they both talk about this at some point. even if nothing comes of it, they both deserve to know they weren't the only one thinking about it.

gaybunny

oh yeah, they should talk to them and make sure everyone's okay with a poly relationship and under what terms. *Then* they can deal with these unresolved feelings. I'm sure this is exactly what's going to happen next.

OftenSane

Honestly, I'm really impressed how this got handled. Way more rewarding and respectful of the readers than some, "it was all a dream" gimmick.

OftenSane

And frankly it's nice to see a depiction of reasonable attraction between people, friends at that, without them being destined as one-true-loves.

I think in-universe fiction could count as "fanfiction" rather than just creepy fantasies if and only if it was about a character's in-universe persona, rather than the person themself; kind of like how it would just be fanfiction to make up your own stories about Iron Man from the MCU, but weird to write fiction about Robert Downey Jr. The most obvious candidate is Cheerleadra, but at a stretch it could maybe also work for ace-detectives Ellen and Nanase, or even internet-movie-critics Elliot and Susan.

coredumperror

How could you. How COULD you?! They were meant to smooch for REAL! I am sad now.

coredumperror

YES! Grace would obviously be down for it. Ashley... I'm not sure. Maybe if Tedd transformed her into a preferred form, first.

coredumperror

> Way more rewarding and respectful of the readers than some, "it was all a dream" gimmick. But that's exactly what it was!

It wasn't _all_ a dream. Just the kiss, and that was a thing they were both imagining.

Given how beneficial it was when these characters learned about things like being trans and nonbinary, I can only hope they will soon discover the wonders of being poly.

Also, Dan's commentary makes me think of Bob's Burgers, and Tina's "Erotic Friend Fiction." :-D

Andrea Andrew

Who’s Elliot’s girlfriend, Dan? Susan or Ashley? Maybe both?🤣😁😎

Anonymous

Well, according to Isabella from Dragon Age 2, that would be 'friend-fiction.'

Anonymous

I can say that I 100% did not see this coming, but I love the fact that the thought balloon is coming from BOTH of them.

Daryl Sawyer

Here comes Grace with the cannon!

coredumperror

Yes, that is the sole saving grace for this debacle of a followup to the last page. :)

Elliot: "Hey Tedd?" Tedd: "Yeah?" Elliot: "Think we could have a magical pizza party here this weekend?" Tedd: "... sure Elliot, that'd be... nice."
