"There! I applied the mental effects of lifeguard!"

"What? No, I meant the mental effects of Pet Kitty, the PHYSICAL effects of Lifeguard, and the bikini outfit from Furry without the furriness."

"..."

"Was that not clear?"

Thank goodness. This made like three pages of Susan fretting and getting talked through this. Now we can finally move on to some fun.

Thisguy

Hahahahahahaha. Avatar reference.

Agreed. I like the character stuff, but this seemed like "let's stop the story to deal with Susan's issues", and we've had plenty of that already in this storyline. Though if taking the lifeguard mentality means she'll relax and enjoy transformation, the fun stuff will be more fun. So it's all good.

Serith

Exactly this. Hopefully she lightens up with that. And maybe even decides to take a fun physical transformation after the afformentioned lightening.

I am now super tempted to make Friday just Susan thinking about more stuff followed by a flashback of her considering more things that flashes back to another flashback that...

Neither, it's from a secondary character from The Legend of Korra: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojhTu9aAa_Y (warning: big spoilers if you go past about the 30-second mark)

I knew I was risking the contrary wrath of Dan by posting that. :p But this is me politely asking that you consider this: Susan has had many storylines focusing on her that deal with her character and development, while Ashley has only been a focus in two storylines, one of which was her introduction. Rhoda and Catalina didn't get any character focus until their EGS:NP storyline, despite being in the comic for much longer than Ashley. So while I know that the story needs to touch on Susan's issues so she's not out of character when dealing with transformation stuff, it feels like Goonmanji 2 has spent more time focusing on her than anyone else. It just starts to bother me, because it seems really unfair that the character who's had more of EGS dedicated to her than the other three combined still gets more of the story dedicated to her when it's supposed to be about all of them, not just her. I apologize for bringing this up over and over again, and I'll try to keep it to myself from now on. It's just been a constant irksome point for me in a story I've otherwise enjoyed.

Whereas I am honestly ten thousand percent okay with a focus on Susan working thru her issues. It's very relatable and very enjoyable, the way you do it. <3

Catalina is so adorable in that crown.

Thanks for the link, M. That was good for many chuckles!

Wonder if lifeguard Susan at a pool would prefer swimming trunks (and only trunks) to any of the usual women's swimsuits...

So I'm coming to this strip late and figuring out what's what. Love the art, is the magic board game based on a actual table top or inspired purely by Jumanji?

James C

It's based on a game that Dan made based on the original "Goonmanji" arc he wrote in 2004, which was inspired by Jumanji. So, both..? The game that just finished was a comicisation (graphic-novelisation?) of an actual playthrough of the game, with character dialog and jokes added in.

Also, if you're new to comic in general, this is a non-canon side story in what's called EGS:NP (El Goonish Shive: NewsPaper, referring to the strip format). There's also the main comic on the site that doesn't get posted here that has the full stories and whatnot (and a rocky start, as is sometimes the case in ye olde webcomics)

My Roommate, The Internet

Thanks to James and Dan. I've recently joined Patreon and just been following lots of webcomics here to get a sense of what's on Patreon. I think it's very cool and fascinating that your using Patreon to present a side-story. What the site/preferred platform for El Goonish Shive?
