I hope everybody is having a good Friday! Jérémie here, with today’s Patreon post about a topic we have been working on for a while now and that I’m super excited to reveal; how relationships will be defined in Paralives (as the title said!). As usual, this post is for Patrons only, so if you want to keep a good relationship with us, please do not share it, haha :)

👩‍🏫 The Basics

In Paralives, here’s how you develop relationships:

  • 📊 Relationships aren’t just defined by one progress bar.
  • 🏷️ Instead, relationships are defined by multiple specific labels that you unlock as you play.
  • 📈 These labels can be upgraded so that players can tailor each relationship.

On the left, you can see all of Sebastian’s connections (we still need to add a way to see how close you are to each character, at a glance). On the right, after selecting Jason, we can see the labels that define Sebastian’s relationship with Jason.

🔖 Labels

Something we wanted to do in Paralives was to make relationships between characters unique both to allow for storytelling opportunities and to give players different reasons to build relationships between characters in order to accomplish certain goals. A concept that we landed on is the idea of Relationship Labels. Two Parafolks are more than just “friends”, or “roommates” or simply “family members”, they can have a multitude of labels that represent their relationship. They can have friends that they hang out with to chill and relax and friends to share their deepest secrets and insecurities. They can go fish often with one of their coworkers, or have a secret crush on the lady that works at the library. All of these concepts will be identified as Labels.

Here are some labels that we could have in the game:

  • 👨‍👨‍👦‍👦 Labels that define family links: Mother, Father, Sister, Brother, Aunt, Cousin, etc
  • 🤝 Labels that define types of friendship: Friend, Confident, Cooking Buddy, Party Partner, etc
  • 💖 Labels that define romantic relationships: Love Interest, Secret Crush, Lovers, Married, etc
  • 💼 Labels that define professional connections: Boss, Coworker, Business Partner, etc
  • 😈 Labels that define enemies: Rival, Bad Neighbor, Mean Ex, etc

⭐ Combo Labels

To represent multifaceted and evolving relationships, if two Parafolks are high level in two specific labels, you could gain the opportunity to unlock what we call a Combo Label. These are powerful labels with better gameplay effects and bonuses. Some examples could be:

  • Friend + Confidant = ✨Close Friend
  • Coworker + Creative Buddy = ✨Productive Duo
  • Friend + Rival = ✨Frenemy
  • Friend + Mom = ✨Best Friend Mom
  • Close Friend + Lover =✨Life Partner

When two Parafolks have Combo Labels, you know that they have a history together!

🎮 How Labels Affect the Gameplay

This idea allows us to do plenty of interesting things:

  • Having one-sided labels, where characters might feel one way about another, but the feeling is not mutual.
  • Giving the player bonuses, such as cooking being easier, going faster or granting more skill experience when done with a “Cooking Buddy”.
  • Allow characters to progress in different directions than the ones you might be used to (enemies, rebel teenager, nosy neighbor) without feeling that you’re “failing” at something.
  • Labels having a level allows us to make relationships progress over time which can be pretty satisfying, especially if you get different bonuses along the way.
  • Unlocking new interactions, having impacts on careers and school-related activities, and much more!

Being used to baking together, these two are more efficient at it since they have leveled up their “Baking Buddies” relationship label quite a bit!

We really feel that such a system will allow for a large number of unique relationships where two pairs of Paras won’t exactly have the same labels and thus won’t have exactly the same past together. It also allows players to weave stories using the labels and the mechanics they will provide.

In this scenario, a Para has a secret crush on someone, so they can send them a secret love letter. The other Para will never know who it is from!

This is just a small introduction to our relationship system, of course and we can’t wait to detail more aspects of it later in the future. How labels are unlocked and leveled up as well as more mechanics related to them will be revealed in a later post.

I wish you all a good day and end this post by asking; What kind of Relationship Label would you love to see in Paralives, and what could that do on the game?

Jérémie out!

Edit - February 7, 2024: This post is now public, feel free to share it!

Michael

I love this new approach. Like you said, it would be great to see at a glance what the relationship is with a numerical score and status bar. Two questions: How will you handle relationship decay due to neglect? How will you time-lock relationship gain so you can’t go from strangers to married in a single day? 👀

Kasia

i am soooo in love with this idea! 😍 absolutely stunned at the originality and potential for unique relationships! I especially can't wait to see more of the negative combo relationships you might have like mortal enemies or something like that lol.

Jake Sae-Tern

I love the approach to this! Keep going, guys!

Julio Saliba

Awesome! I appreciate the work being done on this game! I hope to see a more expanded relationship panel, especially for family like 1st cousin, great uncle/aunt etc. to see how much we can make the family tree grow!

Madisyn Brandt

amazing work, i love the details!

mortia

Annoying nitpick (I'm sorry!) but you've written "Confident" as a status and I think you mean "Confidant/Confidante". But I think the idea of labels is interesting, relationships are one of the main things I've been waiting to see more of so I appreciate it!

Octavia

This post is everything! So realistic! I love the best friend mom since my mommy is my best friend in real life!! I can’t wait to play. You guys are amazing!

Paulus

this is amazing!! I’d love to see enemies to lovers!

Jérémie Tessier

We're not big fans of things decaying, but one of our ideas at the moment is that labels could become dormant if left untouched for a while with the possibility to rekindle them easily. If you have some friends that you used to play games with and you stop for a long while, that "label" you have with them will never go away. It could even give opportunities for new activities, like "getting the gang back together" and resuming progress. We're not ready to talk about relationship gain just yet! Thank you for the questions!

Jennifer Huber

Brilliant! I love the idea that there are so many unique ways to define the relationships. It will make for exciting gameplay!

tey711

The time and creative thought that went into the intricate ebb and flow of Para relationships has me so intrigued and ready to test and design endless relationship scenarios!! A seemingly unique approach and I love it!! ❤️ Great work devs!! 👏

Kymberlee86

I love everything about this post, especially the combo labels 😌❤️

pika

such a unique and smart approach

Alani Mason-Callaway

I wonder if there will be "favorites" (e.g., favorite cousin, favorite aunt, etc.)?

Amber Rodriguez

This labeling system is super creative! I love the combinations of relationships you can have. A friend/rival is really cool, I haven’t seen that expressed in these types of games before. Can there also be a possibility for enemies to lovers? I always love playing with relationships.

Natalie Schaleben

incredible n creative way of implementing relationships

Bucket

This is such an interesting way to implement relationships. I really like the integration of skills-- I think this is far more creative than a mere interaction. Can't wait to play it, frankly.

Erika

Huge fan of this, can’t wait to play!!

Marita Galaas Svendsen

Oooh. I love this! 😍 will there be like a half sibling or step sibling relationship maybe too? 😊 That would be a fun one. 😊

Tanisha Rogers

I love the idea baking buddy. I can’t wait to play

Laney 68

This all sounds so amazing ! 😍 I'm becoming more excited with each new post. What's so Incredible about this is it can be added too and evolve if expansions are brought out in the future. Well thought through and extremely clever guys 👏👏👏🥰

Gill Reid

This sounds amazing, I love this. So they'll be no meeting a para and getting married within an hour? (cough cough other well known game). Im getting more and more excited with each update. Thank you all for your hard work!

Mario Miravalles

"Baking buddies". Sure thing... Of course 😉

Jill Rochat

I love this idea SO much! Amazing work on all of this! I absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on it! <3 I know the game will be very mod friendly - will that include these relationship labels? It'd be fun to make our own labels for different hobbies and tie specific actions that would strengthen that relationship :D

Jérémie Tessier

Yes, absolutely! As we use the mod system to create the labels and everything around them, so will modders be able to do so!

Madeline

I'm interested to see how this would interact with Para's chosen personalities... I enjoy drama in my game relationships, so disagreements and complications are my bread and butter. I understand if it's not part of your overall vision, but I enjoy the idea of being able to have "fake/superficial friends" or "casual lovers" or "abusive family" or "annoying coworkers", etc etc. Edit: Oh! Also platonic partners would be a nice addition for ace folks.

Star Zoë

Oh my! This sounds absolutely like an amazing thing!

Jesslynn

i love this! i do have a question though; how long would it take for paras to develop a unique relationship label? i wouldn’t want paras to bake together once and then immediately develop the “baking buddies” label

Elizabeth D.

Will this game be available to mac users?

Jérémie Tessier

We're not ready to divulge details about how labels will be unlocked or how long it'll take just yet, but yes it's something we're keeping in mind!

Samantha

It sounds awesome already!! It would really be fun if we can have friends through mutual interests like, "Lord of the Rings" fans, or "Harry Potter" fans.

Hanna Dixon

It could be cool if there was a "doting/overbearing grandmother" or a "fun aunt/uncle"! The grandmother would try to sneak their grandkids gifts and treats and the fun aunt/uncle could maybe be a combo label to unlock!

Ellen

I stopped reading the post every 30 seconds just to freak outtttt, mannnnnnn this looks INCREDIBLE, I cant express in english how amazing is this sistem. VELHO, TAQUIPARIU ISSO TA MUITO INCRIVELMENTE MARAVILHO, UMA LAVA E SECA OU A MAIS TOP GELADEIRA BRASTEMP NÃO CHEGA AO NÍVEL DE INCRIVEL QUE TA ESSE SISTEMA, MANO MANO MANO NÃO CONSIGO ME AGUENTARRRRRR

Topaz Knaff

I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited for a game

Connor

Amazing!

CeeWilliams

"Mean Ex," yessss. Cue the drama. Would we also be able to get interactions that coincide with labels like "Ex Best Friend?" I don't always want a crap ton of drama, but unrequited love and friendships, as well as family, friends, and romantic partners betraying trust (cheating, gossiping, starting rumors, etc.) and causing negative labels and game play (interactions) would be amazing. It's boring not having true consequences if cheating or betrayal happens. I also want to see if interactions will unlock correctly for labels that are added by modding.

Austin F

I love this!! Such amazing work you guys!

Captain Chapstick

Oh, what a unique and awesome way to define relationships! Creates a lot of possible combos and keeping things unique, loving this!!

aza

My mind is literally blown away this is so exciting I need to take a break from work and just think about this like 🤯

Ashie Fanfics

I think it'd be interestingto have some label be more 'marked' if something happened between the paras, like, mom para yells at daughter para and daughter para has a loving mother label but also a abusive mother label at the same time and the labels change levels depending on how they treat each other but the abusive mother label never fades. Hope that makes sense...

mintyKHat

Love all efforts towards making each Para a unique experience 💖💖💖

Dizzardy

Relationship labels sound really promising, consider me intrigued!

Beth Attrup

u guys are gonna be so rich haha this is so awesome

Slippers

I'd love to have a "love at first sight" dynamic where a para falls madly in love with their "soulmate" and from then on just wants to be with that para, regardless of what we want them to do, lol. It would happen rarely, not to everyone, and just once for that para when it does occur.

Taylor Riegle

Omg! This is so awesome and realistic! The only thing I can think to add to this already awesome thing is have a negative score, like in the enemy ones. Say an old friend betrayed the selected para and their level is now in the negative, making it hard to forgive them or go back to the way it was. But either way I think this new system is genius and perfect for the game.

Rin Abedi

Will polyamory be a mechanic?

Lisa Hedlund

I really love this mechanic!😍 I especially love all the role playing potential of having multifaceted relationships, rather than a relationship just being good or bad. I’m really excited for Paras to have these more situational relationships based on their personalities and history!🤩

Abigail Buchmiller

I love this!!! The labels are such a great idea! And not having it all both ways is amazing! Sometimes friendships are one way only and not, oh yah were best friends because we've interacted for a few hours.

mintyKHat

Yes, I think a person should be able to be in multiple relationships without it necessarily causing an uproar as in some games (I personally think Paras should also be able to cheat without immediately getting caught, but that's another, unhealthy, dynamic). However, jealousy in other relationships in the game would make sense (and drama). Some way to indicate that the people involved are okay with it would be a possibility, though of course I'm not a programmer!

mintyKHat

When some people bake there is a lot of smoke. Haha yes I'm 12 right now. 🫣

Andrea Pandolfo Damiani

I know comparison is always ugly (although I remark that it's the second time that a Paralives Patreon post coincides with a teaser video from Life by You), but at the moment Paralives is my definite winner, leading in graphics (the style is just the best combo of cartoonish and real), complexity and realism, and the fact that it does not seem focussed on recreating the life of California's suburbia. I like how it is shaping to be a much more mature game than the competition. Of course, LbU has the budget, scale, and that awesome new dialogue system on its side - and a somewhat clearer release date. When I see Para, I still see an excellent concept with a year or two of development before even early access. But I hope I will be proven wrong (I wouldn't be a Patron if I didn't).

M13Vulpecula XIII, ruler of Vulpeculand

This idea seems very refreshing to me so I say yay to it ^^ Also fond of the one-sided label part, two Paras being able to think and feel different about each other adds more complexity and layeredness to their relationship, behaviour, and gameplay/story opportunities for us as a player, which is always a good thing :D

Synthia Hubbard

Mentor? Could that be a label? If you have them around, maybe the Para could feel more motivated to get things done. Or occassionally remember advice from their mentor which would motivated them in the moment of memory. Just a thought 🤔

Auntyleti

This is simply amazing. I can't wait to hear more and, of course, play with paras! Thank you.

MrPinguv

It’s just wow. It seems so cool that is crazy it wasn’t thought before. It gives more ideas for stories, like opening a bakery with a baking buddy or have just “dog buddies” from when you go to walk the dog and meet paras at the park. Also for the anonymous love letters would be could if we can confess to the other para we were the authors and get a big love boost or a strong ghosting lol. Or also make other para ask them what they think about you so you know if it’s worth to confess or not lol

Georgia Warrick

Oh I adore this in so many ways. I love a good enemies to lovers so I gotta throw out that I'd love a specific combo tag for two that hate each other but also delevep a romantic attraction. So much fun to be had with this system though, I'm super intrigued and can't wait to hear more!

Geneka McCall

Hi Jérémie! This concept is so unique! I love it. The many storytelling possibilities I see with these labels feel endless, my gosh. My excitement for Paralives grows greater with each update. Thank you for sharing with us and I can't wait to see more. Great job Parateam!

Gage Eakins

I like this a lot. This labels based system works a lot better for relationships than I think it worked in the needs system.

BonaparteBardithion .

Would be interesting to keep the "step-sibling" label even if that's no longer legally the case since the children of a couple that broke up will still have that history of growing up together.

Junio Jose

👋🇧🇷 hi Jeremie. Eu amei o conceito de camadas. Isso torna as relações tão únicas e motivadoras. A cada postagem fico muito entusiasmado com Paralives.

Sylvie Coward

Another vote for polyamory if at all possible!! I always love starting a dynasty with making my family lol. I know it’s more complex though, just want to indicate the interest existing!

Alex Scott

this is so cool omg

Jennifer

I'd like to see emotion labels, e.g., Bob accidentally farts loudly (or something else embarrassing) in front of acquaintance Sally. Bob gains an embarrassment label regarding Sally. (Sally may or may not have a related label for Bob). Bob may then be awkward and have a slower time building friendship labels with Sally until that label is reduced then removed (via time or through positive interactions depending on how high the embarrassment label got).

Joy Kennedy

Another label idea, a para could be labeled as a mentor, who offers guidance and skills to another para. Also, some paras may not have a father, mother, grandparent or are only children so they can form unique relationships with other paras with labels such as, “like a father/mother” or “like a sister/brother”.

Meri

I love the labels thing! That's so original and fun and makes one of the most interesting life sim game mechanics (relationships) that much more engaging!

chantal99

Oh I love this idea! Especially the one-sided feelings (although that’s sad sometimes 😭). Can‘t wait to play it! This will make a unique experience ❤️

ladyteruki

My relationship label with this functionality is "Extremely in love". This is full of potential ! I'm so happy to learn about gameplay mechanics like this one, which shows that Paralives is customizable and flexible not just in aesthetics, but also in gameplay. The Combos Labels are super interesting and hint at a very layered system ; with just 10 labels you already have about 100 different combos, if I understood correctly. This is properly insane, and by insane I mean exciting. Will we be able to create our own labels ? That said, I'm also terrified for my future Paras, who will have to have the "so, what are we ?!" conversation a lot XD

Megan Santucci

Brb I need to just scream with excitement for a minute, this is AMAZING

Marita Galaas Svendsen

Yes! That would be so amazing! And step mother/father too 😍 Because if we can do our own story. Sometimes couples break up and get a new partner. And maybe new kids. Or they already have one. 😄

Megan Santucci

I think it would be cool in general to have a mechanic for "have a define-the-relationship conversation." Paras could talk about whether they want to be exclusive, move in together, get married, have kids...

Kate, enjoyer of worlds

Love this idea! In that scenario Sally could make Bob feel more or less embarrassed depending on her social skills or traits or actions

Jennifer

The possibilities with modding could be endless too as Sally may treat Bob differently depending on her own traits, e.g., is she Proper or Squeamish or a Snob and thinks less of Bob? Or maybe she's a Bro or Likes Potty humour and just laughs it off not giving it a second thought.

Lane Brettschneider

As others have said above, I am SO excited to see how this will work with Paras' personalities! It seems like the possibilities are endless, and this truly makes for unique Para experiences and gameplay/story opportunities. It's amazing. As someone whose only knowledge of game design and development comes from these posts, I would be VERY interested to learn about the technical side of this - how do you make it work? How do the levels increase or decrease? I hope we will be able to learn more in a future Patreon post! Thank you SO MUCH for sharing!

Sarah

This is so good.

sofst

I am Blown away TAKE MY MONEY NOW, this makes me want to upgrade my pledge! I would love "Childhood friend" maybe someone you have a lot of affection for but is not ur bestie, "Fun friend"a aka friend with benefit but i think it's "lovers" since we stay PG, or maybe just "aquaintance", WOULD LOVE FOR AN OPTION TO DEFINE RELATIONSHIPS LABELS PRE-PLAYING

alexmasse

We will be looking into it and we are interested in having a way to define the parameters of a romantic relationship with someone

sofst

It could just be a start next to the persons picture!!

Ryn

This sounds amazing! I don't know quite what the limits are but here are a couple of things I thought: - 'Favourite child'/ 'Golden child' - 'Brother from another mother'/ 'sister from another mister' - Protective big sis/ big brother - Old friend - Found family? It would be really interesting if, once paras have a close enough relationship, they could start to consider each other 'family'. I'm really interested in how labels will change and develop overtime. For example, say Roger looks up to Jason, and the relationship is labelled 'idol'. What would happen if Roger and Jason get to know each other better, and become close friends? Would the label change to reflect that? After all, Roger might no longer 'idolise' Jason because he now knows Jason a lot better! So many possibilities! Also petition for 'Moustache' man to be called something like 'Mo Stache'. He's too iconic for a normal name! EDIT: because I keep thinking of new ideas now! Seriously, such an exciting way to design relationships, I can't stop thinking about it! - 'The One That Got Away' - maybe for a crush, or romantic interest that just never went any further. Perhaps, the para finds themselves thinking about 'The One That Got Away' sometimes and feels wistful/ sad. Maybe they 'want' to reach out to this person again... - 'Bad influence' - that one friend who brings out the chaotic worst in you... ;P Okay I'll stop adding new ideas now xD

sofst

You guys are doing things beyond expectations, moder will make this even more golden than it already is!!!!

alexmasse

Thank you, hehehe! The in-game modding tools will allow people to create new labels

alexmasse

Thank you Lane! Looking forward to sharing more about that in future posts!

sofst

Para--meter, im sorry but this could be a thing, like a love meter you get it

sofst

I love the idea confession!! even for paras that have been dating for a while, or lovers etc, get the chance to change the relationship and maybe needing a talk in the mirror to confess if you an insecure para?

sofst

BAD INFLUENCE IS A HIT, even your mother could have that label with one of your friends and not approuve of them

MrPinguv

The practicing would be cool, like if your para has a shy trait your success level will be lower and you need to practice the charisma skill more than a social or romantic para for the same chances of a positive outcome

Jordacious

To add on to the "buddy" label I would love to see a "Travel Buddy" for Paras who love to go anywhere and everywhere together! Whether it be a trip to the park or maybe the community pool! Also maybe a childhood/highschool sweetheart for the paras who've been friends since childhood and started a romantic relationship in their teens and continued their romance in adulthood.

Ryn

That's a cool idea! That would make 'bad influence' really versatile. Maybe if a para is 'my friend' + 'a bad influence' they could get the combo label 'Partners in Crime', and if they are 'my child's friend' + 'a bad influence' they could get the combo label 'A menace'. I love how many possibilities there are! EDIT (because now I just can’t stop thinking about different labels!) - Bad Influence + “My child” = Wild Child - Bad Influence + Ex = “The Mistake”/ “Lapse in judgment” - Bad Influence + Extended Family Member = “The Black Sheep” - Bad Influence + Party Partner = “Agent of chaos”/ “Devil on my shoulder” – The type of friend who has you doing shots when you know you’re working the next morning, and encourages you to do things you would never normally do. Paras could have special interactions during parties when they’re with this friend. So some PG ideas: “Dance on table”, romantic interactions with paras you don’t know, “tell person what you really think of them”, etc… - Bad Influence + Baking Buddies = “Avant-Garde Chef” – The type of friend who tells you to ignore the recipe or add weird ingredients because ‘why not’ xD Maybe ‘bad influence’ could have an unexpected benefit here. So sometimes, regardless of cooking skill, the food they cook together will be absolutely terrible and sometimes it will be absolutely perfect, with special effects. - Bad Influence + Grandma = “Cool Grandma” (and yes I’m thinking the type of Grandma who dyes her hair crazy colours, has deep bingo-related vendettas against other grans, and is a local terror on her mobility scooter xD ) There's just so much you can do with this system! I love how innovative it is – and that we might be able to add more labels with mods if we want!

ladyteruki

That is so cool. I'm really looking forward to knowing more about this, because a label is not just text, it also has a direct impact on various balances, since it weighs on relationship but also skill progression, for instance. And the more I think about it, it could make for a great way to create custom difficulties embedded into gameplay. I'm very excited about this.

ladyteruki

"The One That Got Away" OH MY GOD this is precious. Having this while being committed to someone else opens up so many possibilities. I love it. "Bad influence" is pretty funny :P

Daniel W

I agree with this, for example 'mean ex', would be great if this was consistent with a para that has mean and domineering personality traits, much more so than if the para was sweet and soft natured where it wouldn't make much sense

Cindy Coetzee

A friends with benefits or relationship with no strings attached would be cool.

Wondrous_Mickey

I hope to see a platonic & queerplatonic crush and relationship. Aro parafolks could also have something in terms of friend with benefits (but of course, can be applied to any parafolk!). I would like to see a labels that are based on relationships of other Sims, i.e. parafolk has best friend and little sibling, the sibling and parafolk's best friend could have labels "XXX little brother" & "XXX best friend" and therefore they could have unique interactions - like maybe the best friend would look after the sibling of his friend or the sibling would often tell their older sibling's best friend some emberassing things about them.. I would also like group labels - three best friends having the "three musketeers" label, or maybe a "XXX crew" for few parafolks with same interest... I also feel like this could be used for polyamorous relationships - Parafolks would have with each other the label that would determine their relationship (so you can go in detail of three way relationship or one parafolk being in love with two and those other having with each other "XXX partner") - same way, you can handle their kids, who could have different labels to each partner. To end this, I would also find cool if we got "you are like my brother" and so on labels

nemo

I love these concepts, especially the combos! I'm also wondering if these systems mean it will be simple to do things such as polyamorous romantic relationships?

Fran Smith

That sounds great too. Tennis partner, exercise sidekick, knitting club companion, car pool chum, gardening crony, movie mate, beach buddy. These would be super awesome, particularly, if I suspect correctly, we can probably make our own with the mod system.

Fran Smith

We really don't know much about L by U, even with the small snippet videos. As a Patreon, we still really know a lot more about Paralives in reality. But I don't see that these two games are particularly comparable at all. They look to be potentially completely and utterly different in gameplay, like Civilisation and City Skylines are both roughly society builders, but are completely different.

Leslie Reed

I have loved everything coming out of the brains of y'all for this game, but this is by far the most exciting and differentiating feature so far! I always found the game which should not be named to be very restrictive in relationship terms so it would be weird when the cheating husband's new boo was actually the best friend and suddenly the character was trying to beat on the best friend. Nah, it's complicated!

Teagan

I'm completely amazed and excited that you guys have chosen to take such a dynamic route with relationships. I genuinely cannot wait to explore every aspect when the game comes out. It's definitely true - I wished for more than just really basic relationships, but I didn't realise it would be attainable or even a goal of yours to do this. I'm so happy everything counts separately and can get intertwined into one phenomenal individual. I'm ecstatic, and I cannot wait for all the varying options and relationship types. Thank you so much for doing well beyond the minimum - this game won't just be great, it will be ground-breaking and become the backbone for all future development of simulation games. <3

Fran Smith

This is fabulous! Getting away from numeric counters (always was just unrealistic and naff) for relationships is fabulous! Once again you guys have come up with something that goes against the norm and flips it on it's head to be more realistic!! This will really be an icon game in years to come! I love the idea of labels. Of course other games use them, too, but using them as a main system that affects every Para and makes them unique is just awesome! Plus it gives the player choice on how they want to play the character, but goals at the same time. Truly inciteful and very clever. And enables one sided relationships. And every Para will play differently because they will all have different interactions available with different people and in the world depending upon these labels, right? I've run out of adjectives!! A couple ideas: Sometimes relationships change dramatically - a lover turns into an enemy, a best friend does something unforgivable and becomes hated. You mentioned that the labels will be permanent. I kind of agree with the dislike for decaying labels (best friends don't decay to acquaintances, and good old friends remain good old friends, even if they don't see each other often) and I like the idea that labels can be kind of suspended. But sometimes they also utterly change. Will that be included in the dynamics? Random ideas: car pool relationships, dog walkers (people either walking dogs together or end up going to the dog enclosure at the park at the same time and strike up a park acquaintance, shopping companions, various clubs (knitting/yoga/book/play (children play while adults chat)/game club etc, neighbours (noisy/friendly/messy (dislike messy yard etc)/social (coffee and chat at each other's houses etc)/rival (kick over each others garbage bin like Sims 2 kind of dislike). I know it's not planned, but if you do introduce separate money in the future, I'd like to play flatmates. I flatted a lot in my younger years and most of my flatmates (and those observed!) fell into some basic categories: Flatmate (that's it): live in the same house, but no real benefit (and none to the label either) Companionable flatmates: watch TV together, cook meals together, chat, get on well (label benefits perhaps when they clean or cook together, they clean faster, perhaps it's more enjoyable when, at home, they watch TV or do stuff together) Rival flatmates: some sort of jealousy, (label advantages and disadvantages - when things go well for the rival - flatmate is jealous, when things go badly for the rival, flatmate is secretly pleased) Flatmates with benefits (I'm sure you know what this is) Flatmate friends - really friends who go out together and share friends (labels - they get extra advantages on top of the others) And of course, Ex-flatmate - could still be friends/acquaintances or a suspended type label. With careers (particularly if careers develop beyond rabbit holes in the future), there could be a slew of various labels for these, and not just for workmates. In shops/restaurants - favourite customers, police - regular criminals ('nice' criminal/police hater etc, teachers (if you ever have realistic schools) - student relationships (the student from hell, the teacher pleaser, the daydreamer, the struggler who tries hard, the smart student who doesn't, the smart-ass, the joker, the whinger, the student who doesn't listen, the slow student who is always last ready, the curious student who always asks awkward questions, and a lot more. I'm biased here, of course, since I'm a teacher myself. If these labels become too many, perhaps they could only appear either when the Para is at work or when the other Para is in the vicinity. Or perhaps there could be tabs in that relationships window - close friends (default)/family/regular friends/work/acquaintances. Paras could have community acquaintance relationships - at the local shop where a Para always buys their milk, the gym etc, which could be affected by service/friendliness etc. The player can choose whether to further these into real friendships. These are people we like, often chat generally to, have a good relationship with, but just not a close one. And of course, there are lover/ex-lover relationships. Ex-lovers could end up friends, be cordial, be distant, dislike each other, end up rivals. This game is shaping up to be special!

Jaydee

This sounds amazing! I really hope to see step-parents / parents and in laws.

KenzTV

Like wow omg this game keep getting better and better this game deserves all the attention. So excited for SOME BIG REVEALs hopefully very soon . Can’t wait to how pregnancies, Marriages work in the game .

'The One That Got Away' hit me in the feels...and it's not helping that Fragile by Sting is currently playing on my phone right now 😭😂 But these are such lovely ideas!!! 🥰

ladyteruki

"Sometimes relationships change dramatically" I agree with that. You could have Best Friends and then one fight that ends it all completely (...but also some fights that don't matter in the long run, it depends on tons of other factors, like what triggered the fight in the first place). Or if you have someone really toxic in the life of your Para, you could decide for storytelling or gameplay purposes to get away from them permanently to start anew.

Love this 💚

TnT_Terry

Hi Jérémie, I love where you are going with this, just a heads up though, it isn't confident (this means being confident), what you mean is confidante ;) (one who you trust to confide in). But overall, I honestly love what @Fran Smith suggested, this will make this game stand out above all others <3 You all are doing an amazing job and I am so glad to be a patreon through the whole progress and beyond ;)

Zeevryn

I love the idea of relations being different and having different factors that affect each one!

Becky

This is so fresh and exciting!! IM IN LOVE! 😍😭👏🏻👏🏻 Thankyou so much team! I’m so so proud to of supported you guys for 3 years I think now and the progress is AMAZING! Keep it up. I love the relationship system so much! ✨

Bethy Grace

oh my gosh this is so cool. Thank you so much for such an interesting and unique take on inter-character relationships, I LOVE this. One-sided relationships! Interesting stories! Yes and yes and yes! Also, please tell me there's a friend + lover = "Friends with Benefits" combo label 😂 I can't remember if you have talked before about if there will be some kind of attraction system, but I'd be very interested to know how that plays into developing these labels. Like if a para finds another para who hits their attraction markers, could they "check out" and get an instant one-sided crush? I'm also very interested to see how personality traits will play into this. What would cause a para to be a "mean" ex versus an "old lover" versus a "friendly ex"? How will it effect friendships and the relationship labels that can be developed there? ... Yeah, I'm going to need a lot more information please haha.

Zedef

Really liking this as a concept! I do wonder how it works when someone is school/work buddy and then your para ages out/leaves school or work. Will they still be able to level up in that regard by reminiscing about shared experiences at that school/job or would it be forever stuck at the level? Do some labels eventually disappear? I assume there are some requirements for a label to be applied to a relationship with another para, but it'd be weird if there's a gazillion labels on a para they spend a lot of time together with. Saw some great suggestions in the other comments, but was wondering if there'll also be labels/indicators for birth parents, biological parents/siblings/other relatives and adoptive parents/siblings/other relatives? I'm aware that some adoptees see their adoptive family as their "real" family and might object to the adoptive label, whereas others might have bad experiences and would rather use adoptive than actual parents and so on. Could be tricky. Oh and similar for step-family. Another suggestion: would it be possible for paras or players to designate other paras as "friendzoned" and "soulmate"? If friendzoned then it'd never develop into a romantic relationship (exception might be a really slowburn with lots of support and occasional romantic attempt from the friendzoned para) and if designated as soulmate then they could seek out the soulmate for ultimate (romantic) happiness yet also be contend with a romantic relationship with a non-soulmate. This could also "liven up" the free will aspect and having some influence in paras' lives you're not actively playing with as a player (and not fear they'll end up with someone you don't want when you've left them unattended for an in-game year).

Amy

I really like this idea, it allows for more varies relationships than just friend, best friend etc. Some people have mentioned relationship decay and I agree that in other games, it can get annoying to constantly maintain them, that being said, not contacting someone for a really long time must have an effect on the relationship right? Maybe the stronger the relationship, the less the relationship decays and maybe if they have been friends in the past, it would be a lot easier to revive the relationship because they are being influenced by past memories. I'm just rambling now, but I really like what is being done here.

Sarah

With every post I get more and more excited for this game! You guys are amazing! Keep up the amazing work

Lucrecia Peyrefitte

Oh man this is so amazing. I can already see how I’m gonna play my paras

samber

I loooove this idea! I've always wanted more complex, dynamic and unique relationships in a life sim game! Some sort of labels that I would like to see are Jogging Buddy, Affectionate Friendship,Self-Improvement Partner, stuff like that. :) Very exciting! I can't wait to play the finished game! You guys are doing so great!

Natália Stein

Every time I think you guys can't surprise me anymore you go and do something like this. I loved so much this ideia. This one-side relationship is perfect too!!

Pvydrow

I noticed that.... the rooms shown in this post... they have ceilings....... u can tell because of the lighting hehe. does that mean we're close to seeing how ceilings and the roofing tools will work? :D

Sehrys

this is absolutely outstanding, i LOVE this concept! seconding the desire for polyamorous and open relationships, for (queer-)platonic relationships that aren't treated as "less than" romantic relationships, and custom labels. i also hope there will be genderneutral versions of all labels (sibling, parent, spouse, nibling, etc.) and maybe the option to edit the names of labels in general? i vaguely remember you guys showcasing the option to edit text in the menu(?) some time back. there are definitely relationship labels that are commonly used that i would like to be able to adjust - for example i personally really, really dislike the phrase "friends with benefits", and i'd love to be able to relabel that, if that makes sense? anyway, very much looking forward to the upcoming details!! have a great weekend everyone x

Christina Renna

This is super interesting and has SO much potential for storytelling! I particularly love the "secret crush" label. I feel like I'm gonna be playing with that a lot, hehe. ^_^

Becky

This concept is so exciting!

Vicarious Human

This is sooooooo what I’ve longed for in LSGames relationships. I love this concept so very much. Thank you ParalivesTeam 🫶. This means a big deal to me and I’m sure the same to many others as well.

Miranda Angell

god im so exited for this game

comprehensive galaxy

Oh wow I love this!! One of the things I've felt has been missing from so many big name sim games is asymmetrical relationships. Can't wait to play with it!

crazycreature studios

This is so cool!! This is gonna be so fun to experiment and play around with! I’d love to see if paras could develop jealousy or admiration towards a particular para depending on their relationship and to see how they affect those relationships.

Ryn

Ooooh I love the idea of other para's relationships affecting yours! You could have things like Best Friend's Mean Ex who your para hates on principle. Or if para A has a secret crush on para B, who is already in a relationship, maybe para a could be Romantic Rivals with para B's partner. That could be a one-sided label. Para A hates para B's partner and they have no idea xD

Hannah Moody-Goo

This is so awesome! I'm really excited about the storytelling possibilities that labels opens up. It also makes it easier to return to a game after a period of not playing and remember exactly where characters are at and where you are in a story. :) I'm excited to see how the rebellious teens work with labels. Some teens may be rebellious but have, or end up having a good relationship with their parent(s) while others might end up not having such a good relationship with them into adulthood.

Elen Pink

I am very curious about what traits/personalities will cause certain parafolk to like or dislike each other. I hope the player doesn't have that much control over that; as in I hope that a parafolk will dislike another parafolk no matter how much they interact.

lux

the secret crush would be so cute for story-telling

Em Zed

I would love for there to be some traits that we can apply to Paras, that would immediately apply a relationship label to specific/all Paras. For example, a Para with the trait "Mayor" or "Celebrity" or "Attractive" or "Evil" would affect what kind of relationship label others get for them. Celebrity trait might equal "Fan" relationship label for other Paras. They would then have unique interactions they could do with each other, or react uniquely to that Para. This kind of setup would make it really easy for us to mod historical neighbourhoods in the future ;)

Jen-nay S

I adore this concept for relationship building! It feels so much more realistic and has a lot of room for storytelling and game-play! <3

Kayla

I love this so fkn much!!!!! What an amazing concept to bring to life in this game!!! I know it's hard/was hard/will be hard (lol) to accomplish, but that's going to bring such an amazing dynamic to the gameplay that I've never personally seen before. 🥰🥰🥰🥰

max

This is so cool! I'm so excited for this game and the storytelling I can do with it 🥺

Kechi

Love, love, LOVE that you're included one-sided relationships. It makes for far more realism to have relationships where one person feels more strongly about the other or even maybe one person liking/loving a person but that person not liking them at all.

Catloverplayer

Please have boy/girlfriends and exes.

Catloverplayer

I'd love to see friends with benefits.

Kanesa Miller

The ability for a Para to be polyamorous would be wonderful.

Khaya

Mindblowing!! Every post just gets me more excited for the game! I love your approach and the way you question what has been the norm in life sim games until now and improve on it! I love the realism the relationship system, real life relationships are dynamic and complex and I love that will be a possibility to play with. As far as relationship labels I think it would be interesting to have some formal/relationships that would make some sims feel awkward if they met in public, like guidance counselor, therapist, doctor, divorce lawyer, school dean/principal, financial advisor, (these would depend on careers of course.) and it would depend how they react depending on personality, shy vs extrovert etc.

Kyu Mi

I love this. Hopefully there'll be also comfort person 👀

teplavecernice

this is so cool! can't wait for my paras to be cooking/baking buddies with their grandparents 🥰 i would def love to see "friends with benefits" or even something like "sidepiece" to stir up some drama 😈

Panthro Samah

This is much better than what I was expecting!

James Bender

You going to add Mod expancane pack. sorry not very good at spelling

James Bender

21 or over mod expansions pack

James Bender

you can add a state id for that

Anna-Maria Kuru

Ahhh! Looks like so much fun!!! This complexity and ability to progress on relationships is what I've wanted in a life sim. Khaya's idea to have a professional-customer relationship is great. I'd like to have also more hobby related buddies, and family relations gone bad. Also relations spesific to certain ages like favourite parent or elder's caretaker.

Melissa

I love everything about this!!! <3

Flávia Ramalho

I love the system, the idea looks amazing and complex enough to have different kind os relationships. Is it going to be possible to have different romantic relationships labels with different people like friendships?

Leticia

Esto es increíble, quiero llorar de la emoción. No he visto un juego igual y al que se le haya puesto tanto cariño como a este. Estoy sin palabras, de verdad. Muchísimas gracias por todo esto.

Nathalie Carluccio

Wow I am very excited 😊😊😊 looks great 👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️

Jailene Rosario

I would love to be able to see open relationship styles natively in game without need for mods

Karina

I love how the relationship system looks so far, especially the idea of 2-sided relationships! It reminds me a bit of Tomodachi Life, which despite being repetitive felt very replayable in part due to this type of relationship system on top of its overall weirdness. Just wanted to leave off with saying you guys are doing amazing from what I can tell and thank you!

Maiara Fonseca de Alencar Barbosa

I like the potential this brings to story telling. Like, having a ex that you're still in love with... That would be so great.

Mila

I would Love a Friends with benefits Label xD

TriforceSims

Love this, I can see endless possibilities & it makes the relationships feel more personal and real. Only thing I'd change is the example "Close Friend + Lover = Life Partner" - it'd be nice to see a life partner option not involving romance for aromantic paras. But I get that was just an example! Super excited to play this game ^_^

Lealovescats

Such an amazing idea! I feel like this would also motivate me to build skills and to build relationships. It is also more realistic. Let's do it together because it will be faster and the result will be better. Love it!

Jordan Harrison

This is a literal game changer. By far my favorite feature yet

Kayleigh

I looove everything about this! Can’t wait to see this develop.

Jessica V

This is an amazing feature! Can you have enemy and lover at the same time?

Juliana V.

I loved the ideas, I just hope, o a very personal oppinion, that the level system is a bite more hidden, since it is kindda strage to see "cooking buddies lv 5" XD But I undertand that it is a early stage and this can change :D

Khaos

So happy to see this!!! The possibilities will be nearly endless and it will allow for really unique situations, like not being super friendly with someone but confiding in them cuz of a shared history or something

Mia

Love this!!!
