Just thinking about the ratios: since you need 6 engine blocks for each ship body, reducing the gap between engine blocks by 1 requires reducing the gap between ship bodies by 6. That's why the ship bodies got out of hand so fast.

I found a decent strategy for early cycles optimisation was to just beat the level as normal on the default rate, then increase the rate until your solution no longer works. This won't get you the highest scores in most cases, but it will improve over the average for many levels.

You literally just stumbled onto basically this idea right at the end after I commented lol. But yeah, proper optimisation usually does require a completely new design, and optimising for each is its own unique challenge. Footprint I think measures the top-down area of any blocks you place, as well as any area over which parts travel, so you gotta think more about stacking conveyors vertically to keep everything within the same footprint, that can be pretty fun to do.
