Makima [Chainsaw Man] (Patreon)

Makima is one of the characters I think was designed to make you feel multiple things when you really sit down to think for a moment whether you like her or not. Chainsaw Man is a great anime and I've enjoyed watching/reading the series so far but one of the greatest achievement by the author is to make you as the reader feel this confusion.

Even as I'm typing this, I don't have a good way to explain Makima as a character. She seems at first glance a villain but not a villain, if that makes sense. Maybe this is what you'd call an anti-villain as one of the goals she set out for herself was wanting a family, but because she's so messed up that she went about it in the wrong way.

 Some people might think she's a control freak, but I beg to differ. I think one of the main reasons why she was so infatuated with the Chainsaw Man was the fact that it's something beyond her control, she became a fan of Chainsaw Man precisely because it wasn't something she could control. The actions she takes throughout the series seem evil and ruthless at a glance, but she doesn't have an ego at all, as if she doesn't feel anything towards anything. 

Her motives are strange and wacky, but those motives are very consistent with who she is and what she does. She never goes around committing genocide for the hell of it, and she never does anything pointless throughout the series. It's as if she's a machine that doesn't waste any move. 

She does what she does for her objective without feeling happy or sad when doing it like breathing is for ordinary people, but for Makima she commits evil as easily as breathing without feeling a thing.

In the grand scheme of things, I think Makima was a fantastic villain, one you can both adore and feel disgusted with at the same time.
