Hey everyone. Should I get off my set-in-my-ways boomer ass and make a Discord server for folks to socialize on? Should I lock it to members here? I'm always busy making new stuff, but often have spare time in the evenings to devote to extras.

Is there a way to lock it to members of Patreon? Or even certain rooms for certain tiers only? I want general feedback of what you think of this, as well as potential pitfalls to doing this.

Discuss.

I would support that a great deal. There's a tutorial video for having the Discord server be a benefit for Patrons here: https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/360041271791-Add-Discord-as-a-benefit-for-patrons-Video-tutorial-

Mark

I'd be down with a Discord server. And yeah, if you make the server, hook it up to the Patreon integration, and turn off invite generation, then it should be locked so that only members can join. From there, you should be able to set roles based on tier and limit channel access based on those roles.

Anonymous

You’d have to give some energy to manage a community (either as self or with moderators) which could just be drama or energy you could avoid by not having a discord.

Anonymous

Just fyi, iPhone users can’t access sexually explicit Discord servers.

ShinobiSparrow

I know that there is integration to allow only members into a discord server. I know because I’m a member in such a type of server. Not sure how to do it though. Also it’s possible to enable channels per tier.

Anonymous

I think you could lock certain rooms to the patreon tiers but leave the rest open to the public

Anonymous

I would definitely join a discord. As for locking it, I know you can but I don't know how. I think as long as you don't share patreon exclusive content or lock that channel, then you could keep the server open to anyone with the invite link(just don't make the link public otherwise you'll get a ton of bots I've heard).

Jordan C. Wilde

There should be a way to link a discord to patreon rewards ao that all patreons of a certain tier will automatically get added to the server if they have their discord and patreon linked. As for locking it to members only, you should be able to turn off manual invites iirc

Anonymous

If we can chat with Red, sure thing 😉 i don’t have discord so far but if go with it, i would get it too. Apart from that, thanks for all your work, absolutely love 👏🏻

Anonymous

But it does provide a socialization point for your community that can have daily activity. Although I think it lacks in being able to view and admire art in the same way that a gallery or Patreon might.

Anonymous

While that is true, there is a way around it. You do need to set it to allow it on the web/computer servers. So it is more trouble, but there are options.

Anonymous

Patreon has integrated features for Discord such as auto-join a discord when you pledge (configurable per tier) and/or be given a specific role in said discord when you pledge based on tier as well. Works pretty well for other creators I’ve seen. Big thing will be finding someone(s) to moderate so you don’t have to. Also the iphone explicit content thing is ignored via a setting on the person’s discord profile.

Anonymous

Unless Patreon has some sort of way to monitor the discord account to tiers and who can do what? That's more complicated than it's worth. Patreon only and call it a day.

GoddessMar

Agreed. It should be members only.

A Patreon of the Ahts

I believe that you should set one up and lock it for patrons only.

Anonymous

They added a setting you can enable on your desktop/web version to allow explicit content.

Thunder Rahja

Beware if you go through with it. People here on Patreon who choose not to join might be left out of important messages and choices offered. It's not something that happens deliberately, but is often the result of one's perception of activity.

Thaddeus J

Perhaps discord would be a good place to share links to older comics you aren't monetizing anymore?

Furryhour

I wouldn't mind discord, just apply certain roles to specific tiers and you should be good

jaynaylor

I would imagine it being a social place, and maybe a place for events, but not something where I'd have exclusives.

Anonymous

Discord can be cool and I'm active on a couple servers already, so I'd see this regularly. It can be a great place for the community to socialize and share stuff. And you can easily set up different conversations for different topics. I agree with Thunder Rahja that if you make announcements on Discord, that people that are supporters and not interested in Discord or haven't joined will miss those.

Marco McCain

I'm on other patreons where they use the Discord integration and it works pretty well! More info here: https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/213552323-How-to-connect-Discord-to-Patreon-Creator- I imagine you're likely to have non-Patreon people who would want to join the server just to brigade and troll, so I would recommend keeping the Discord server Patron-only. In the current state of the internet, IMO, small communities work the best. I'd like to second the requirement that you find someone else to moderate for you, though. Doesn't have to be much, just someone other than you who's willing to answer questions, mute people, enforce rules, ban/kick, etc. They should be available to check the Discord throughout the day, or at least be able to respond to pings from members.

Gallaterror89

It would be a great idea to have, make patreon only channels and public channels for those who don't want to be left out

Anonymous

I have so many discord servers already

Anonymous

It takes some work to set up and maintain but it can be a nice place for the community to hang out and discuss. You could check out similar (very popular nsfw anthro) artist's discord servers and see if its really what you want. I know Meesh has one linked to his patreon and its a cool hub.

jaynaylor

I worry about the public channels being misused and becoming unmanageable.

Ragingwerewolf

Discord server sounds dope We gonna need Lotta Ass emotes

Emilien Wild

Sounds like the orgy is about to start.

pokediginut

On the one hand I would absolutely find it fun to have a community set around your work and art On the other hand you would need some strong moderators and strict rules as I’ve seen way too many adult discords descend into alot of drama and trouble

Gallaterror89

True, then if that would be the case a patreon only could be the solution with a few examples from other nsfw and sfw discord groups

Antonio C

theres a discord patreon bot if you want to gate the server to just patreons.

Anonymous

Thats what mods are for, lots of creators have discords that have public channels and patreon or supporter only channels. It all depends on what you as a creator want to offer to people. If you think it could be something we would all enjoy then go for it

MT_Fox

Too many discords and too busy working and being productive to spend time on one. I like the short structured Patreon reports

Lord Kaio

Personally I love the idea. I would love for an opportunity to chat with you more meet some of your other fans and we can discuss art styles and characters we like or even events or whatever whatever. As one of your fans I guess I would be all for just for the chance to communicate with you more. Would love to see more behind the scenes and just general chit chat. But also as your fan I'd want you to be happy and comfortable with your decisions and so if it's something you wanted to do I'm supported but if it's something you feel like you "have" to do.... I'd rather you be comfortable and happy in the end.

Jurann MacRae

My knee-jerk: OML another fucking Patreon Discord server. Honestly, I would say don't waste your time, because that's what this will wind up doing: wasting a lot of your time. Also, given your politics I think this is also inviting some massive drama to take place on your Discord if you put one up. Just save yourself the time and angst, unless you're basically going to turn the entire server over to some mods and admins you trust at which point nobody's even going to want to be there anyway. I say this from a position of experience with dozens of other Patreon Discord servers. Side note: I don't think you're a Boomer. I'm older then you and I'm barely even Gen X.

Wildboy5699

I would be down if you had a discord server. I supported a few people on Patreon who had a discord server just for Patreons. It can be a place to just talk about your comics and characters. You can make certain sections for certain things. For example: If you want a section for people to just chat and talk, then that would be a general chat section. If someone or you wants to share NSFW pictures of your characters or something that's NSFW, then they would make a NSFW section. I could maybe help start one up and make it and possibly share it to you and see what you think of it, if that'll help.

Manrid Brizon

It may be different for the furry writers, like myself, but I find that art is more a benevolent dictatorship than anything else. Unless you want to socialize with fans, you won't gain anything substantial that you don't already receive with polls on Patreon. You aren't missing out on anything.

jaynaylor

There aren't political arguments here, so I don't imagine there'd be any on Discord. I guess a rule would cut it off at the pass.

Anonymous

You can make private channels and different roles (tiers) and give access to those channels to said roles

Jurann MacRae

It's Discord... people get after other people over politics incessantly, on every server. (I run 3 servers myself, granted one of them is specifically for furries talking about politics.) And the overwhelming majority of Discord users are die-hard wokeists. Just think of it as Twitter but with live discussions. Now with that frame of reference in your head, visualizing what that would look like, that's something you want? I mean, you could get lucky and it turns out that 100% of your fans are alt-right folks who are going to just fall straight in-line in your echo chamber, but my guess is that at least 60% of your fans and Patreon supporters are guilty wokeists who love your work but secretly on the DL so their friends don't think they're wingnuts.

firandor

I dunno. Fanbase discords usually turn into a political cesspit, and when "discussion of politics" gets banned, all that really happens is the politics of one side become law of discussion. Then you get fans that gatekeep for the creator's attention and shit, and others that are there just to be assholes to all other fans. I think getting involved in any discord is the number one reason I've stopped caring about someone's art.

Anonymous

I like having discords with nsfw artists, gives a better place for discussion other than comments and allows for more clear sectioning of things, you can have a server and lock different channels to tiers of patrons.

Thatguyuknow

Will you have a mod for the discord? It's a lot of work maintaining a place you want. You can make access exclusive for patrons only I believe so if you think everyone here is gonna be chill you can do that.

Deeeeeeeer

Speaking from the perspective of recently creating a community discord server after said community pressed me to make one, I have a few points: - I think the key is what -you- want, because like another user said, a lot of this is going to end up back on you, even if you have mods and admins-- people will likely still inevitably try to get the 'end word' from you as the owner. - If the prospect of maintaining a Discord server sounds like something you could do long-term, I would say proceed. Keeping in mind of course that there will always be trolls and assholes that break the rules you set, but I think the fact that it would be limited to Patreon members only would eliminate a lot of that. It also might severely decrease the amount of people that end up joining. - There are always going to be people that LOVE the idea of a Discord, but never (or are slow to) join it once it's finally created. So you'll inevitably get some yes's on here for that reason - If you'd like to manage and maintain a place that is purely to discuss your art or things related to Patreon, I could see Discord being a useful tool as long as you completely switch over to it for announcements, etc... otherwise you'll just be splitting your audience and/or have to announce things in both locations. - Keep in mind that you'll likely be asked for a bunch of features that can really only be managed by discord bots and third-party addons that require some minor upkeep but a lot more digging/document-reading to figure out how they work, how they are set up, etc. - Your mods/admins can do this instead, but it always helps to know it yourself. - Discord servers, as with any chat-based community, are PRIME areas for drama. You will discover a thousand different ways people can get upset over things. It's frustrating, but can be rewarding if done with patience and consistency. Like other users are saying, this includes politics as well.

jaynaylor

What I mean is, if I say you're not allowed to discuss politics there. I mean, we don't do it here and it's fine. I'm pulling from Patreon, not the general population.

Anonymous

I'll support it if you go for it, but I find Patreon more convenient. Personal preference.

Anonymous

I've run and been moderation on a few discord servers, including getting them set up and structured. Patreon offers a discord bot that will automate assigning roles or labels to your members based on their patreon status. It would take a short bit to set up, but once it's set up it should in theory run itself. Rarely do I have to adjust my bots in servers I have run. Discord gives you the ability to change permissions in each individual channel. So you can lock channels to only be accessible by certain users with particular roles/labels that are assigned by the Patreon connected bot. Some pitfalls: - Small communities, few issues. Larger communities, more issues. - There absolutely will, given enough time, be an issue that requires moderation of some kind, even in a small server. - A basic discord server is simple to setup but to tweak it with emojis, banners, boosts, stickers as it grows and changes does take some time. - Choosing moderators and/or overseeing moderation can be work as well. - NSFW nature can bring about the wrong kind of people. Or if minors get involved when they shouldn't be. People may use the space to connect for NSFW activities.

DresdenQ

theres a way to limit it to patreons, but only as far as letting them in, it doesn't keep track of access were someone to stop being a patreon, they will still be on the discord - I don;t think you can specifiy access limits with regards to tier here on patreon - if you want to do it, sure, sounds fun, but I don;t think it's really necessary - I have a few creators who set it up, and then have no interaction with it, it's just for fans to chat, so that's always an option, but we'll keep commenting here anyways so ...

Justin Clemons

It has its positive and negative aspects, but ultimately it depends on if you feel you have the time to dedicate to it, cause like all things it will require some dedication

Jurann MacRae

Yeah, I wasn't sure I should address that because it's a bit more assumptive on my part to make this claim, but here goes: People resect your Patreon 1) because it's YOUR space, you are paying for this space and it's a private website not a live chat environment, 2) people on Discord feel that it's a communal space and that they are more free to express themselves and carve out their own little space in YOUR server, trust me, the entitlement is real there, 3) in a live environment, people are much more likely to knee-jerk and simply react without thinking when they see a trigger word or a dog-whistle phrase whereas on a site like Patreon because it's not a 'live' environment they are more likely to think twice about off-the-cuff comments or being combative, 4) people take personal interactions more seriously in the moment (and more defensively) on a live service like Discord than in a loose comment system on a pay site like Patreon. YMMV of course. I'm just saying, consider the potential for shenanigans and personal conflict, which will result in headaches for you.

jaynaylor

Funny enough, I posted the image of Red wearing a moral patch with the phrase "Commie Killer" on it, on both Twitter and Fur Affinity. Had no complaints on Twitter, of all places. It was FA that attracted the complaints from communist furries.

Curtis Thompson

Honestly, I feel like what you have now is a happy medium. I get that Discord is the new, hip thing going on, but that's only if you want to connect more with your patrons in real time. Be aware, there are a lot of times where that 'real-time' interaction with people can feel like 'way too much.' Comments like these imply a 'peruse at leisure' feel, whereas something like discord carries an almost-instant-gratification feel to it, especially if people turn it into an attention- or popularity-conest. Also Drama, lots of drama.

Antarctican

I am a member of and subscribe to a few Adult Content Discord Servers. I would gladly subscribe and participate in a Discord Server that features your Artwork. Rooms could be created where you could could communicate or stream your game play as you desire. A good Administrator and Moderators will be required because I believe that if a Discord Server with your content is created, it will be VERY popular and have many members and will require oversight. Warmest Regards.

Pete Werking

It's up to you I would also pay extra for nsfw and discord access

Anonymous

Yes, embrace the shitshow that is discord. That being said, the less people to police the better...usually. prob limit it to patrons

Anonymous

Wait, boomer? I thought I was the gray muzzle here. As for discord I'd be careful. There are "folks" out there with nothing better to do than troll any group with furry anything on it. So, I'd say make it for members only.

Hikaru Katayamma

As someone who has built a discord server with over 14K users, I can say with all confidence that you can make membership limited to patreon members. Or, should you decide to cast a wider net, you can give patreon people permission that non-patreon members have. Of course, you can have patreon membership levels reflected in the Discord memberships, so the higher tier members get the juicer bits. If you want to see what I've done, check out https://discord.gg/OnlyInJapan

Villail

Skip the discord server. It's a headache waiting to happen, the more people you get, the more you'll have to moderate it. Or find others to do it for you. And even then, it's just one more thing that will suck up your time.

Joe

🙌🏾

Thomas

Having a disc board is going to require you to moderate a new platform and add to your workload. You can set it up for each discord member to have different tiers but then they have to connect their Patreon to their discord in order to be able to prove that they have material their paying for. It's probably easier for you to leave it on Patreon for now. Patreon starts cutting its and charging more processing as you end up losing money then discord might be something to push because you can control who's on it and set up a system through PayPal or whatever to make money for your work

Anonymous

You can completely restrict it. Theres several artist on patreon that if you dont link your patreon you can not even get to their discord server

Anonymous

Personally I’d recommend against it, because the effort needed to moderate a server is quite exhausting mentally. But maybe that won’t be the case with this community? Iv seen it work before or vice versa become a soul crushing experience for the creator.

Jacob Moss

A discord server can be a blessing and curse. It all depends on how you manage it. Inclusivity is the key here, I do believe it should be a discord open to patreon users only. This is mainly to simplify management of who has access to the server and make the moderators lives easier. This brings me to my other point, moderation. Having a good team of moderators and a set of clearly defined rules makes servers run like well oiled machines. Set it up right and get the right people in the right positions and you should be able to focus not on running the server but making use of it.

Jurann MacRae

It's nigh unto possible to predict where and how groups will respond to anything you post which may cause a political response - on some forums or platforms it simply may not get noticed enough for anyone to virtue signal against while other places it will. For those of us who post a lot of hot-takes on social media, I think we're constantly surprised and baffled about which posts take-off and go viral versus which ones do not.

Anonymous

I'm torn between having the opportunity to chat with an artist I've admired for years, and the embarrassment of having to ask my kids how to do that "discord thing."

jaynaylor

Haha. Honestly, you can just always message me through the message system here, or by email, or on Telegram, if you just want to chat about something.

Dezrath

One potential pitfall of discord is keeping it to current patreons. I'm in and out of certain subscriptions frequently, where I'll sub for a few months then unsub for a while. I've never lost access to a patreon discord after my membership lapsed. So this could potentially cause a good bit of bloat over time, and checking for it manually would be very tedious if not outright impossible. Cant say for certain if it's a good or bad idea. Would I like to see one? Yes. Would it work for this page? Maybe, but I'm not sure if the benefits would outweigh the extra effort required to moderate a server that will be as populated as yours would inevitably be. I honestly doubt it though, as it's better / safer for your business to have no discord than a poorly moderated one.

Stryker Colt

Im always up for more discord servers i occasionally interact with, tho ill say using some other artsist discords ive liked it. Obviously roles and making it private or not is all up tp you, im open to the idea

Anonymous

Seems like it could be worth a try

Vawlkus

Discord actually links into Patreon, so yeah, it can be limited to Patreon only. I know other artists do have their patreons set that way, and can limit access to channels depending on patreon level. What I do NOT know is how hard that is to setup and moderate. You can designate people to be moderators so you don't have to do all the work yourself, but you would need a couple of people you trust to "keep the peace" as it were. If you want, I can point out a few other artists that I follow that have their servers setup so you can poke them about how to go about it. Ultimately, don't do it just because you think you have to. Do it if you see value in it.

Absolutely YES!

Definitely would love a discord server

Big bad boys

I would love a discord server

Anonymous

I want to use bunny cunny emojis everywhere do it

Anonymous

Yes😂

Anonymous

I too would rather enjoy a discord.

Genwyn

No, continue being a boomer. But if you do lock it to one of the levels above $1.

Anonymous

I agree with Genwyn.

Anonymous

I too would enjoy a place to commune with other people of culture.

Anonymous

I generally don’t use discord for anything but the one game group I play with. I have maybe 40 channels I am in, but in reality they go ignored. I support the art, not try and hang with people.

Anonymous

I would love to see a discord server and possibly interact with others here. We do here in chat anyways, and those that prefer not be on discord aren't forced to do so. I would suggest access be locked to patreons to prevent spam though. Perhaps a channel to discuss or share your drawing tips? :P

Anonymous

Sounds like it could be a lark!

CT-Dragon88

DO It! I love being able to chat with the fans of the artists I like, and even sometimes the artist themselves! <3

Anonymous

mmmm can't wait for yet another forum for all of my baseless criticisms. why even call the movie the pink panther if he's not the main character?

Anonymous

So you can create discord for Patreon only. But you can also make a discord that has areas that are gated to Patreon tiers. So you can have a general area for everyone and a private area for Patreon things. You can, for example, post specific notifications in areas that are related to the tier. https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/213552323-How-to-connect-Discord-to-Patreon-Creator- for some basic information.

Anonymous

It takes a moment to set up. There are, of course, a bunch of third-party tools or plugins you can use to make management more effortless. For example, automated removal of roles and things for the ever-changing subscribers. Generally, I've seen discords used to drive retention of users and advertisement of releases. But it's also an excellent way to ensure people don't miss notifications (A lot don't check email) or things like this that you might not want to be locked behind a paywall.

zeel

It could be interesting. Communities are... Hard to predict. The server I'm a moderator on has around 3k users, but not nearly so many are very active, and we have had almost zero moderation issues. In the other hand, I know of smaller servers that just turned into Nazi cesspools. It's definitely going to be a different dynamic than Patreon, even if it's patron-only (which I recommend it be). Here, discussions are focused to specific topics (the post above them) and you control what topics start. Plus, Patreon isn't a good social app - which cuts down on users even trying to have discussions. Discord is designed to promote conversation, so you will likely get much more of it - including conversations you don't want to be a party to. It can be a lot of work. And it's impossible to know how your specific community will behave. It might be really great, or might turn into a shitshow. But if you're willing to put the time in to experiment, I say give it a shot. You can always delete it if things go badly.

Anonymous

Pros: Directly chat with and notify members of new posts of your supporting community.

Anonymous

Cons: If you are going to be chatting frequently with said-members, it will be a major distraction to your work.

Anonymous

I don´t really care. Never done discord...

Anonymous

Yes 🗿

RanaMcNeil

A discord server whould be surely great. It gives a good opportunity to interact with your supporters, have a chat, or gather suggestions and/or polls. And yes, it its possible to link it to patreon-subscribers. So everyone of your patreon subscibers can get access to the discord server.
