Vrithika

It's said this movie was the first time Indian producers learned that there is a larger overseas market where greater profits can be made. This film made more money globally than any other Indian movie before, and I believe that DDLJ when released did not beat its record (though it was very very close). It was also released at such a golden time because obviously, more NRIs lived in foreign countries than ever before so getting to watch movies as they were released, in the same weekend, was getting more accessible instead of waiting for a VHS release and sharing pirated copies of the movie. Of course, non-Indians especially in the Eastern hemisphere have always been Indian film lovers too so it's not like I'm forgetting them but the significant NRI populations is what made this shift happen. Plus those NRIs only had calling cards to call back home, there was no video call, or WhatsApp or Zoom so this movie made them feel like they were back home. This is a very enjoyable film but I'm afraid OSR may not like it, since the story has not aged well. I showed this movie to my gen-Z sister-in-law a week ago, and she literally asked me every 10 minutes, "so what is the story?" and I had to keep her entertained by telling her random facts -- like how Madhuri Dixit's iconic purple saree from this movie became so popular the following year, this color was out of stock in India for a little bit. Or that this is one of the few films in Indian cinema history where the leading female actor was paid more than the leading male actor.

This is a landmark film in the Hindi film history for all the reasons and more that Vrithika mentioned. You have to watch it at some point. No guarantee you will like it but do a watch along all the same. A WHOLE bunch of us will be super happy. Beware, this film has 14 songs!

If they liked DDLJ, they might enjoy this as well.. personally HAHK is my favorite guilty pleasure. Like its said if only life would be like a sooraj Barjatya movie :D This movie is iconic in many ways for that generation.. A must watch for OSR
