Hey Korbin, Not seen this video yet. I was wondering if you are going to watch Bawaal. It has got mixed reviews across. I watched it yesterday and to me it seemed worth a watch.. and it indeed will start a discussion. It would be interesting to know what you both think..

Anonymous

I saw Bawaal too. It is a competently made film, but I pretty much hated it once it got to Europe. This isn't blind hate, I can discuss if anyone asks.

Reva

I would love to discuss too.. but only once these guys watch it .. cant be discussed without spoilers

Jyothsna

I would rather they spend their time watching better movies instead of mid ones which are in the limelight just coz they are tone-deaf, the trivialisation of it all..

Jyothsna

Yeah, I did...I wanted to give it a chance since it was directed by Nitesh Tiwari...also easier to just put on a movie on OTT if you are feeling bored which is why a lot of average/bad movies also get decent viewership on OTT since more people are willing to give it a go to decide for themselves unlike theatrical where you would only spend the time/money if you hear good things about the movie in general. I don't know how Bawaal got approved at the script level...the equivalence that they tried to bring about was perplexing to say the least.

Reva

Thats Your opinion.. My opinion and takeaway is completely different. And thats why, I would like to know their opinion .. and it is Korbin and Rick’s choice to make if or if not they want to watch the movie. The very reason for this platform to exist. I did not want to influence their opinion with my views on it unless they chose to see and review it.

Jyothsna

When you said you saw the movie and it's worth a watch, that's also an opinion that is likely to influence them. I am not disregarding your opinion or how you felt about the movie....just like you have the right to ask Korbin/Rick to watch a certain movie, somebody else has the right to ask them not to waste their time on it. Since they watch only a certain number of movies every month unlike film critics who review every movie, I would rather they watch a good movie from any language (lots of them left) rather than a movie which some people thought was horrendous and others thought was kind of okay. It's only fair that people express either opinion about the movie (good/bad)....so that Korbin has an idea of how many people are interested in his views about the movie. Irrespective, he can still go ahead and watch the movie if he was intrigued by the trailer or wants to watch it to see what the fuss is all about.

Reva

I clearly asked him if he is planning to watch it.. I would not call it tone deaf at all. It is experimental and takeaways are different for different people. Thats a success in my eyes. Gehraiyaan had similar reaction and thats why it was on OTT. A tone deaf movie would be something like Housefull series.. Directors like Anurag Kashyap, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Shoojit Sircar will tell the story they want to. And Nitesh Tiwari is one of them.

Jyothsna

You don't need to keep defending your opinion about the movie! You have every right to feel the way you do as do I to feel the opposite....you have every right to ask Korbin to watch it as do I to ask him to maybe spend his time on another movie instead (from the long list of suggestions he already has). P.S: Gehraiyaan was a great movie and I would avoid generalizing when speaking about the merits of any movie by comparing it to other movies or directors to prove that this is a good one too rather than the specifics of the movie itself. This was a pointless discussion started just because someone else didn't agree with your movie recommendation to OSR...peace out ✌️

MayaR

Honestly this movie made me wonder if the writers ( emphasis on the plural) know how to a) write a story b) use metaphors properly c) know and understand the events of world history d) understand that use of Hitler as a comparison is usually deployed to end conversations not start conversations. The other line of questions that ran through my mind were centered around the writers’ imagined audience. To me it felt like they underestimated the intelligence of their audience who would be expected to just consume the message without a second thought. The movie made me nauseous at the simplicity in which these comparisons were being made conceptually and visually. UGH..

To be fair, there is some validity to calling it tone deaf. I agree with you that directors should experiment with stories and concepts, a d Nitesh Tiwari absolutely did that. He utterly failed, but I'm glad he tried.

Reva

@Yuvraj - I respect your opinion. To be fair to Korbin and OSR, I did not want to discuss the movie until they see it. I know Korbin reads all comments. Hence, I cannot express my POV in detail. And what I understood of it, I liked it. There is a reason why there are mixed reviews.

MayaR

Do you seriously think Korbin lives in an information bubble? However, you can absolutely share why you liked it? Or what parts seemed problematic to you? Also, isn’t this a forum where we discuss our thoughts and opinion too not just to engage Korbin in a discussion? I am interested in the thoughts of someone who actually liked this movie..

Beautyful_Mess

I wouldn’t advise anyone to watch Bawaal because it’s exactly what Rick predicted after the trailer. The comparison is not just tone deaf it’s absolutely nauseating. Hitler killing millions doesn’t equal to an abusive husband and if it takes to learn about what Hitler did and how hard his victims had it in WWII to turn you into a decent human being then you’re certainly lost cause. That movie shouldn’t have been made end of discussion. Just terrible and insensitive.

Reva

@Maya- It doesn’t feel right to me to discuss it here unless they and other Patrons watch it too. Then its a common ground for all patrons as well and we can assume whoever reads it is aware. And as of now, its only me who has a different view than the rest.

AJk21

Bawaal had a terrible trailer and WW2 comparisons. But actually a decent film

Reva

Same feeling.. trailer was weird but movie is decent. It actually has a pretty good takeaway. It all depends on your perspective

MayaR

That’s like saying “But other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?” OR after an embarrassing loss after scoring 85 runs Azaruddhin says “other than our batting, bowling and fielding issues our boys played well.. so you are saying Other than trivializing genocide, requiring a context of human suffering specifically being murdered in a gas chamber to view your wife as human and comparing your husband with hitler with a heart.. the movie was decent.. 🤦🏾‍♀️

Reva

That is not what I am saying. The trailer cut didnt tell me anything what the movie is going to be. The teaser and trailer cuts were confusing. I wanted to wait for reviews on that movie. I watched it based on initial reviews including BR.And I found it a decent film. Not his best work, but i dont have the same view what you and others here are thinking of it. TBH, very very far from it. They did not trivialize genocide.. They infact brought you what the characters felt when they were actually at those historical site. Nisha is aware, Ajju is not. What history teaches you at personal/ human level and how it can help change as a person.. Now I cannot delve in further without spoilers and explain further my understanding. But I do see the director’s honest intention. If you think they failed in execution, it is alright. But its a wrong story to tell and the makers are tone deaf, I dont agree to that. The character is despicable and tone deaf, not the movie or its intention. If really interested why they made the movie there is a masterclass of VD, Janhvi and Nitesh Tiwari where they explain intention on Pinkvilla. Nitesh Tiwari is a smart director and an honest artist with credibility. I saw Rick’s IG post the other day on insta based on 1 dialog and a screenshot without knowing the context of Bawaal and I feel bad that he is making an opinion without actually watching the movie.
