Thank you for this unexpected surprise. This was my late grandfather's favourite instrument. He LOVED listening to the Jalatarangam, as we call it in our part of the world. In fact, the story goes, when my parents got married, my otherwise extremely orthodox grandfather did the then radical thing of getting a Jalatarangam artist to perform at the reception, rather than a more traditional classical (Carnatic) instrument. The Jalatarangam can be used for either Hindustani or Carnatic music. It's an ancient instrument, but you'd be surprised to know where we find the oldest historical reference to it. The oldest known reference to a Jaltarang in historical texts is - The Kama Sutra!!! It is one of the 64 Arts and Sciences to be studied by a maiden for her to be considered accomplished
