From Adal:

Hey Future Lizards!

Jemma and I had an incredible time in London. The whole reason for the trip was to see Punchdrunk’s new immersive show The Burning Man and it didn’t disappoint. We ended up going 3 times over our stay and we’re currently trying to plan a way to get back and see it a few more times. I always have a fear of being hyperbolic or even just overly positive in my review of anything but I can’t stress enough how awe-inspiring the show was. It’s a 3 hour piece taking place in two massive conjoined warehouses with 28 characters from Greek Mythology involving dance, acrobatics and (mostly) silent acting. The scope of it is jaw-dropping and we were lucky enough to snag a few secret moments with the some of the characters. If you are going please let me know if you want any tips or just let me know what you thought of it! Ever since we got back I’ve been on a greek mythology kick; so if you have any recommended books or anything else that might scratch the itch please let me know. I just bought all 3 of Stephen Fry’s books on the subject but am looking for more.

We also had maybe the best meal of our lives at Restaurant Story in London as well as stops at Alter (phenomenal asian vegan place) and Dishoom (for breakfast twice). At the tail end of the trip I got violently sick (we think food poising from a fish and chip place) and it was truly the worst I've felt in my life but honestly it was all worth it. For the trip....not for the fish and chips.

Oh! I want to take a moment to mention my family and I all went up to Milwaukee to see Sadieh perform in the debut of a new play called ‘The Nativity Variations’ and I continue to be immensely proud of how incredible she is. If you get a chance please check it out and afterwards let her know she may be more talented than me but I am taller. The show runs through December 11th and tickets can be found here: https://www.milwaukeerep.com/shows/show/the-nativity-variations/

My fall semester teaching at UIC just ended so I’m getting ready to take a few trips. I’ll be in Galena, Vermont, NYC, San Francisco, London again hopefully and Mexico in the coming 2 months if you have any recs or advice!

Here’s what I consumed in November:

TV:

  • The English - LOVED this miniseries. Beautiful, weird, terrifying. Maybe my favorite opening title of a tv show and the performance by Rafe Spall makes me want to check out everything he’s ever been in.
  • The Crown s5
  • 1899 - new show by the creator of DARK! DARK is better but this is really well done
  • Welcome to Wrexham - great 18 episode docu series that’s like a real life Ted Lasso
  • Slow Horses s2 - season 1 was good. Based off the first 2 episodes this season is on track to be great. Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb continues to deliver the most effortlessly comfortable performance I’ve ever seen an actor give.
  • Yellowstone s5 - starting to cool off on this show! Beth Dutton plot lines are cringe inducing.
  • Tulsa King - terrible show but I’ll I’m absolutely going to keep watching.
  • Inside Man - speaking of terrible shows! I wanted to like this so bad but the characters make the most INSANE choices for seemingly no reason at every turn. The Tucch was good though.
  • Fleishman is in Trouble
  • Mythic Quest s3
  • The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special
  • Drink Masters
  • Hard Knocks: In Season
  • SHAQ

Movies:

  • NOPE
  • WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story
  • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
  • Enola Holmes 2
  • Say Hey Willie Mays
  • Neal Brennan: Blocks
  • My So-Called High School Rank
  • Waiting For Guffman - Jemma had never seen so we just watched. It holds up very well. “Everybody dance!”

Other Stuffs:

  • Playing God of War: Ragnarok on PS5
  • Finished Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on PS5
  • Playing Signalis on Switch - only played the first 15 minutes or so based on Casey Toney’s rec but very excited to keep going. The tone and design are right in my wheelhouse.
  • Saw Carly Rae Jepsen live! JPC and I agreed it was the physically most cramped and overheated show we’ve ever been to BUT Carly put on a tremendous performance. Highly recommend seeing her live.
  • I was a recent guest on The Great American Pop Culture Quiz Show podcast!
  • I was a recent guest on The Weekly Cooldown podcast!
  • I was a recent guest on Two Bandits Watching Bluey podcast
  • I was a recent guest on the Tabletop Workshop podcast!
  • Read the book? novella? Galatea. Cartoonishly short but so well written. I highly recommend reading all Madeline Miller has to offer.
  • Read the book Song of Achilles - speaking of…devoured this after seeing The Burnt City. I think I like Circe best but this a highly satisfying and emotional read that I flew though in a couple days.
  • Started reading the book - Less is Lost
  • Played the board game Down Force
  • Played more of the board game Quacks of Quedlinburg - I think this officially my new favorite game. JPC still kicks my ass at it but it’s a fucking blast win or lose.
  • Played the board game Lost Ruins of Arnak

Please let me know what you’ve been enjoying and have a wonderful holiday season!

Love

Adal

From JPC:

Hey Riddiots,

November was good! The big news is that iO, the improv comedy theatre in Chicago where Adal, Erin and I all performed pre-pandemic, has reopened! Adal and I are back doing Whirled News every Saturday at 8pm (the show is every Saturday but we won't necessarily always be there) and we'd love if you came to see it. Ticket buying on the website can be a little confusing but if you go here and search "whirled news" you'll see the shows pop up. We've already had a few HRR listeners drop by and it's been really cool meeting you!

In honor of the re-opening, I'm going to post this sketch that I co-wrote with my buddy Alex Nichols for iO's relatively short lived internet sketch program thing. I honestly don't really remember what it was. I DO remember that we got to work with some cool people and I think the sketch is still pretty funny. Anyway, enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2ytbyWKZqo

See you in December!

JPC

HRR Updates/News

  2. The December Review Crew tier Holiday Present Live Stream will be Tuesday December 13th from 7pm to 8pm CT! Come see what gifts we get for each other and if any of them are useful or just an absolute hindrance in life!
  3. We have an upcoming live show in San Francisco as part of the 2023 SF Sketchfest! We’ll be performing Sunday January 22nd at 4pm with our 4th host; Janetmorph herself…. Janet Varney! We’d love to see you there if you live in the area! Tickets and more info about the show and festival here: https://sfsketchfest.com/schedule-and-tickets/
  4. Have a wonderful holiday season and we’ll see you in 2023! If someone comes to your house claiming to be Uncle Santa or Second Cousin St. Nick or ANYONE with a relative based name; DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR!

Love you all!

Adal! I don't have any book recs off the top of my head but I've been making Grecian/Greek based Pokemon with my sister which I'm sure doesn't interest you since iirc you know nothing about Pokemon but basically, same :D

Adal- If you liked Breath of the Wild give Immortals Fenyx Rising a shot. It’s a fun game. You can complete it in 40-50 hours but spend way more if you want exploring in an open world. It reminds me of BOTW but with a greek mythology plot line.

Adal, great choice on getting Fry's books! They are amazing! I would also highly recommend Emily Wilson's translation of The Odyssey. I believe she is the first woman to translate The Odyssey into English, and she found that many, many translations by men included sexist translations and diminished women's roles and their humanity in the tale. Highly recommend her translation as it gets rid of the sexist and just plain incorrect translations, and its also just a great story!

Adal, there's this really neat indie musical you should check out if you're into Greek myth right now - it's called Hadestown! As an actual rec, the Percy Jackson books are very good if you haven't read them yet! They're YA so might be a little young for you, but I think you'd enjoy them

Legotti

I've started reading the old tintin comics and I'm finding them fun. Apparently there was also a cartoon? It's very well adapted.

Adal, I’ve yet to start watching S5 of Yellowstone (we wait until my sister comes home for the holidays) but from what I’ve heard lots of people agree that Beth is being a bit over played and boring. JPC, the sketch was so good and also very well shot (idk anything abt cinema but I thought it looked cool) and I loved seeing the foster doggies on social media. Erin, sup? How’s it going? Hope you enjoy your stay with your relatives and everyone stayed safe during that Big Snow. ( I’m Canadian and know nothing about US geography) 7:17

Adal I think you would like the book 15 dogs, it’s a short great read about the lives of 15 dogs in modern Toronto that were gifted human intelligence because of a bet between the Greek gods. https://www.amazon.com/Fifteen-Dogs-Andr%C3%A9-Alexis/dp/1552453057/ref=asc_df_1552453057/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312057607832&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14974585234243744450&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9018942&hvtargid=pla-436014143713&psc=1

Adal, I see you bought Fry’s books, but his narration of the audio books is positively transcendent. I have listened to all 3 several times over and his vocal characterization is hypnotic. If you have some travel coming up, throw it in your ears. You’ll thank me.

Sampanache

Glad to hear you had a great time in London Adal! Hades is a game that would massively scratch that itch and is phenomenal. I think JPC mentioned playing it so you don’t have to take my word for it.

I was going to recommend God of War Ragnarok for Adal's Greek Mythology kick but I see he's already playing it! It's a different retelling of the events of Ragnarok, and I think the voice actors did an phenomenal job of protraying the different characters in the game. Enjoy!
