From Adal:

My hectic season is over and now I coast! I still have a bit of travel and one more wedding to go to but it’s nice to know I’ll mostly be home and can nest on the couch watching spooky stuff with Jemma, Fries, Brisket and Cocoa. I’m looking forward to my annual rewatch of Over The Garden Wall; which if you haven’t seen you absolutely should do so. One of the rare pieces of media that (for as new as it is) feels like a timeless classic you’ve always loved. I think next year I’m going to try and rent out a movie theater and have a showing of it for anyone interested. If you’re looking for horror films this month might I recommend: The Thing, Hereditary, REC. (spanish version), It Follows, Trick R’ Treat and The Witch. Oh and also the (VERY) short ‘Lights Out!’ Possibly the most chilling 2 minutes of film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUQhNGEu2KA

Had a wonderful time on the road during the month. A huge thank you to everyone who came out to NYC and DC for the Hey Riddle Riddle Live shows! In NYC Jemma and I got to meet up with our friends Stuart and Sharlene to see A Strange Loop and afterwards they introduced us to one of our new favorite spots; Veselka! In Philly we had the best cheesesteaks and pizza at Angelo’s and fell hard for Korshak Bagels. Highly recommend all those places. I also got to spend some time in Cincinnati for a friend's birthday and it was a way cooler city then I remember from when I used to visit.

In the coming weeks Jemma and I are headed to Madison, WI for a concert, Milwaukee to see my sister do a show and London to catch the new Punchdrunk show; The Burning City! Please let me know if you have any tips for any of those cities. (Madison of course is the London of the Midwest).

Here’s what I consumed in September:

TV:

  • Sopranos - finally finished and dear god is it way funnier then I remember. Absolutely brilliant comedic moments sandwiched between violence and some of the best dramatic acting you’ll find
  • Andor
  • Reboot
  • Abbott Elementary season 2
  • Cobra Kai season 5
  • Survivor season 43
  • Ramy season 3
  • Chef’s Table: Pizza
  • Rick & Morty season 6
  • Los Espooky season 2
  • The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers season 2

Movies:

  • The Nice Guys - I’ve somehow missed seeing this movie until recently and I absolutely adore it.
  • Elvis
  • Many Saints of Newark
  • Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel
  • Patton Oswalt: We All Scream
  • Sam Morril: Same Time Tomorrow
  • Nick Kroll: Little Big Boy

Other Stuffs:

  • Inscryption - started playing this on PS4 after JPC, Arnie and Brooke Breit all raved about it. I can’t think of a more perfect seasonal game to have started and I’m giddy about how things keep continuing in the game in very surprising ways.
  • Started listening to The Always Sunny Podcast
  • I was a recent guest on a MEGA Live show in Chicago and had a wonderful time! Check out there show and catch them on tour if you can: https://www.megathepodcast.com/p/Live/
  • Speaking of shows to catch on the road; there’s a Big Grande tour! I don’t think there’s a current group of improvisers that makes me laugh more then these 4 do: https://biggrandewebsite.com/tourdates/
  • I was (just this morning!) a guest on the podcast That’s What I’m Tolkien About and had a great time discussing the latest episode of Rings Of Power. My episode I believe comes out this Tuesday if you’d like to listen!
  • Also out this Tuesday (10/4) is a new podcast I’ve been recording with QCode network called The Monster Line! I play a cowboy vampire so I’m reeeeallly stretching my character work to the limit. Check it out if you’re so inclined! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/id1645919438?ign-itscg=30200&ign-itsct=podcast_box_promote_link  Also @monsterlinepod on Twitter and Instagram
  • Lastly, Hello From the Magic Tavern has an upcoming live show in NYC! October 14th we’ll be performing at The Bell House for a Chunt For Red October live show featuring everyone’s favorite outro bully Tim Sniffen! (as well as other special guests). You can find more info and tickets at: https://hellofromthemagictavern.com/live-shows

Please let me know what you’ve been enjoying and let me know if you have any favorite haunted houses or fall activity spots in the Chicagoland area! I already plan on making my yearly trek to Bengston’s pumpkin farm and HellsGate Haunted House!

Love

From JPC:

Hey there Riddiots,

Oh man, Fall is in the air and I couldn't be happier! Mariah and I got a fire pit and we've been burning that bad boy non-stop. We've also realized that we have terrible luck because it's rained almost every time we've tried to use it.

Uh, what else... I've been getting into Bob's Burgers. And by that, I mean I've had it playing while I do other things and I'm firmly in the middle of season 6 right now. I slept on this show for a long time but it's very good! I've seen the first 3 episodes of Andor and it's a lot of fun. I feel like they really nailed the Star Wars formula of having young guy + old guy teaming up and fighting Space Cops.

Oh, and if you're eligible go and get your new Covid booster! I got mine and now I'm invincible.

Also, I'll plug the Billbuds Podcast because this month is our second annual Weeztoberfest where Johnny and I work our way chronologically through the albums of Weezer. This month we are reviewing 'Make Believe' through 'Death to False Metal' and this is a...very interesting period for Weezer. And we've also got a couple special guests who all really like Weezer, so we will definitely lean on them.

Be well, stay safe, hope you enjoy the Fall! (for those who observe it)

-JPC

JPC! (And anyone else that's enjoying Bob's Burgers) Please watch the Great North when you're caught up on Bob's Burgers. It was created by a couple of Bob's writers and it's somehow even better? (But maybe it's just Will Forte?)

Adal, how are you just going to sneak in Reboot?! I need to know your thoughts and feelings mah dude

Legotti

Looking forward to Monster Line, sounds fun. I’ve finally got around to watching Netflix’s adaption of Series of Unfortunate Events with Neil Patrick Harris as the villain. It’s -great-. Lightly absurdist in tone and with a whimsical visual design. I’d put it next to Pushing Daisies on a shelf.

For Adal, if you're willing to make a hike way into the western burbs, Goebbert's Farm in Pingree Grove is great for stereotypical fall activities. There's even a pumpkin eating dinosaur!

The original language (Spanish) version of REC is basically impossible to stream or buy digitally in the US. You’ll want to get it on dvd. Learn from my mistakes and plan ahead XD

Wauwatiki in Wauwatosa (west burb of Milwaukee) is a fun little tiki bar (https://wauwatikis.com)

Serpentine

What a great set of horror movie recs! Some of my favourites in there. If you like those, might I also suggest The Ritual (2017)? And Midsommar and The Babadook are no-brainers... But also Rabies, an Israeli film (it presents itself as a standard slasher, and saying anything else would spoil it), and Pontypool is one of my favourite "zombie" movies that I think is pretty underrated and underknown.

Adam Kronfeld

Trick r Treat is an absolute delight, an underrated gem, one of our favorites that we have to save for within a day or two of Halloween itself every year. On my wife's first deployment for work in like 2015, which was over Halloween, I gave her a little Sam action figure, which she's kept in her purse ever since so he can go with her everywhere.

Pontypool is incredible! That one was also harder to find than felt reasonable XD (for context I cohost a pod about horror films and we covered both REC and Pontypool lol. Also The Ritual!)

Thanks for the Lights Out recommendation Adal! It’s been a long time since I’ve watched something that creeped me out that much.

I love that Adal goes all out for his recs
