From Adal:

Hey you Future Lizards!

2022 has been pretty good so far! I’m daring to be optimistic! My dad came into town to stay with us for a few days on his way to Jordan to visit his sister he hasn’t seen in 12 years. It was nice to catch up with him and eat the 10 pounds of knafeh, baklava and other sweets he brought.

Jemma and I have been working on wedding stuff in anticipation of the big date in April! I say us but Jemma has (by her own desire!) taken on 95% of the work as she really enjoys figure out how to put it all together (again please understand she is WANTING to do most of the work! I’m not shirking my duties! I’m not a male 90’s sitcom character! “What do I want for the wedding? I don’t know babe….a keg under the table?!” (loud burp. Looks at camera and shrugs. Studio audience goes crazy. Shits pants and dies). Our invites are sent, our website is live, we started a honeyfund for Hawaii and we’re hoping things go as smoothly as possible! Wish us luck! If you have any Hawaii recommendations PLEASE send them my way in the comments here or through social media!

A couple days ago I got my first tattoo which as promised was an illustration inspired by Erin’s 10 word fairy tale from a Hey Riddle episode;  ‘Jay Jay, made of hay, couldn’t go to the bonfire’. I’m over the moon with how it turned out and in love with the art as commissioned by the white hot nova talent of HRR listener Jasmin Darnell (Twitter: @JasminDarnell  Instagram: @ya.hime). Hoping I can convince JPC and Erin to get matching or complimentary tattoos in the coming year as I’d like to get a few more!

I JUST got home from going with Matt Young to an AEW show that was a goddamn blast. We got to hang a bit with Nyla Rose and Aubrey Edwards after the show as they were nice enough to offer us tickets for the show. Highly recommend you check out some AEW. Nyla and Aubrey were phenomenal in the show and I’m curious to see what this Danhausen character is about.

ALSO Jemma and I leave for NYC in a couple of hours so I’m writing this quickly before I pack and head to O’hare at 4am! We’re gonna see Hadestown and Company again and spend some time with Jemma’s brother for his birthday.

Here’s what media I consumed in January -

TV:

  • Station 11 - one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. So in love with this.
  • Six Feet Under Season 5 - Jemma and I finally finished the series!
  • Sopranos Season 1
  • Yellowjackets
  • Peacemaker
  • The After Party - like a funny, weird, sometimes musical Rashomon! Highly recommend
  • The Legend of Vox Machina
  • The Women in the House Across the Street From the Girl in the Window - really well done as it’s a parody but they don’t go for a laugh a minute, it’s a big laugh every 5 minutes and the ending was *chef kiss*. Friend of the show Mary Holland is a delight in this as well!
  • Ozark Season 4
  • Gomorrah Season 1
  • Work In Progress Season 2
  • RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 14 - Jemma and I’s favorites are Cornbread and Angeria
  • After Life Season 3
  • Cheer Season 2
  • The Righteous Gemstones Season 2
  • Yearly Departed 2021
  • Moses Storm: Trash White - stand up special
  • Dan Soder: Son of a Gary - stand up special
  • Jim Gaffigan: Comedy Monster - stand up special
  • Jim Jefferies: Intolerant - stand up special
  • River Butcher:  A Different Kind of Dude - stand up special
  • Mark Normand: Out To Lunch - stand up special

Movies:

  • Good Time
  • Encanto

Other Stuffs:

  • New issue of SAGA!!
  • Later Alligator - video game on Switch (so funny and charming! Huge thanks to listener Emily P. who was kind enough to send me the game to play!)
  • Superliminal - video game on Switch
  • Metroid: Dread - video game on Switch
  • Talking Sopranos - podcast
  • Beef and Dairy Network - podcast
  • Three Bean Salad - podcast
  • Dear Earth, I’m Really Sorry - podcast (Matt Young’s new podcast! He’s fantastic in it!)

I guested on the following podcasts!

  • Sitcom D&D - Erin’s new podcast! It’s such a blast!
  • Finding Favorites with Leah Jones
  • This Startup is Being Recorded
  • Destination: Passport
  • Tomahawk and Stu Pitch a Podcast

Please let me know what you’ve been enjoying so I can consume some new media!

Love,

Adal

From JPC:

Hey Future Lizards -

Hope you all had a good January or as close to good as you can make it nowadays. We've had kind of a lot of snow here in Chicago which is fine because 2 of my neighbors have snow blowers and they love using them. It kinda makes me want to get a snow blower too cause it looks like so much fun. I also kind of love the idea that I can be in competition with my neighbors to see who can wake up earliest and clear the other person's sidewalk. There's no reason to turn it into a competition, of course, but that means that those fools will never seen me coming.

And since I've been inside way more, I've been watching more TV. Mariah and I are currently rewatching Community, a show we never finished all the way through. We just got to season 4 and we both realized why we stopped watching it in the first place. I'll say that it doesn't all age well, but the first 3 seasons have some good stuff. And Jim Rash's Dean character is an all-timer. And to Chang the subject, we've also been watching that Bobba Fett show, but honestly, it just makes me miss The Mandalorian. But also Ming-Na Wen kicks some ass on that show. I keep telling Mariah that I want to move like that when I'm 58, also we got married, but I'm 33 and I'm nowhere near that limber. I have a lot of work to do.

On Adal's suggestion, I played Nobody Saves the World (it's on xbox game pass right now) and it's a ton of fun. Really cool art direction and the game design is a lot of fun if you like hack and slash dungeon crawlers. I'll also say that it's not really balanced, but it's not trying to be so there's some fun in that. I'm also currently playing Death's Door which is very much my shit. You

can catch me streaming 10am-2pm most week days on Twitch.tv/sharkbarkman I have no idea what I'm going to play in Feb but rumor is that the Final Fantasy VI remaster is coming out this month and that's one of my favorite games, so I'll probably play it on stream.

I also wanted to thank everyone that had such kind things to say about Hey Riddle Station. I was very pleased with how it came together in the edit. Casey's sound design, Arne's theme and Adal & Erin's characters all just really blew me away. I'm so happy and lucky to be collaborating with such a talented group. I hope you all enjoy the conclusion ep!

Be safe and thank you for being here with us!

-JPC

Archive 81 on Netflix is really good but the original Podcast is amazing, all 3 seasons (and mini seasons)! I highly recommend you all give it a listen, it's spooky and the sound design was amazing :).

You have to go to Button Up cafe if you go to Oahu!! They have french toast that's a big cube filled with nutella or strawberry creme or a couple of versions, it's the best I've ever had.

AEW is great! I’m friends with Aubrey, as she is local to my area and I participate in the local wrestling scene. She’s a good person for sure.

so good to hear updates from y'all as always but I'm please begging you to reconsider Hawaii as a honeymoon location. A lot of native Hawaiians have been speaking up lately about the colossal detriment tourism has on Hawaii in general and the impact that decreased covid/travel regulations especially have had on the islands as a whole. I am not hawaiian (pretty far from it up in Canada haha) though my husband was raised there, I cannot speak for the native Hawaiians but I think it is important to draw attention to their cause. A direct quote here that summarizes some of the key issues of travelling to Hawaii, especially at this time: "Tourism makes it impossible to keep up with the rising cost of living. It brings in revenue and with that, becomes the fake state’s priority. Tourism pushes native Hawaiians from their land and homes, puts locals at risk for covid19, directly harms the delicate environment and native species here, houseless folk (many whom are native Hawaiian) are being illegally swept to make room for tourists at beaches, and locals are being restricted and fined for using water on east Maui, all while hotels can use up all the resources no problem and our government approves a million dollar home construction for new part-time residents (when locals who have been here for generations are being thrown into poverty, barely staying afloat, losing businesses and even their homes)" there are some articles/websites/threads by hawaiians that I can reccomend here: https://www.blooddiamondofthepacific.com/ http://freehawaii.info/ https://twitter.com/KanielaIng/status/1412667132773486596 https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ-LBxON-Ne/ I know y'all are lovely considerate people, and that a lot of the plight of the native Hawaiians is being silenced right now making it hard to actually get hold of this information in the first place, but I suggest looking into this for yourself and hearing out some native Hawaiian voices before you make your decision to travel there

Congrats, Mariah & JPC! Honeymoon suggestion for A&J: Four Seasons Hualalai for sure, if you’re planning on going to the Big Island. Even if it’s just for dinner at Ono. Fave lowkey spots for food: Da Poke Shack, Teshima’s & malasadas from Tex Drive-in
