March! A month AND a verb?! Very cool.

Hey we have some big stuff we’d love for you to check out so make sure you take a good look at the ‘Other News’ section at the bottom of the newsletter!

From Adal:

Hello friends! It’s been a wild month in Chicago. We got about 20 some inches of snow to the point where we couldn’t get out of our garage and had to put in a couple hours of shoveling every day for a week there. The joys of living in the mid-west!

Creatively, lately I keep telling myself I’m going to START this project or that and then just never muster up the energy. Anyone have any video’s/books/methods/etc. for breaking out of a creative/productivity funk?! I’m still semi-productive but I’m realizing soon I won’t be able to take advantage of so much free time so I’d love a swift kick in the motivational ass if anyone is wearing their recommendation boots!

I’ve been having some fun every few days with Arnie Niekamp on Clubhouse! He’ll start a room with a game premise and we just play for an hour or so. If you join Clubhouse make sure and follow him and join us some night!

Jemma and I are playing a bunch of Yahtzee and QUIXX. I hit a wall with video games but I plan on checking out Little Nightmares based on Casey Toney’s rec. And Dicey Dungeon based on Arnie Niekamp’s rec.

Oh hey! Jemma has her second quarantine birthday coming up on March 28th so mark your calendars and send her some love that day if you remember…..you won’t! And that’s fine!

Also please send some love to one of the people who helps keeps the Hey Riddle Riddle community going and our dear friend, Kelly Paleczny. She recently had to say goodbye to her beautiful cat Alley.

You all are the best!

Here’s what I consumed in March!

TV:

  • The Goes Wrong Show
  • Tiger Woods Documentary on HBO
  • Submissions Only - YouTube series
  • One Piece
  • Call My Agent
  • Bluey - Still watching an episode or 2 a day! The best.

Movies:

  • Sky High
  • Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar!
  • The Notebook - Erin was right! The line “Say I’m a BIRD!” is very weird and funny
  • Kinky Boots
  • News Of The World
  • In Bruges

Other Stuffs:

  • I guested on the following podcasts! My episodes are either out now or coming soon! Bloke Busters. Cinema Swap. American Timeline. The Doctor DC podcast. Afterworlds podcast. My First Anime. The ReWriters Room. Friendsmen.
  • No playlist from me this month but I’ve been blissing out to a lot of Explosions In The Sky which I recommend anytime you want to just zone out and have an emotional yet wordless background for your thoughts.

Please let me know if you have any recommendations for me!

When this is all over I feel like I just want to tour the US and do live shows every week. I miss other humans.

Love,

Adal

From Erin:

Hello Friends!

I’m so excited for our live show this Friday. I feel a little sad that this might be the last time I get to do hey riddle riddle in the same room as Adal and JPC for a long time.

I haven’t had too much time to watch anything lately.  I would love some documentary recommendations!

I have been trying to think of the catchiest pop songs from the last 20 years. This is obviously just the beginning but each song is going through a lot of vetting from me and my friends. But follow along if you want-and let me know what you think we might be missing!

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4p6biNpWdOIAOwIl8VgEa4?si=3Vqjw0Z1SReQ86TpcyuHpQ

I am so sorry I don’t have more to recommend this month! If there is anything specific you want me to go into recommendations wise let me know!

I hope you have a great month!

-Erin

From JPC:

Feb was a short month but time is meaningless and every day blends together. This time last year, I had just quit my corporate job and was looking forward to a year full of live improv shows and travel. Ha! Well, the plan didn't exactly work out that way, but I'm insanely grateful for all of your support because without it, I would have had a very different year.

I'm still going strong tracking my data and I made some good progress this month. I found a workout routine that I'm actually able to commit to and that's going really well. I haven't quite nailed down a reading routine yet, but I'm okay with taking an L on that category in Feb. I'll try again for March.

As far as media is concerned, I haven't really been watching much. Mariah and I started watching the Clone Wars tv show. I watched it all years ago, but I remember almost none of it. That's the great thing about having terrible memory, you get to experience things for the first time again!

I have been playing a ton of Cyberpunk 2077 on Twitch. That may be the only game I played in Feb? We'd have to check the tape. I'm still not all the way through it yet, so that'll spill into March for sure. I also added a new stream reward to do live-readings of some books in an effort to do more political education. People have been asking me where I speak more openly about my politics and so now I have a place to point them. If you can't catch the stream live (and engage in the discussion) you can watch the clips of my Radicalization series. Here's the first one reading the introduction to A People's Guide to Capitalism by Hadas Thier https://www.twitch.tv/videos/928693040?collection=us6W-qwuZxZzsA&filter=collections&sort=time If you've never been exposed to Marxist theory, the book is a very good introduction.

Ok, that's enough for me. Stay safe and healthy!

Other News!:

  • We have a live show this Friday!! Friday March 5th at 8pm CST we do what may be our last live show for some time! Erin is moving soon and we’ve had an absolute blast doing the last couple of these so it should be something special! You can buy tickets here: https://audiotree.tv/stream/hey-riddle-riddle-rd3. The site says 8pm to 9pm but we’ll be going for about 90 minutes! An hour long Hey Riddle Riddle show and then we’ll be doing about 30 more minutes of bonus content, most likely in the realm of Patreon content!! If you buy a ticket you can watch the show at any point up until Midnight CST the next day, Saturday the 6th! That’s just over 24 hours to watch! Please please please spend some time with us and help us celebrate Erin before she’s cast in some new sitcom in L.A. and stops taking our calls!
  • We have a new miniseries out! It’s a Hello From the Magic Tavern spin-off appropriately titled ‘Hey Tavern Tavern!’ and it’s Chunt, Momo the mouse and Hornelius the Fintaur trying to help the citizens of Foon with their problems concerning love, sex and relationships! It’s got a banging new theme from Arne Parrott and a special upcoming cameo from the Audio Daddy himself! It’s 7 episodes that release every Thursday! The first episode is out now! You can listen only on Stitcher Premium but if you use the code MAGIC you should get a free month of the service so time it right and you can binge it all!
  • WE HAD A TIE FOR THIS MONTHS REVIEW CREW! Pretty wild stuff. Both Murder She Wrote and No Escape Room received exactly 31% of the vote. We’ll be doing Murder She Wrote Seaon 1, Episode 1! Since it was on a previous poll we are using that as a tie breaker. That episode of Review Crew should be out on March 8th.
  • Our March Livestream video will be up later today!
  • Take care of yourselves and others!

As always let us know what YOU recommend in the comments below and if there’s anything you’d like to hear us do on a Patreon episode!

Love you all and thank you again for the support! We are perverts, bum ba dum dum dum dum dum.

Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. This is my recommendation for anyone feeling like they're in any sort of rut, creative or otherwise. It has a lot of really great advice for writing, and life in general.

@adal whenever i get stuck in a creative rut i rewatch Neil Gaimans commencement speech at UArts in 2012: “Make Good Art.” Also- i love submissions only omg santino fontana can absolutely get it

Serpentine

Darn, I didn't get in in time to campaign for Murder Call :'( Oh well, was surprised enough to see it even make the list! I want y'all to come to Australia already so I can tell you about dinosaurs in the outback. I have lots of very bad jokes.

@adal when I get in a motivational rut I try to get into a hobby that uses a totally different part of my brain, like exercise or cooking, then after a while of those I feel more motivated for creative stuff. Also Bluey is so great! I have a 4 year old but I like the show at least much as my son does.

Anonymous

@erin idk what documentaries you like but i watched "tread" on netflix in february and it was a wild ride

Anonymous

The War of Art is an excellent (and short) read for getting out of a rut.

Would be a great month to start doing multiple Review Crew episodes, seeing as two titles tied...

Evil Bart

If you haven't seen it, Tucker and Dale vs Evil is a great film. It's a unique take on the whole cabin in the woods horror trope... but with Alan Tudyk.

Anonymous

This would be SO FUN. Idk if the violence would be a little excessive for the show but I love Tucker and Dale with my whole heart

Evil Bart

That's very true. I really enjoy the film even with the blood and gore, but I understand that's not for everyone. If not for the show, they should still give it a try. It's a fun movie.

AK ie JetBlackArsonal

I found out that TaskMaster on BBC posted full episodes on Youtube! I'm having a blast. And a quick search shows me that none of you ever mentioned Your Name. It's an anime movie that's was popular in...maybe 2016 and the art direction is beautiful.

Adal - I've struggled with kicking my own butt to get projects started too. I hate to say it, but the old advice of setting time each day to just sit down for a bit and work on something really does help! As someone who knows a bit about psych/neuroscience, it can help if you throw in a bit of novelty with your creative routine, like listening to music you wouldn't normally listen to, drinking a fun drink, or sitting in a place you wouldn't normally do your creative work in (much easier pre-pandemic times).

@erin there's a documentary called Tickled about a wild rabbit hole a journalist fell into investigating competitive tickling that is wild from beginning to end AND there's a one hour long update where one of the subjects of the film confronted them at the premiere of the doc.

Anonymous

Jumping on this late but Tickled is amazing!! I’m also signed up to David Farriers (the journalist) newsletter called Webworm which is great
