Alice brought Nathan closer to her. Her brown eyes were fixated on him, while the warm air from her mouth enveloped his body. With an unfamiliar hesitant voice, she tried to get a grip on the situation.

Alice: I really don't understand why you're overreacting like this. You know me, I'm Lisa's longest friend and I've known her since kindergarten. Why would some random girl take better care of you than me? I would never do anything that would seriously hurt her.

Nathan was almost a little irritated by her words. Were these signs of genuine empathy? Before he could answer, Alice continued in her usual voice.

Alice: You just have to accept that your normal life is over. You are no longer a normal part of this society. Almost everything around you can kill you and your only way to spare yourself such a fate is to trust me. Give yourself to me and maybe even the two of us, Lisa and I, can take care of you.

Nathan's spark of hope fizzled out immediately when he looked into her eyes after her speech. The warm glow of empathy was firmly hidden under her shell of incomprehension and sadism.
