I've been working on my visual novel for almost a year now, but as you can see, financially - I didn't succeed. This point, very much limits my possibilities. For example, I can't hire a professional translator, because all the finances go to light, the Internet and endless commissions. I just want to understand what my problem is.

So the question is:

What is the main problem with the game?

I have read a lot of comments, reviews and feedback about my game and I would like to know the answer to this question from all the patrons and subscribers who are not indifferent. This survey will help me determine what I should pay special attention to in the future.

I hope for your activity in this survey.

P.S. I am not going to stop my activity, it's just a work on mistakes.

P.S.S. If you have thoughts and suggestions, write to me personally. Feedback is welcome.

Sex and choices I agree with MasterSav in principle. How ever I suspect the statistics are more influenced by the length of the demo rather than the concentration of sex and choices. Obviously the more choices complexity the better. How ever for the length of play I found it adequate.

Finances at this point your goal only displays a percentage so I can't comment to thoroughly. Also everything I say comes down to personal opinion. I am hardly an authority on anything. Based on what I have seen I could easily support you for $20 a month. That's US currency more in Australian dollars. Currently I am un able to do so, as of recent, I have had to reduce my patreon contributions, due to my financial situation. How ever you can expect my contribution to increase at latter date. I have a couple of content creators I'm considering pulling funding from. I'm just giving them a fair chance, until their next release to improve. When that happens. You are first inline. For your perspective a little personal details. My last months bill for patreon was $366 Aud for the month up from around 260 Aud the month before. I have difficulty maintaining this figure but have been doing so in light of covid 19 reluctant to cut people off in a crisis. I hope to maintain at around $300 Aud month. $300 a month is roughly equivalent to a 1/4 of what I pay in rent per month and approximately what I have available weekly after basic essentials which dose not include things like vehicle, amenity excesses, clothes, social outings etc. Its also approximately what you may expect a person my age 37 years old, full time work, no dependants(children spouses etc) and sensible debts to have. People consider that contribution level high for a person in my income bracket. In my case its partially justified for work reasons. My current development targets people like yourself. A solo developer making narrative based games. I should also mention before I get to off track that $20 - $25 US is about the maximum I am willing to support any individual artist. Reading about your trials / struggles, the response's from your patreaon's and your development pace, greatly informs my designs. In that view I consider it a research cost as much a novelty. I really love narrative games especially those that include mature themes. My expectations for inclusion of sexual content is roughly inline with that of a film with a similar subject matter. That said there will be people who play your game for sexual purposes. In my view it would be counter productive to sacrifice narrative to cater to the provision of kinks and lewd content. If it were as simple as looking for sexual imagery and animations. They might just as easily entertain themselves by downloading tinder or visiting a strip club, where one could encounter actual nudity with the possibility of actual sexual interactions. Those truly brave souls, with the inner strength and conviction of purpose, may even attempt to butter up their spouses. But I digress. The key ingredient applicable to both the sexual and narrative enthusiast is context. The circumstances under which the sexual interactions take place. The characters involved in the sexual encounters and the level of attachment to the character portrayed through the course of the narrative. Users aren't always consciously aware of this key element of gratification, especially if you cater to those who in all likely hood are viewing your content illegally. Your audience is a mature age group looking for an experience more similar to an erotic novel with visuals than a fuck flick on pornhub. As guide to pricing I would look at the content produced by others in the same medium and that of erotic fiction paper back. Its a simple as typing erotic fiction paper back into google and clicking the shopping tab. Prices will vary greatly but common metrics are the number of pages which translates to play time and the popularity of the author. Its also a one time payment. Subscription wise ie if your planning to make all your income through patreon. Your looking at pay to play pricing. Eve online Wow are similarly priced to cost of our paper back they include allot more content or play time and have massive player bases. You have far less man power than blizzard and allot smaller demographic. What I suggest and its purely my opinion. I would encourage other patreaon's to provide their views, for consideration and remember all in all, this is your work and any decision's made have to fit in with what you desire your work to be. Your actually one step a head of me. You made your first public release and it was a good one, as a personal milestone you should congratulate yourself most projects never see the light of day. What I suggest is you make a distinction between yourself as artist and the tittle your working on. Your patreon release, your public release and your demo. Your patreon release should been designed to showcase your current iteration or version of your design so you can gather feed back and improve it. It should not be freely given or be given with the rights for distribution. This is your work and you deserve to be paid for it. If your patreons share it on a site or distribute it amongst their friends they are stealing your potential income. Money received from patreon are patronage paid to you the artist to enable your work. In that view I haven't actually purchased your tittle. Think of us as the people who are going to support you through this tittle and the next. It is your discretion if you choose to include a charge for updates, other developers have employed tiered releases where the higher level supporters get releases sooner and I have seen this to be successful. I have also see arrangements where only certain tiers get access to releases or updates and extra content. Along with discord private direct contact with developers via various platforms and polls like the one above for specific tiers. remember patreon support is monthly and I would suggest if you choose to sell your releases by the chapter that you make available the same version to the equivalent patreon tier. Your release weather you choose to do so in chapter's, episodes or by the tittle, should be final, finished ready to publish content. This is where I advise you use the paper back comparison. itch.io enables one time minimum payment options for consumers. note that users can reuse their purchase reference stored in their email to redownload the purchase if there is an update or in the event you need to correct a bug. Which is good. How ever if you finalize a chapter or an episode and then complete a series of chapters you will need to post them separately to ensure you are being paid for all of your work. You don't want to sell the whole book for the price of a chapter. Your demo is fine for now you could improve it as you tweak that section of the story but its not really necessary to expand past that point in the story. Its really a teaser and I would treat it as such. Again purely opinion. I don't have clear picture of your ability's as a programmer or direct experience with ren'py. I generally work in C++ and c# learning pythons still on my todo list. As a side note if your looking for courses its worth checking out Udemy my experience as a native English speaker has been great. I don't know if its the same for your native language but its worth a look. The price is fair when you purchase at the discounted rates. I would not pay the regular price I and many others find that it, appears to be deliberately inflated. How ever discounts happen regularly and I also find if you access the discount through an add on YouTube etc you get the discounted rate even if a search for the same course produced non discounted rates. But as I was saying in regard to your skills. As you improve I would suggest you focus some of your efforts on building tools that facilitate your work flow. You should aim Ideally to not have to code to add or modify a chapter. Being able to concentrate solely on story and visuals will greatly improve times between chapters and if stick with the same framework the ease with which you produce future tittles. Further down the line you may wish to incorporate update features avoiding the need to redownload the entire content. But I would not consider it an immediate concern. From memory I've only seen one developer implement this feature. Also if you have that level of ability You should first consider modifying your patreon version to allow users to correct text content and post it to you.

Wow thank you for a comprehensive answer :) Really huge text, the translator in the browser, refused to translate it completely heh. Despite these difficulties, I have a rough idea of what you're talking about and I will take that into account. And by the way, I did not put the payment for a single game release. I only changed the subscription method so that my regular patrons could see the exclusive content that is provided depending on their level of subscription. You understand yourself that a person can subscribe for a maximum amount, open all links and images and then just unsubscribe. I want to avoid this not because of "need for money", but for the sake of those who really believe in my project. And also, I just made the total amount private. Maybe it is really worth making it public. It seemed to me that you raised this issue in your text, I apologize if I misunderstood.
