The Ben and Arthur Spotlight Best of the Worst is getting ready to drop soon. We were joined by a special guest star on this episode! His film credits only include one film - Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Him and Rich got along very well.

This episode took longer than usual because the first edit of it was lost when an external hard drive crashed and died. I lost so much stuff... years worth of edits and raw footage. We made every possible effort to get it working again, but it was just dead. So I had to re-edit the whole show from scratch, which wasn't a lot of fun.

Either way, get ready to Experience Ben and Arthur! We put the film through the wringer for 1 hour and 13 minutes!

-Mike

It’s all I ever wanted.

Oh, no...I'm so sorry, guys. 😔

James Graham

External hard drives are so great until they die 😢

Anonymous

damn, the 2020 curse strikes again. i'm so sorry!

Anonymous

Oh how sad. I’m really looking forward to this. Thanks so much.

Anonymous

Damn sorry to hear about the lost hard drive, very unfortunate.

Daniel E. Passaro

Sigh, did you try turning it off and on again, sir?

Anonymous

Damn, they got a fill Gremlins body. Now they don’t gotta just flex an arm

Anonymous

Sorry to hear about the drive ❤

Anonymous

Aw jeez sorry man. I've been there.

Anonymous

That’s such a huge bummer :( Find a specialist! There’s a very very very good chance some or most of it might be recoverable. Also, consider having multiple backups and using cloud storage! You guys rock!!!

Anonymous

Sorry to hear all that lost work must have sucks . Thanks for all the dedication to making and editing these videos for slobs like us

Anonymous

I'm so sorry that seriously sucks! We're all still so excited to see the new episode and it'll be extra awesome cause you worked so hard to get it out.

Anonymous

Happy hacksgiving guys!

Anonymous

Any chance you can send the drive to get the data recovered? It’s a bit pricey but usually they can get a ton of stuff out of broken drives

Anonymous

Sorry to hear about the drive. Lost one myself recently and learned I'd gotten lazy on my backups. Thank God for DiskDrill.... or I'd have lost a lot more than 3 days of my life. You know the backup adage: 1 is none. 2 is one. 3 is done. But, hey, it went faster the second time, right? :-/

Anonymous

omg that SUCKSSSSS I'm so sorry that happened.

Rhea

Oh noooo, that's fucking heartbreaking. I had a hard drive break (because I dropped it like a dingus) and nothing was recoverable and I legit cried. Sorry for your loss Mike.

Anonymous

Sorry to hear about the hard drive, Mike. Fantastic looking Gremlin, though!

Anonymous

That's a fucking bummer. Yall should look into setting up a few Synology NAS Diskstations (as an example) with redundancies offsite in the future...

Anonymous

depending on how valuable the data was there are many data recovery specialist companies that will get the data back. the cost might be prohibitive if it's not that crucial. starts at, like, ~$1000 bucks typically for a trusted service. so... yea :(

Anonymous

Highly recommend that you reach out to https://www.300dollardatarecovery.com/start-data-recovery/

Sorry for your loss

+1 what Dimitri said - you'd be amazed at what some data recovery professionals can accomplish - they have tools and expertise for just this kind of situation.

Anonymous

Time to turn lemons into lemonade with an impromptu funeral video for your lost hard drive, featuring the dulcet tones of Rich Evans singing Ave Maria.

Andy

Oh god - i just know Mike is gonna be drop kicking that Gremlin around the room, horrifying collectors and memorabilia fans.

Dimitri German

So sorry to hear that Mike. I’m sure you’ve already exhausted all options, but I was once able to rescue data from a failed external via a hard-drive enclosure. I hope you’re eventually able to find a way to get it back. Either way, thanks for all your extra hard work!

Anonymous

RIP HDD. You guys are an incredible group of lads and I know dozens of us out there are beyond glad for the entertainment (and analysis?!?) you provide. Hope you and your work will keep staying safe and sound.

Anonymous

I would gladly donate some of my own years of raw footage if it will help. It's mostly just me trying to learn how to communicate with squirrels. I say "trying" because it's so fucking hard. Anyway, let me know.

Mike St Louis

Oh man! That sucks Mike! HD crashes are the worst.

Anonymous

So sad!

Anonymous

I'm sure you tried this, but I want to second the hard-drive enclosure. It worked for me too.

Anonymous

Oh man, that's gut-wrenching to lose so much content. You should totally stage a reenactment for our sick enjoyment. The gremlin can play the role of your hard drive.

Lisa

Man, that blows. Really sorry. Thanks for the update and for making the episode happen. Really looking forward to it.

Peter Varga

sorry about the HD! :( as the others say, maybe there is a way yet to recover it. never give up, never surrender!

Anonymous

Might be time to look into some form of network attached storage that has uses a file system with parity like RAID 5.

Jazz Jackrabbit

Damn, sorry about the hard drive.

Anonymous

That's awful. I'm so sorry

Alessio Roic

Hey Mike - that really suck. Storage redundancy is more affordable now. May i suggest a couple of these? https://www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-easystore-14tb-external-usb-3-0-hard-drive-black/6425303.p?skuId=6425303

2020 strikes again. Fucking year from hell

Anonymous

Man, sorry about that! But thanks for all your hard work to put the episode together still!!

Anonymous

Mate, commiserations on the data loss, but - nice one for taking it on the chin and getting straight back to work. Looking forward to the episode.

Henry Martyn

Well, onward and upward

Anonymous

Thanks Mike! 👍🏻

Happens to the best (of the worst) of us. I can definitely relate to a loss like that.

Joshua Mannix

Ugh, losing creative work due to hard drive issues SUCKS ASS. I've only had it happen once and that was enough for me. Started using Dropbox to save all files after that. Thats an option for a writer though, not video format with probably terabytes of data. Ever look into creating a server for the studio like LinusTechTips has?

Supro3D

Hard drive failures are the worst. Depending on the manufacturer, you could send it back to them to see if they can recover the data (for a fee, of course). Then probably have a backup for the backup.

Anonymous

Rule of 3 for backups two physical and one in the cloud. Sorry for your guys loss

Anonymous

Hey I'm sure I'm not the only nerd on here with tips for saving a crashed hard drive. If it's an old spinning-platter type drive (SATA or IDE), try wrapping the drive (just the drive itself) it in an airtight static bag (one of those foil-looking bags), and then put it in the freezer for 24 hours. It doesn't always (or even often) work, but I've managed to recover data off of many failed drives that way over the years.

Anonymous

This is 2020. How are you not using CLOUD STORAGE for this data? For God's sake there's so many good and cheap solutions that are easy as pie I've lost count. I could throw my whole computer and it's TB of data into a dumpster fire (insert joke here) and not ever lose a bit of data. You should think similarly. Your desktop and all it's local storage should be for convenience, never the repository of record for your data. You trying to be Pixar or something? (they almost lost Toy Story 2 in a similar manner).

Anonymous

https://drivesaversdatarecovery.com/ is what we use for my job. They are great.

Anonymous

For every hard drive that has stuff I want to keep, there is another hard drive to back it up. Been burned too many times to do otherwise.

Anonymous

Damn, I’m sorry Mike! Seriously that sucks! How do I send you some booze?

Anonymous

Sorry about the hard drive and thanks for getting right back to finishing the episode.

James Murphy

You guys need get a proper data storage solution.

Anonymous

Man, you just remind that I should probably make a copy of my harddrive soon.

Anonymous

All the folks telling them about the existence of hard drives here like these guys haven't been in the game for half their lives. You can have all the hard drives in the world, but keeping track of every piece of data you have to make sure it's all backed up? That's a huge ask when you have stuff that dates back decades. Shit happens.

Juan Calvo

Rich is briefing the gremlin about all of the abuse he's about to get. Can't wait for the episode and hopefully there's still one chance left to recover that disk.

Anonymous

Really sorry to hear about the loss of that data. Try the data recovery services that others have suggested. I'd also recommend checking out Linus Tech Tips on YouTube. They make tons of videos about computers and even did a series where they created data storage servers specifically for other creators on YouTube. Might be a fun collaboration project.

Anonymous

Ugh, sorry to hear that! I lost a drive to a ransomware attack a couple of years ago. Fortunately, I was able to recover most of it because I was using Backblaze, but since my internet was so shitty at the time, not everything had been backed up yet to the cloud (over 2 terabytes). Hopefully, you'll get a redundant storage solution in the future! Sadly, sometimes we have to lose a drive before we bite the bullet and take better precautions in the future. Been there!

David Arcaine

My condolences to your lost drive. That fucking sucks. Keep up the great work and stay safe RLM!

Anonymous

You probably tried this but just in case: Does the drive spin up at all? Do you hear clicking? If it does spin up cleanly but won't read, you can open the case, get the model number of the 2.5in drive, buy the same exact model used working unit off ebay and swap out the controller PCB's. It SOMETIMES works to bring a drive back to life in specific circumstances: https://www.donordrives.com/pcb-replacement-guide Its worth a shot before layout of thousands on data recovery, as its non destructive. If its platter failure you're boned, but if you get lucky and its electrical...

Sorry for your loss

Anonymous

I know that pain of realizing a hard drive and everything on it is gone... Years later you're still finding out that the clip you can't find must have been on it. And just yesterday went through the pain of losing an entire day's worth of timeline editing due to a computer crash. Losing a whole edit would have me offline for a week before I could face editing again.

Anonymous

Ah Mike! I'm so sorry. You gotta back that stuff up, my man! Take it to a data doctor - they can work miracles. Looking forward to the episode.

Anonymous

I've had that happen. Lost tons of shit, including 45 minutes of a film that I had just shot the night before. Hadn't run the backup yet.

Anonymous

Josh can fix the drive! Although all the videos on it might run backwards when he's done.

Anonymous

Sorry to hear you guys lost all the hard drive. It always sucks when a glitch sets you back.

Anonymous

Ive lost hard drives before with art on them, its a huge bummer. Sorry :( But you will continue to make great things and can do everything youve already done better now!

Ferawyn

Get an actual NAS. I have had good experiences with Synology. Reliable and easy to set up. Then back that up to something like Backblaze. It's worth every penny when something crashes and burns.

Bort Ward

No backups? If it's a usual HDD you would be able to recover the data on the drive if there isn't any unusual encryption applied to it. I'm sure there is somewhere in Wisconsin that can do it as long as the platters within the drive aren't physically damaged.

JTruts

You can try a clean room restore if you have some $$$. Need to buy another copy of the same exact model drive and send it in, then a bunch of techs dressed like Scientist Man go into a dust-controlled lab to try to restore as many working parts onto your failed frive using your mirror. Here's a place in Milwaukee: https://itcdatarecovery.com/ Unfortunately expect to pay many hundreds of dollars but might be worth it based on the amount of lost data. Sorry to hear about that, it's a horrible feeling.

Anonymous

Not since the burning of the library of Alexandria has humanity lost so much culturally

David S. Grop

I understand y'all are just trying to be helpful but he did say they "made every possible effort to get it working again". What makes you think that doesn't include the things you're suggesting?

Anonymous

Get dropbox

Andre K

I'm sorry for your loss Mike. Losing a HDD is a terrible feeling, especially one with so much stuff.

Anonymous

How many swears are hanging in a cloud over Milwaukee now, Mike? Ugh...that sucks, bro...sorry...been there, too...lost ALL of my music on my old laptop (I'm a music teacher and I have about 22 concerts a year).

Anonymous

P.S....that's a lovely picture of Rich and his twin brother...

Anonymous

So that's what Hulk Hogan looks like these days...

Anonymous

I run a QNAP. It's been relatively trouble-free. But definitely opt for 10gb ethernet. I've futzed with thunderbolt for ages and Ethernet is just MUCH less hassle. But, as Ferawyn stated... worth every penny.

Anonymous

Who's that guy to the left of Rich Evans?

Anonymous

Look into getting an external RAID box. You throw in a bunch of giant cheap hard drives and you're done. If a drive dies you pull it out throw it away and throw in another drive of the same size or larger. You virtually never have to worry about data loss again from a single drive dying.
