This show has a rocky relationship with depicting black people. It's always a strange combination of admiration for the legacy left by some notable names but then always finds some way to be really disrespectful to the same character in a way that seems more personal then the other challengers that are introduced. Olivia is a prime example, here you have the #2 strongest in the world, well learned, politically powerful, mature and reservered(opposed to the rapping dj stereotype), but he can only exist in PRISON. They consciencly decided to give him attributes that refute stereotypes held by the world but no matter how smart and strong he is he is still part of an oppressive industrial prison complex. And from there it doesn't get better for other black characters. Still a fun show though!!

I think it's entirely reasonable to have a negative reaction to seeing Muhammad Ali portrayed this way, but, at least with taking the next episode into consideration, I think the show does the best job possible with portraying a disabled man like him. Without spoiling the details the show heaps respect onto him and never once mocks or denigrates the man for having this condition. It's the toughest part about good disabled representation in media; you don't want to make their portrayal all about their disability, but neither do you want to ignore it entirely when it is a major part of any disabled person's life. Best way is to show it frankly and bluntly, and as just one aspect of that person. And for as meatheaded as a show Baki is I think it does just that.

I think y'all don't like it because it makes you uncomfortable, which is understandable. It always made me a little uncomfortable when they'd show him at all these events. It still makes me sad/uncomfy when I see my great gma like that now. But that's how it is in real life. Ali had one of the more severe cases i've ever seen, and while its not fun to look at, its real and I appreciate they didn't try to water it down or pretend it didn't happen. They do a great job of respecting Ali's legacy later in the show and imo their portrayal of his disease adds even more to it. It shows how his deterioration later in life doesn't take away from him being one of the most important men in Americas short history. This isn't meant to be a criticism btw just my interpretation. I definitely get why ppl wouldn't like it.

This was like that episode of Family Guy where Peter looks dead the camera and says they had a cutaway about Michael J. Fox planned, but it was too rude and cringe so they decided not to show it. But then they still show it later and it is in fact cringe even though that is in fact what McFly deals with on a daily basis. Or when people wanted Once Upon a Time in Hollywood canceled because Tarantino dared to depict the legend Bruce Lee losing a fight in a “memory.” Love how this show is so ridiculous, niggas are getting pounds of flesh slapped off their bodies, but all that was stopped dead in its tracks to show an “accurate” depiction of Ali who is the way he is because of a character in the show.

Mild spoilers but this show is really fucking weird about Ali. It shows a ridiculous amount of respect for his character, his career, his fighting style. The guy who wrote Baki clearly loves Muhammad Ali. and despite all that, he continues to be animated regularly with drool on his mouth, which is almost enough to cancel all the praise. They do treat him with the respect he deserves, but didn't also want to downplay his condition either (Imo its also not respectful to ignore a severe medical condition the person has to make them more "Presentable") . It's not necessary to go as far as showing pissing and shitting themselves specifically because they show the dribbling, by that point everyone without a doubt understands the severity of the condition regardless of whether they know about parkinsons. What you seem to want is them to specifically downplay its affects to the point of not properly conveying its severity to those who aren't as well versed on the seriousness of it. And to top it off, ur casually throwing around accusations of racism due to stereotypes, so you must also believe the authors of Bleach, Naruto ans many others are racist as well because they've also used stereotypes before.

In essence, you also want them to downplay the severity of his condition despite incontinence actually being a sypmtom of his condition, thus its severity it also not being properly conveyed by them leaving out the incontinence. I believe the shaking alone was enough to portray his condition and the drooling wasn't necessary despite the fact it also is a symptom. We both have a line on how far we believe the portrayal should go, they're just in different spots and you're just upset my line doesn't go as far as yours.

2023-08-30 01:24:38 I see a lot of people commenting that it's okay because that's what Parkinson's does to people. Here's the thing: they chose what to animate and how to portray things. People with PD often keep napkins on them to wipe away drool, but that's ignoring the fact that they make medications (old ones at that) that limit the drooling. If they wanted to make an accurate portrayal of PD, they could have also added more of the vocal tremor that Ali had. They could have animated him wiping the drool, which wouldn't even need to be visible. The tremor is a 4-6 Hz resting tremor seen best at the extremities, they shows his as occurring with a very substantial axial component. The point is, they could have animated the PD more accurately, or Ali more respectfully, or both. But instead, they animated PD poorly and Ali disrespectfully, for no good reason.
