I heard a rumor that this was originally meant to be a 2 episode premier which is why episode 1 ended so weirdly without too great of a hook.

Second episode definitely got my attention more. I'm still withholding judgment until later in the series, but I'm feeling OK about this being the first new thing I'm watching in awhile. I'm liking it more than the last few anime my friends hyped up. Watching it for the second time, I didn't really notice the first time that the last one who ran away was the same guy who initially wanted them all to go in and used the fact his friend was expecting another kid to try to convince them. Kind of annoying to instigate all of that and then leave everyone to die.
