This is definitely one of my favorite episodes. Heck, the Yotsuba arc is probably my favorite story arc, for one main reason: it shows us the true tragedy of the show - that it was Light Yagami that truly was the first victim of the Death Note. Before the Note, he was a genuinely kind person, and now with his memories gone, he is that person again. The complete contrast between the true Light and Kira is simply astounding. We'll see more examples of it later, but one of the biggest examples is the one you pointed out: that he refuses to exploit Misa's feelings for his own gain, or even the gain of the investigation as a whole. The idea of that truly disgusts him. In fact, you could arguably say that the original Light Yagami is a better person than L - despite being on the other side of the law, L has deliberately been shown many times to be very similar to Kira. Though he goes for different ends, he uses a LOT of the same means that Kira would use. This is why he's so effective in tracking Kira. As for WHY he's so different, we couldn't really tell, since we never got much of Light's original personality in Episode 1, but we do see WHY he's different: he realizes that he's become a murderer, and the knowledge breaks him. There's one scene in Episode 1, where he's stumbling through an alley in the rain, shocked to his core that he's a murderer. He's Light Yagami, Japan's best and brightest, son of the Detective Superintendant and with plans to follow his father into police work, with a couple cases already under his belt. And THAT person comes to understand that he's killed two people in cold blood. He's freaking out, and doesn't know what to do... and that's when you first see Kira emerge. No, of course he didn't do anything wrong. Those were criminals, and he was chosen to receive the Notebook, the power to affect the world like this. There has to be a reason for that, right? And then Ryuk shows up, and informs him that nope, Light isn't "chosen", and that the only reason he received the Notebook and wound up becoming a murderer is because a Shinigami was bored. So, then he decides that he himself is the authority that declares that he isn't a murderer. He'll become God, and Gods, by their very nature, are always right. He hasn't done anything wrong; he's passing righteous judgement down upon his world. A slippery slope to true madness that only began because a kind-hearted student mentally broke because he couldn't accept what he'd become.

That sounds like a desperate defense. Like saying people who committed mass shootings were the victims of guns. It is all the gun & manufacturers fault. LOL

I think the reason why Light chose Rem instead of Riuk to give a Death Note to someone else, is simply because Riuk wouldn't have done it. Riuk clearly stated at the beginning that he would neither help nor hinder Light and he has done just that the whole time (He didn't give Light the names of anyone he didn't know, he only checked for the hidden cameras in Light's room, because Light tricked him into believing he could eat apples in Light's room if he found all the cameras etc. ). Rem on the other hand has clearly stated that she would do basically anything to protect Misa. Therefore if Light wants something to be done he has to appeal to Rem and convince her that helping him is in her best interest to save Misa.

Thank you for stopping yourself from spoilering Handmaiden's! :)

Rem is really the only viable choice here because she has an interest in this plan because it should save Misa. Ryuk just doesn't care and he probably wouldn't even help Light

I disagree about Light's personality change not being warranted. He actually was a kinder person before he got the book. However he did always believe that murderers, rapists and such deserve death. That's not even an uncommon opinion really

Idk. I remember the first episode. He came off like he felt like he was better than others. He didn’t act all nice and considerate and sweet like he is now. He was more nonchalant or snobby to me. But then again people will interpret things different ways.
